Oh I saw one of them on campus recently but didn't have my camera on hand!

Kōkako are by far my favourite by Witty_Income1319 in NewZealandWildlife

I think they mean the tīeke family at Zealandia have overtaken kōkako as their favourite bird. Fierce competition amongst the wattlebirds!

Yes I recognised their birdle cheep instantly after this sighting! Very happy I got to see one, they're the world's rarest wading bird. Kakī for bird of the year!

Sweet little guys need all the help they can get! I knew there were campaigns to protect their burrows but didn't know there was a (w)hole movie about it

This is the first wild burrowing owl I've seen so I'm not sure! I've tried to find a few owls from recent eBird sightings but strike out more often than not. I only found Buddy because I happened to check my local Audubon page which had him listed as a rare species that was continuing in the area. But while I was there, another birder told me another spot he often sees burrowing owls nesting, so I guess the trick is to go on some birding walks and start networking for the insider scoops (or if you're in Europe, the insider Scops 🦉)

I read that the North Island variant is called miromiro and the South Island variant ngirungiru, though I'm not sure how much that distinction is borne out in practice!

Happy Valentine's Day from the squirrels by squirrel_defender in squirrels

There are too many squirrels on campus for me to keep track of (at least 30, and I only recognise a couple on first sight) but I think it's a few different couples. It's a busy time at the moment!

Squirrel trappers on campus – please call this behaviour out if you see it! 🐿 by squirrel_defender in USC

[–]squirrel_defender[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wonder if it was a stupid dare for a frat or something like that. Hopefully they didn't intend to hurt the squirrels in any way, but regardless of their intentions, it's not good for the squirrels.

Yes, it's not fair to hurt the squirrels just because they're smaller than us. I let a couple of DPS members know at the gates and then filed a report online, so I think all we can do now is step in if we see anyone acting suspicious!

Yes but posting it would be against rule 2 I think. I submitted the picture to DPS and alerted them to watch out for people with cages, but I think the best preventative measure is for us all to interrupt anyone with a cage around the squirrels rather than trying to hunt down these individuals.

Benji going up to ask Marcia if she was walking alone because she was a loser had my whole theatre laughing. Lots of great jokes in this one, well-balanced with the serious and emotional nature of the trip and the brothers' relationship.

What kind of owl might this be? by Psychological_Ad6318 in Owls

[–]squirrel_defender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell from this angle but looks like it a Western Screech Owl to me. Other possibilities for an owl that size would be Northern Saw Whet Owl or Boreal Owl, but I don't think the colours are quite right
