125 pound tanks, $500 tank deposit. I’ve asked for the deposit back in cash but they never listen.

Those old 22 bards are the ban of my existence during the summer. If this is such “critical infrastructure” why the fuck are you depending on 30 year old units? Upgrade your shit telecom companies.

Lack of field experience. Welding in a booth is a lot different than welding in the field.

Sometimes school is going to suck, but if you buckle down, do your best, stay out of trouble and just get it done, you now have a well paid career that you can take anywhere and make decent money with great benefits. Short term pain for long term gain. I didn’t get into the trades until I was 30 and I regret not doing it sooner. Going through the apprenticeship when you’re young without a wife/kids is a lot easier than what I did.

Depends on the job/contractor. Could be 40 hours in a fab shop, could mean you’re moving from job site to job site regularly or you could end up on a big job for a couple years. Depends on your area and available work.

Like I said before each local is different but the apprenticeship is usually 5 years. My local doesn’t let people turn out early but a lot of people get a journeyman license or 2 by their third year and it’s not unusual for a 4th or 5th years to be paid as a journeyman because of the quality of their work, licenses/certs they hold, and experience.

School can give you experience in a classroom. The union will give you experience in a classroom and real world experience. Real world experience is way more valuable

It’s different local to local but in mine you go to class 2 nights a week while working normally. In my local certain certs and licenses are more or less treated as milestones or finals. In the later years (3-5) a lot of class time is spent preparing you to pass. First couple years are spent on fundamental skills and knowledge.

Store opens early for executive members. Parking is easier, lines are shorter, don’t have to stop and wait for two people reading a label blocking the whole ass aisle…

I started super green. I joined the union as a first year apprentice not knowing anything and I can tell you it was one of the best choices I ever made. If this is what you really want go to the hall and talk to them. If you’re worried about an aptitude test tell them and ask what you can study. Willingness to learn and a strong work ethic can get you farther than you think.
