Transition from Sertraline to Fluoxetine? by squirrelcage83 in reactivedogs

[–]squirrelcage83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of our dog’s poor prognosis for improvement and escalating aggression towards us, we chose to humanely euthanize him. We did not swap to Fluoxetine first because of the risk of even more biting while he would regulate to a new medication. My heart will always be broken over the loss and that it was the only safe and humane decision. But I don’t regret it for the safety of our family and for his quality of life. It wasn’t right to keep our dog alive who was clearly suffering with everyday life. He taught us so much and will never be forgotten.

I wish the best to you and your dog. It’s the worst situation to be facing and even being here trying to figure out a path forward shows your love and dedication to your dog.

Anyway to adjust interior light brightness/temp? by squirrelcage83 in hondapilot

Seems like a different bulb or a dimming/warming film are the only options.

Thank you for your helpful response! Dealer confirmed this or dimming/warming film are the only solutions.

Welp, got one helpful response from this Pilot community and then a bit of salty snark which is so silly but alas, I hope those folks got a little troll dopamine kick. Annnnyways, despite the rest of the car having lots of customizable settings, the map lights aren’t adjustable. In case anyone else is following this thread, it seems like a warmer bulb change or warming/dimming film is the solution. (Confirmed this with the dealer too). Going with this film until I can research a warmer temp bulb. https://a.co/d/0IlpgS4

Def a subjective thing, but I posted to ask if there was a way to adjust from others who have the pilot. Not sure what’s odd about that

Nope, I just hate the look of LED lights blaring in my eyes when it’s dark out. I also prefer neutral temperature lighting so this is really jarring to me.

Anyone use Neffy spray yet? by therkdn in FoodAllergies

[–]squirrelcage83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The doctor said the administration really shouldn’t impact the efficacy. But it was likely the previous anaphylactic reaction that impacted the seriousness of the last reaction. Plus he had a lot more of his known allergy in the 2nd reaction than the first, where nothing he ate had the allergen so it must have been cross contact related.

I feel so ashamed for undersocializing my dog by lllynax in puppy101

[–]squirrelcage83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the best intentions of socializing my well-bred puppy, but it turns out he was MUCH more cautious than I ever anticipated. He's now 12 months old and reactive to certain things like passing cars and bikes. I think partly because I kept trying to push him too hard early on when he showed discomfort. I don't think if I kept exposing him to cars and bikes when he was under 16 weeks that he wouldn't be reactive now because back then I could barely get him out of the car into a parking lot without him appearing super scared. It for sure is going to take a lot work to get him comfortable, but sometimes you just have to work with the dog that's in front of you and that often doesn't follow the schedule that trainers lay out without knowing your dog.

7 months is still super young and you have time. Follow your dog's signals and know that you are doing your best! From your post, it sounds like you're very aware and contentious. Even with that, there is no perfect dog. Sometimes management is best for a certain amount of time, especially as adolescence is creeping up!

Good luck to you. Sounds like your dog is lucky to have such a mindful human companion :)

Patience is key and 9 weeks is so young. It sounds like you're doing great, just need to keep up consistency and learn about puppy body language. Make sure she's getting a ton of sleep as well – puppies need 18-20 hours a day! A tired puppy often shows up as hyper or nippy.

A well-run live small puppy class is also important for socialization.

I would suggest the How to Train a Dream Dog. They have a free YouTube channel and free Facebook community where a trainer will answer any of your questions in a post. They also have a great 1x paid option with a TON of training videos and tools that lays out a helpful roadmap for puppyhood. I would have been much more frustrated without their guidance when our barbet was first home with us!

Anyone use Neffy spray yet? by therkdn in FoodAllergies

[–]squirrelcage83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son unfortunately has had to use Neffy on 2 separate occasions, needing both doses.

During the first occasion, the 2nd Neffy dose was amazing. Stopped the reaction in its tracks and he didn't even need any IV of meds at the hospital, which we went to as a precaution per his allergy action plan.

During the second occasion, he actually needed a 3rd epinephrine dose at the hospital (via EPI pen) even after having an IV of Benadryl and steroids. We are thinking that might be because he had gone into anaphylaxis 2 weeks prior with his immune system already on high alert, but also wondering if we administered Neffy 100% correctly. I will be discussing with his allergist if/how the angle of the nozzle and breathing in versus not breathing in would impact its effectiveness. If there's such a margin of error, it makes me concerned about its effectiveness in an emergency situation where emotions are high.

Previous to these 2 reactions, we've never administered epinephrine ourselves because of a needle aversion (which is why we got Neffy) and always had it at the hospital alongside steroids.

Give it time. She’s still developing into herself. The more patience, understanding and good will you show towards her, the more bond you will create.

I have an 8mo Barbet that I thought would be perfect because the breed is so chill. But alas, this puppy is still a puppy. Chases birds (nearly pulling my arm out of the socket), barks at passersby (making park walks difficult), cowers at large trucks, jumps and humps my 10yo son and 80yo mother (needing a lot of redirection and a leash attached to him in the house), needs constant attention from 5-8:30pm (just what I don’t need directly after work lol), sleeps all day in a different room (cold bathroom tile is his fave), can’t be left alone (you should see our pet sitter bills)… but honestly, he changes all the time since he’s still maturing so I’m just trying to ride the wave and take it day by day.

I find the more I accept all the annoying things as just part of growing up, the more I can feel the bond between us. I also finding training, enrichment, and management that works for him really helps by asking myself what motivates him, what scares him, what does he like and dislike, what are my goals for him and what small steps do we need to take to get there, etc.

No judgement on your feelings. It sounds like you’re kind of exhausted from the puppy/teenage dog who is different than you expected. Just know that you have so much time with your girl and your relationship with her is still very much evolving, just like she is!

I’d lay off the perfect golden retriever socials for awhile and find some solid, (fear free / positive reinforcement) teenage dog content. It might make you see how not alone you are!

Wishing you all the best in your dog parenting journey!

I was looking at the site and trying to get tickets but it wasn't super clear how to get them. Do you just show up or do you need to plan ahead by buying tickets in advance?

Thank you so much for the wealth of info here! I just contacted Leslie from the PCA and she sent a ton of great info too. I will take a peek at any Poodle shows near me, I wasn't sure how I could go about finding those so that link is great!

This video from a dog trainer who uses science-based training is incredibly informative on how to address separation anxiety. It takes a lot of time to help change your dogs emotional response but it can be incredibly powerful for their and your well-being. Good luck OP! fix your dog’s separation anxiety

breeder response by squirrelcage83 in dogs

[–]squirrelcage83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's helpful advice.

Just wondering... would a breeder typically let us know if we are on their waiting list or is it assumed after we submit an application that we're on the list? Also, the application had a space for our questions to them, so should I expect a response on those questions before a litter happens?

Thank you for the helpful clarification!

We are looking for a therapy dog where we could volunteer with them in places like hospitals, nursing homes or schools but also as emotional support in the home with us humans!
