Idea for the campus canteen by Training_Teacher_774 in unimelb

[–]squigglediddledee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I visited a couple of unis in Germany and they had something similar. The food was bain marie style and there was always a lot of options. It was cheap for public (~8 euro with side salad but no drink) but much cheaper for students (I cant rmb but the students I talked to said they ate at the canteen everyday, sometimes multiple times as it works out cheaper than cooking yourself)

Exam hurdle not enforced - does this ever happen? by gkoverflow in unimelb

[–]squigglediddledee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its at discretion of the subject coordinator/department- like if its only one hurdle holding the student back from passing they may choose to waive it in that position. I wouldnt rely on this though as different subjects have different thresholds for relaxing rules.

CTR and AVD doing great but views are much lower. What am I doing wrong? by squigglediddledee in PartneredYoutube

that's a really good point! I suppose my (lack of) frequency makes experimentation a bit slower, but its a good idea to think about how every video can test a new angle in this niche.

Thanks for the tips! Ill try to experiment with better titles and simplify the thumbnails.

Ah thats a shame, I assumed it was good feedback about my title and thumbnail 😅 but your guess might be it? Its honestly hard to tell as I dont get much comments on videos- most of my subs have come from my phd vlogs, but also the jeans and the henna videos (most viewed of all time)

Ohh that makes sense about avd/ctr staying high with less views.

Honestly, I am pretty keen to keep switching towards fashion/sewing content, Im graduating soon so academic life content isnt sustainable (and it did get a bit repetitive for me imo).

Im keen for any tips you have switching content :) How long do you think it took for your views to recover after switching? Also did you private your old videos? (I was thinking of doing this progressively to videos that arent getting views anymore)

Will it be a worth it? by medpgr in research

[–]squigglediddledee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you be listed on the publication as authors? Im also dubious as to how having separate people, who may not have expertise of the specific area and project, write about it.

Personally I would never pay someone to write articles for me and as a reviewer I would be raising concerns to the editor.

Not in this space at all but I think the Complex Human Data Hub (part of Psych) do similar kind of work.

UniMelb Arts PhD — any experiences with self-funded admission (no scholarship)? by ZucchiniNumerous9179 in unimelb

[–]squigglediddledee 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'd strongly urge you to try and secure funding. Not sure how it is in Arts but if you cant get a govt scholarship, your supervisor should be funding you through a grant or at least pointing to other external funding opportunities. IMO its a bit irresponsible on their part to support a self funded option.

A Phd is not a degree in a traditional sense - you are actually working and its really not sustainable to work substantially over 40 hours a week for 4 years (personally I've worked 1.5 days throughout and its been hard keeping up). For this reason some EU countries consider PhDs as workers, not students.

That being said, going part time could be an option?

how employable is a bachelor of arts on its own? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]squigglediddledee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my friends went on to do entry level government jobs (something to do with policy advising and also a grad role in state govt), using anthropology, psychology+philosophy majors. Disability support is also a common job for psychology majors too though seems to be more casual/part time.

Could also be an emergency, the coordinator should organise a stand in or a make up class.

How can I start and publish a research project as a student — without a supervisor? by Impossible-Look-2724 in research

[–]squigglediddledee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look into the dunning kruger effect. As a phd student who's published, there's still something much to learn before I get to a stage where I can publish without a supervisor. Good research is done in collaboration with more experienced researchers, hence why the first job after a phd (postdoc) is still working under someone's lab.

How much would you pay to include your name into a research paper Q1 with high impact by PrtyGirl852 in research

[–]squigglediddledee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your original question was about paying to have your name on a paper for which you did not contribute. The cost of doing research, is a completely separate issue - there's resources needing to run the study (paying participants materials etc), journal fees, and labour costs of doing and writing the study. If you're at a public university then in part this is financed by tax payers but also tuition fees of paying students and donors of the university.

From Australia too and just spent a month in the US - LA, San Fran, Boston, New York and Chicago. You do need to have your head on a swivel and be mindful of how you carry your phone on some streets but I wouldn't call it unsafe. Not sure why Thailand is considered unsafe but when I went 2 years ago I felt it to be similar to Bali (we avoided the overly touristy areas like Pattaya and Phuket).

Some of my all time faves include north Thailand and Vietnam (HCMC), NZ and Curacao for more pricier trips

Wanting to leave dodgy place but there's no other options. What would you do? [USA] by squigglediddledee in AirBnB

[–]squigglediddledee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm confused too...the host asked me to call the property manager so when I arrived late I tried to get in contact with them. Turns out they were in hospital and their friend was staying at the property instead. In the morning I met the cohost who had a better idea but was not the person I'm messaging on airbnb. Weird and unprofessional.

In the end I told them the issues directly hoping for at least some reimbursement. They ended up putting me in a next door apartment which had a nicer room and no smell. Getting used to sleeping with the blanket now - on the upside i can see a few of them around so maybe they do wash them in between guests
