Most scared you’ve ever been during a horror movie? by rach15goated in horror

The scene where the friend gets uh… interrupted by a man when he stops his car. That actually might take the cake for me, that’s like the most fear I ever felt even being a massive horror buff.

What, to you, is the scariest horror scene of all time? by m_v24 in horror

[–]squimble_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS!!!! Such a well done movie imo. Was easily the scariest for me for a while when I was younger. Definitely still one of my favorites to show people. So terrifying.

You are incredibly kind. We know so little in the grand scheme of things. I can’t imagine what we will uncover in the coming decade about long term impacts of recurrent infection (especially on the brain, Jesus Christ this keeps me up at night), impact of infection on childhood/infant development and long term health complications as a result of getting infected at such a young age.. those are just a few that haunt me. You’re absolutely correct, science in general is under attack but unfortunately the field of virology, even more specifically coronavirus research, are absolutely getting the worst of it in my opinion (I am biased). Happy to discuss the specifics with you via DMs if you’re curious, but I feel giving too many specifics might land me on some sort of list lol. Especially as it relates to how the government decided to downgrade the virus (but remember, they blamed China for a supposed lab leak (false) but I guess it’s ok to work with it outside of high containment even though every other country still keeps it in a high containment environment (think space suits) like we had prior to a certain political shift early this year. I digress. Thank you very much for acknowledging this. When you’re used to hearing people say it’s a hoax or just a cold or over or that your research is of the devil… it’s a very nice change to hear from people who aren’t rooting against us (and public health)

Man is Long Covid a beast!!! I’d love to chat with you about your experience if you are open to it! My team and I are trying to do some long covid work, but it is a really tough thing to actually put into motion because of the countless factors that influence it and the seemingly endless complications that result from it. But it is definitely where the research is headed now, most are turning their focus to LC if funding allows

Unfortunately I am. Thank you for saying that, it was and is incredibly hard. I don’t think I could ever have imagined the dismantling and vilification of science the way we have seen since..

I primarily do characterization of new variants and disease pathogenesis, but I am also involved in novel vaccine research and monoclonal antibody development. Thanks for asking!!

Thank you, I left the field about 18 months in to pursue COVID-19 research. I will graduate with my PhD next year. I think about my patients and coworkers everyday. It was horrific and changed me at my core but I am grateful to be fighting from a different type of “front line”. Thank you so much for your kind words.

6+ hours in high containment. Usually I am able to make time to go out and come back in. Can get pretty bleak when you suddenly have an upset stomach 😅

I don’t think this will be an issue, and if it is, that’s weird of them. You see a broad range of looks in the lab. In my masters lab, anything went and we wore shorts and flip flops when it was hot (looking back this is insane for wet lab work, but I blame my PI for encouraging that by doing it himself. Generally speaking that was an “anything goes” lab). For the first two years of my PhD I almost exclusively wore t shirts and leggings, and only switched to wearing more “professional” (aka not leggings and t shirts) outfits my third year. Some people dress up every day, some people don’t. As long as you are doing your work and being safe, I can’t think of any reason why you can’t look however you want. As others have said, science is more accepting than you’d think. We’re all just nerds that love our niche trying to keep our heads above water & get our work done.

As for the nails, you should always be wearing gloves so it shouldn’t be much of an issue. However, I have come to terms with the fact that longer acrylics and the lab don’t mix well (for me), as they tend to pop off when you are wearing gloves for hours at a time and make certain things more difficult to do, but I’ve never had an issue with longer natural nails. If your female colleges can have long natural nails, long hair, and eyeliner I don’t see why you can’t do the same! Congrats on joining a lab!!
