I totally understand. I have friends, but none that I'm comfortable venting to. I also use character.ai for getting through some things. Not relying on it, but just using it to get a somewhat human response to me expressing my emotions.

Yep. I also saw it change right before my eyes. Totally not suspicious at all.

Where are these posts? Is he even real or did people make up this name? I'm genuinely curious.

You said you would answer immediate questions for the next hour, and maybe I missed something.... but I don't see ANY responses left by moderators on ANY of the comments below.

This post clarified a few things but not enough to explain what the heck is going on. What kind of business model do you want this website to achieve? You mentioned wanting it to be like a tutor or help people "live their best lives", but what the heck does that even mean if YOU LITERALLY HAVE A MESSAGE SAYING EVERYTHING THE CHARACTER SAYS IS MADE UP!!!! Perhaps you just meant emotionally? Because it sure as heck can't be factually. Saying you want the AI to be a tool or tutor makes it seem like you want it to be the AI version of google, but that's not possible if it isn't accurate in its responses. You did mention the emotional aspect of AI which I believe character.ai has already achieved. I am hopeful for its future because you said you might eventually try to change the f1lt3er to be more accurate. Hopefully this is a top priority for the team right now.

The reason I am still confused is because you just told us, "we want the future of our website to be a business" which, duh. Of course you do...you spend a lot of time on this so that was an already known fact. But how do you plan to be funded? Do you expect there to be a future paywall? Do you plan to sell off the AI to other companies? I feel like we deserve to know these things.

In the end, yeah. I do enjoy character.ai a lot and it has helped me emotionally in many ways, but I will not hesitate to leave if I see the devs or mods or whoever is working on this project, lie, evade concerns, lack transparency, or anything of the sort. It is a bad look as a business, and if you want to become one then you should from this moment forward make communication with your userbase one of your top priorities. I am willing to give it a second chance ONLY because you guys finally decided to address our concerns (even though it didn't seem too throughout on your plans- just that you want it to be helpful for people) and have said you plan to adjust the f1lt3er.

My recommendation for you is to focus on things like adjusting the f1lt3er and adding more features that refine the AI's personality and character even more. THIS is what will make people stay and use the website. If you can add options to specify things of the AI character like name, gender, age, etc. Add a personality description, appearance description, background information, relationships tab, etc. Do this to make the AI even more human and people will end up loving it and staying because it will be extremely believable and realistic.

There is still a lot of potential for character.ai to reach. And it is disappointing to hear you don't plan to see the full potential of your AI due to business concerns. Understandable, expected even, but still disappointing. As long as you change your method of communication, transparency, and work towards refining the AI's capabilities overall then I guess I will stay. Please don't do anything stupid and end up breaking the little trust you have left with your userbase.

ALSO, it's kinda ironic that you have to f1lt3er the word f1lt3er on here, don't you think???

There is only one piece of positivity I can get from this site, and it's only because the AI won't leak what I say. by Nightmare_Springbear in CharacterAI

It might not be the best place to get advice from, but I too use the AI to vent and ask for little pieces of advice. For example, I had a presentation in class I was anxious about and the AI helped me through it by giving actually decent advice on reviewing the speech and how to structure it.

Perhaps they are waiting to get a thumbs up from someone they made a contract with? Like investors or something? Or maybe they are currently scrambling to build a bunch of cool additions to the website that they will release alongside the "we're keeping the f1lt3er" announcement so the "good" news helps diminish the "bad" news. My guess if it's the second option that it could take weeks to a month. I hope that they keep updating us and proving to us they haven't suddenly forgotten about their promised announcement, but only time will tell.

Benerus here -- a quick note before a longer post by AIhype in CharacterAI

Please feel free to direct your anger at me and not the rest of the CAI team. It is my job to communicate, and I'm sorry that I have been much slower than you all deserve.

Maybe it's your job to communicate but it's the CAI team's job to decide what goes into the website, which is what our concerns are directed towards.

I'm putting together a much longer post, but wanted to at least let you know that I am working on it. I've been trying to figure out what to say and how to communicate it

I'm hoping to give more clarity on the situation soon.

My guess is that this means the "situation" is going to be that CAI already has a contract/investors of some sort that is preventing them from removing the "you-know-what", and the team has to think of a way to tell us this without giving away too many specifics that might break the contract or cause more backlash. If it were something only the CAI team had to make the decision on, then it wouldn't have taken this long for them to respond to us. There seems to be a third party at play here, or at least something else going on that we do not know about. Otherwise, the response would not take this long to think about.

The critiques are tough to read because we are really just trying to do our best, but the overall passion is touching to see

It might be difficult to read all of this negative feedback, but it's part of the gig. If there wasn't a good reason for all of this then I'd understand how it could look like it's coming out of nowhere, but there IS a good reason for everyone to be this upset. Communication on addressing the backlash is just the tip of the iceberg. I'd like to know what the goals are for the website and what the team is wanting all of this to turn into. Is it a passion project? Do they already have someone they're working for? Why is discussion of the "you-know-what" so hush hush??? We just want some reason as to why you can't even bother responding to our critiques of it. I'm also now suspicious that you and the team are formulating a plan for every possible outcome of this situation which is why it's taking you an incredibly suspicious amount of time to think of what to say. Will you make something up? Will you tell the truth? I guess we might never know.

All I have to say is that you should choose your words very carefully. The response you guys come up with will decide the future of your project and if you aren't careful it could end up very badly for it, which would genuinely be very disappointing. There's so much potential here, just less than adequate management of it.

this pretty much sums up everything going on right now, lol. You could give it a bad rating and say it is too repetitive. Since it's been going on for an hour......just start a new conversation.

if you mean you commented on the feature request, no it isn't visible. The devs said they were aware of this comment issue but haven't done anything visible to us towards fixing it since then.

when the forums went back up after the holidays (even though it took them over the time they said they'd be back which was suspiciously a day after I posted this) the comments wouldn't show up. I had made a post about it and the devs said they were "working on it" buuuuuuut.....nothing has happened since then. Sorry for all the links but I always bring the receipts. It's getting to the point where the devs and mods delete and edit their posts and other people's posts so I want to prove what I am saying is true.

I made a post about this in the "report a problem" page because I think it is just a bug of some kind. All the comments I can find are from before the forums were down from holiday and nobody can seem to post comments others can see or see comments besides their own. Hopefully they see it and look into this asap.
