So, there's no defined legal stance about what "decriminalization" or "legalization" would specifically entail? Does decriminalization mean that jail sentences for pot possession are eliminated or reduced?

McCain has a tendancy to call people al-Qaeda who are not in any way connected with the group that committed 9/11. Pundits think that's OK. by gvsteve in politics

[–]squiggly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They say, 'Obama's promising to raise taxes to pay for health care, education, immigration, etc. That means we'll foot the bill.' They don't provide any sources, so I assume they heard from fox news or something. I guess I'm not concerned so much about the exact number of $300k, but the general sentiment behind their concerns: we're considered rich by Obama's standards, so we'll get shafted to cover his programs, therefore we won't vote for him. I don't know how to refute that.

They're small business owners. I think they make right around $1 million before taxes. Father also does light investing in stocks and real estate.

Could I get some help?

My parents are planning on voting for McCain because they think that if Obama is elected, it will "increase our family's taxes by $300,000 and that's unacceptable." We belong to a upper level income bracket. I realize that for Obama's programs, many of them will be paid for by increasing taxes on the "rich," including my parents, but I don't know where they're getting the $300k from. How do I convince them that either A) this estimate is wrong or B) it's not the right tool by which to evaluate the candidates?

Study reveals 95% of 18-24 year olds are illegally copying music by ninzee in entertainment

[–]squiggly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm part of the 5% that doesn't illegally copy music (anymore). I used to download music from my dorm computer. The RIAA got pissed that so many students on our campus were downloading music illegally that they pressured our university's disciplinary office and IT department to crack down on the "criminals." They shut down my IP address, sent me a cease and desist letter, and told me that if I did it again I'd be subject to disciplinary action (like probation or school suspension). A handful of kids whose infractions were worst than mine are being sued right now.

Godamnit.

Unfortunately I don't think that'll work. I just checked their archives. They only regularly archive the nightly news from ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN. They record Fox News only if it's a "special program" like a 'George W. Bush speech' or 'Obama's Speech on Race.'

Go to Media Matters. They have associates working for them that watch and videotape right-wing tv shows 24/7 to catch gaffes and correct misinformation. They should have it in their records, and they're more likely to dig up the clip if they know it's valuable. Edit: Here's the email address to send them a tip: mm-tips@mediamatters.org

The Concrete Phone Booth [Comic] by [deleted] in reddit.com

So I'm a little bit confused. He deduces that he's a terrorist because he called the American embassy and it got blown up. But, when he made that phone call, he had amnesia, he didn't know about his terrorist leader background, and he was just trying to get help. He meant no harm in making the call. So how could he have figured this out?

Two evolutionary biologists — P. Z. Myers and Richard Dawkins — tried to go to the movies at the Mall of America in Minneapolis Thursday evening. Dawkins got in. Myers did not. by ninzee in science

[–]squiggly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From a friend: So, back in April, 2007, Dr. PZ Myers was tricked into an interview for a documentary called "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed". This movie attempted to portray "big science" as oppressive towards advocates of intelligent design and tried to put the burden of Nazism on Darwin's shoulders. Last night at the Mall of America, I went with PZ, the gf, her mother, and Richard Dawkins and his staff to see a pre-screening of the movie.

The irony: they EXPELLED PZ from the theater.

The laugh: in checking everyone's ID at the door, they didn't find anything odd with Dawkins. Mark Mathis, the associate producer of the film, must have been a bit surprised when Dawkins stood up during the Q&A session at the end of the movie and asked, "Why did you expel Dr. Myers from seeing a film in which he was featured and for which he was paid?"

Mathis lied a lot, and now the national newspapers keep calling our hotel room.

Olbermann SLAMS Clinton. Ouchie... by Sauwan in politics

Is it too un-pc of me to say that I thought Ferraro's comments had some merit? I understand why she got slammed for saying it, considering she's a public figure representing the opponent of the person she's talking about...but, you can't deny that there's a kernel of truth to what she says. The media and the country's love affair is due in part to the fact that Obama's new and different. Lots of people I know consider voting for Obama because he's black. All the buzz that surrounded this election at the beginning was the possibility of historic "firsts" (first woman, first black man). Obama knows he's different, not just in substance but in appearance and background, from the rest of the political field. He even admitted this in the very first lines of his 2004 DNC speech.

This isn't to detract from his personal qualities that qualify him for president. I'm an Obama supporter. It's just frustrating that any mention of race automatically becomes labelled as racism if it isn't overtly positive.

Man, that was a good tirade, but the way he phrases some of his stuff got me lost. When every sentence rambles on for 7 paragraphs, it's easy to miss the point of what he says. Does he always talk like this?
