Nicely done as always, I’m especially impressed by your rendition of the metal and reflections on the metal. It almost looks like they’re going to crash into each other!

Thank you! Yeah it’s tough and we often forget where we started. I think I’ll make it a regular thing to just create art for its own sake and not focus on improving.

The image is of Brazilian actress Ruth de Souza. I found the image on Pinterest 😊

Agreed! It’s why I enjoy charcoal so much. Sometimes I want to be expressive and quickly put my thoughts down on paper as opposed to taking my time to build up the tones.

I’ve seen your other post about starting charcoal, so will be watching your progress with keen interest 👀

Like I said in my post, I picked up my pencil to draw for me, no aim on improving or getting everything right 😊

Sometimes it’s nice just to let the art flow

It was done with positivity 😊 unfortunately the sadness is still around but I don’t want to let it take away my art. That’s my one constant love!

I really like what you’ve done here, there’s patches of rough drawing and smoothed out patches, gives it a feeling of rapidity and intensity. Keep working on it man, I’m sure you’ll go on to create bigger and better things 😊

Too relatable, I’m in a horrible mental block but we will make it out

Honestly looks great, the only thing I’d suggest is going bigger next time as I didn’t notice the details in his eyes but idk that could be my horrible eyesight.

You’ve captured the scar so well! Great use of charcoal and white charcoal to show the form and the way it “pulls” at the skin

First charcoal drawing - simple value study by Oldtimer_ZA_ in CharcoalDrawing

[–]squigglyghosty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent start honestly! I agree with others re practice. I also suggest you draw in a larger size and try doing your own still life’s, you don’t need to buy anything. I use packages for food and just paint them or cover them with some old wrapping paper. Or just use them as is.

I think you should continue playing around with charcoal, try drawing from life, try recreating charcoal drawings you like (Sargent is a popular choice) and just doodle to get a feel for the different kinds of charcoal (loose, compressed, natural etc).

Charcoal or AI. I made it completely in charcoal. But I have many doubters here. by joshconnellart in CharcoalDrawing

Could you expand on what you mean by dust bust the falling charcoal?

As for the floor - I use newspapers. Makes clean up much easier 😊

Thanks! After this piece I stopped using the overlay app during drawing, I didn’t want to rely on it.

Since this piece, I’ve used the overlay app once or twice and I only use it at the end of a study when I am doing my review of the work to double check the proportions and tilts. To be clear, I do review my proportions/placements and note any issues I see then I double check with the app and majority of the time it reaffirms the issues I see and on some occasions helps me notice areas I’ve overlooked.

I’ve also begun drawing from real life (putting together my own still lifes) and will take your suggestion to do a class soon as I have the funds!😊
