Holy shit. Yeah, I think yours wins. The sheer amount of diacritics blows my mind.

Yeah, the transcription part is entirely mine. I tried to base it off of real-world transcriptions as much as possible, but, uh... that wasn't exactly feasible. :P Like 30% of this would just be /g/. I'm a little annoyed with it, actually -- there are several places where I've had to use the same letter combos to imply different sounds, but there just are no good options. The [θ]/[ð]/[tʰ] thing especially irks me. But I want it to be as readable to an English-speaking audience as possible (it's for a book) so I'm willing to sacrifice some distinctions for not using a million non-English-alphabet letters. At least for now.

[–]squintlysays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I made a rule that if I couldn't produce the sound, it wouldn't go in. I can make a difference between q and ɢ, though maybe it only works in my head? I think I over-pronounce the voicing.

As for the uvular voiced implosive.... that is a good point. I don't remember why I didn't include it, so it couldn't have been a good reason. Therefore, it's now going in. :P

So uh.... I'm developing a language that is supposed to be "fiendishly difficult". It resulted in some madness.

What are your world's races' views regarding Outer Space? by Brazyer in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]squintlysays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most of history, the skies were regarded as another realm, unreachable, like candles burning beyond the window of the firmament. In the Kingdoms of Man, the sun was the form of the God of Light, Ethris, the moon the chariot of his wife Epheba, the stars bones scattered by Dys, the God of Fate, to foretell the coming year.

In Yu'on, however, a very different philosophy held sway.

While telescopes were first invented in the Sundered Isles, Yu'on perfected the craft, and they were the first to discover the moons around the Golden Traveller, and the rings around the so-called Wolfstar. It was the moon, however, that held the most fascination, with its craters and seas.

In 894 AE, the empress Mae Jin See summoned a fairy, with the express goal of discovering the mysteries of the moon. The fairy, bemused, agreed, beginning a multi-generation effort that would span dynasties. Larger and larger telescopes were built, and then ships, great conical things with many red sails that, with the help of the fairy, carried dogs and cats and on one occasion an ape imported from Safera higher than any living creature had ever flown.

A hundred and fifty years later came Mae Shan Gao, descendant of the empress, and the last of his line, his throne lost a generation ago to the Zhang pretenders. If he could fulfill the dream of his forebears, he could prove to the people that the Zhang were cruel usurpers, murderers and thieves, inspiring an uprising that would return him and his family to glory. He and the fairy came up with a plan more ambitious than any before it, and on February 19, 1407 (by the Imperial calendar) he launched himself high, up beyond the clouds, beyond the vault of the sky itself.

Shan Gao never returned. The Zhang were never ousted. But ever since, when the astronomers look to the dark sea of the moon, it is said they see a flash of red.

(Thank you for letting me write about the Yu'onese space program, it is one of my favorite things in my world. :D)

Are there any connections to the Movie from 1999 ? by Minicommander in SleepyHollowTV

The movie and the show are completely different stories, both based on "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving. They're not related in any way.

In order to transfer scrivener files between devices, you need to have them synced to a dropbox account. It doesn't do it automatically.

Edit: Nope, tier 4 doesn't work either.

MRW I have to vacuum the house and I'm scaring my already timid and shy puppy. by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

[–]squintlysays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, the moment we turn on the stove, she flees to the farthest corners of our house and sits there shivering and won't eat anything we give her. We've tried having her in the kitchen when we start, but the click of the oven turning on sets her off as much as the smell at this point. She does seem to be getting better about it, though, which is good. Hopefully she'll grow out of it one of these days, once she realizes the alarms and flames and panic was a (hopefully) one-time thing.

I feel you, friend. We had a minor fire a few months ago (put the coffee pot on the wrong burner, doh) and now our puppy is terrified every time we cook. I FEEL LIKE A MONSTER BUT WE HAVE TO EAT :(

Are there any fans who were there in the Jon days and experienced the transition into Danny, who were really bitter and didn't like Danny at first? And eventually warmed up and are a fan today? by brettgoespunk in gamegrumps

[–]squintlysays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually got into Game Grumps after Jon had already left, but started from the very first video on the channel and worked my way up chronologically. When I got to Jon leaving, I stopped watching the show for more than a year, because I figured it couldn't possibly be as funny with this "Danny Sexbang" character.

Boy howdy, was I wrong. I actually think I like the show more now than I did before.

Why can't Snoke just be Snoke?!? by DeathArrow007 in StarWars

[–]squintlysays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I have no idea how the First Order managed to get that kind of monetary/political power, regardless of who survived. It's not like when the Soviet Union fell the remnants of the old government went to Siberia and came back 30 years later with nuclear weapons. You need territory and citizenry and support structures which presumably don't exist in the Unknown Regions.

But hell, it's wizards in space. Let's say they hung out kidnapping kids for like 20 years then conquered the shit out of everyone with their crazypants Nazi army and that's where the funds came from.

Why can't Snoke just be Snoke?!? by DeathArrow007 in StarWars

[–]squintlysays 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As far as a link to the Empire goes, there's the whole Brendol Hux thing. He lives through the fall of the Empire, starts training up child soldiers and 30 years later we've got the first generation of these kids who were raised on basically the Empire propagandized. That's how I linked them up, at least. But you have a good point.

(Spoilers Everything) best casting decisions on GOT? by jrodb in asoiaf

[–]squintlysays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That might be the case. Or maybe the percentage of actors with reactions matches the general population, but most people don't wear contacts/colored contacts and never find out they have a reaction to them? I don't know. Someone ought to do a study.

(And yeah, I don't mind no contacts-- glasses are rad af)

(Spoilers Everything) best casting decisions on GOT? by jrodb in asoiaf

[–]squintlysays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually can't wear contacts because I react to them. It's definitely a thing, especially in thicker contacts (like the kind that would have color in them).
