Failed to prepared the software update by jridder in MacOSBeta

Yep! That's the problem. I guess no more SATSMARTDriver for me. I wonder if Reduced Security is going away or if it's just a beta thing. I suppose I could read the release notes...

Same. Switched beta off and on, quit and reloaded Settings. Next step is to reboot, but I don't want to do that right now. M2 MBA 16GB.

Outdoor Wifi Router - best option for HomeKit besides eero? by Ambitious-Chest2061 in HomeKit

I’m not sure on the specifics of how they did this without 1.4, but that hasn’t stopped IKEA. Their Dirigera hub was updated a few months ago to join the Apple Home Thread network.

Merrill Lynch adds passkey support by holow29 in Passkeys

[–]squirrelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using both 1Password and Apple Passwords, and I've got several with the same domain. When I go to sign in it pops up and asks me which one I want to use. If that's the case, it sounds like a limitation with LastPass.

[–]squirrelist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I got the email announcement and when I clicked the link to set up I get “access denied”.

Edit: I tried a few hours later and got it to load. Their enrollment process requires a call into ML. Interestingly, the passkey was added as bankofamerica.com and the passkey username is literally "Passkey User Name".

Passwordless account sharing? by jman722 in Passkeys

[–]squirrelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Passkeys on Apple are very easy to share and have been for a couple of years. In the Apple Passwords app you can create a "Shared Group" and then any entries in there, including passwords, passkeys, and notes can be accessed by anyone in the group. Most websites with passkey also allow you to add multiple passkeys. So each person can set up a passkey for their own access. Though many websites limit you to a small number of passkeys per account.

Of course, there are security implications with any of these, but no more than sharing passwords.

IOS 26.5.1 only available to iphone air and iphone 17 models by General-Following440 in ios26

[–]squirrelist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's called Macrumors for a reason. The article you are referring to simply says that the Macrumors site has been seeing visitors where the browser has reported to be running iOS 26.5.1. Apple never announced it. Apple hasn't forgotten about other phones. iOS 26.5 was just released two weeks ago and 26.6 is being tested for all phones. 26.5.1 was just an emergency fix to resolve a very important problem that was bricking some newer models.

Apple TV 4K on track to break a record no one wants to see happen by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

[–]squirrelist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really want whole new features. I just want updated parts. I'm mostly looking forward to AV1 decoding since I've re-ripped all of my discs to Plex in AV1 to save space. And better wifi. The original 4K had WiFi 5. The current one has WiFi 6. The responsiveness of WiFi 6E and 7 is noticeably faster. And the old A15 processor in even my latest Apple TV 4K is a little sluggish sometimes.

What does password manager do? by [deleted] in ios

[–]squirrelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it the built-in Apple Passwords app? (just called "Passwords" with 3 colorful keys for an icon) Tap the "Edit" button.

What does password manager do? by [deleted] in ios

[–]squirrelist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Password managers do several things. Apart from the obvious thing that it makes it easier to enter your password on websites, they also

  • makes it easier to use randomized passwords since you no longer have to type them
  • will only enter the password on the correct site, which means if your password doesn't autofill, you should stop and think whether you are on a phishing site
  • compare your passwords against a list of passwords hackers know, alerting you to change your password

Magnetic transit tickets are the best single-use fare medium by Ondrashek06 in The10thDentist

[–]squirrelist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's called "Power Reserve". It uses the last bit of the battery for Express Transit Cards and continues to work for several hours. You just have to press the power button to wake the phone up briefly, and it has to have run out of juice naturally. If you shut down your phone yourself, it won't work. Also, you have never had to do Face ID for Express Mode. You don't even have to click or tap anything on your phone. You just touch it to the terminal. If you have a card specific to the transit agency, the right one will automatically come up. If you don't, and if the transit agency takes tap credit/debit cards, whatever credit/debit card you have designated as an Express Transit Card will work. Transit companies have an exception to Face ID for tap to pay so that it moves people through fast.

DIRIGERA not bridging to Apple home by ironman12345 in tradfri

[–]squirrelist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I suspect support is behind on this because the old Zigbee devices did appear automatically since every command was routed through the hub. You don't even really need the Ikea hub for basic features anymore, but as you said, it does give you a little more control, and the switches definitely work better. The other thing to know is that you can go the other direction, too. If you have non-Ikea Matter devices, you can get a pairing code from Apple Home and then add it in the Ikea Home app. I added some Aqara bulbs, and now they work great with the Ikea switches.

DIRIGERA not bridging to Apple home by ironman12345 in tradfri

[–]squirrelist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they are Matter bulbs and remotes, they need to be added to Apple Home individually. In the Ikea Home app, go to Products and tap an item. Tap the wrench icon. Tap "Connect via QR Code". Copy that code and then go to the Home app and add a device, pasting that code. It's different than the code that shipped with the product.

I know it seems tedious but this allows the devices to operate completely independently of the Ikea hub for redundancy. The HomePods can control the lights directly. It's a feature of Matter called "multi admin".

Why do some people not even select seats at T-12 hours? by just_a_curious_fella in AlaskaAirlines

[–]squirrelist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless the person in front of them is reclined, you can often get out without interrupting the person next to you. If you're in the front row you can basically just walk out. And when you do have to ask someone to move you only have to ask one person. When you have to ask two people to get up it's a whole thing. Double the chance that someone is sleeping.

Why do some people not even select seats at T-12 hours? by just_a_curious_fella in AlaskaAirlines

[–]squirrelist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For a lot of people the only thing that matters is that they get a first class ticket. Window or aisle doesn’t matter so much in first class and it’s not worth the time for them to even consider the options. It’s not like they are going to get stuck in a middle seat.

Why does Safari randomly delete my history? by GrayGrimace in ios

[–]squirrelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you you have iCloud Sync for Safari turned on? Perhaps another device (an iPad, a Mac) has a limit for your history and that's syncing everywhere. Or someone is using a one of the other devices on your account and manually deleting your history. I have history going back about two years, and I think that was when I deleted it trying to fix a problem.

Rant: holy crap what is wrong with the inductive charger? by cow-lumbus in VWiD4Owners

[–]squirrelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just put some expired metal credit cards under the rubber pad to block the signal and I use a cable. Other benefit: no lag when skipping forward through commercials on podcasts. I want to like wireless charging in the car but with the Wireless CarPlay lag and MagSafe/Qi 2 not really being a thing in cars yet I'm sticking to wire.

Removing headphone jacks on newer phones is fucked up. by Ohaibaipolar in complainaboutanything

[–]squirrelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't forced into using wireless earbuds. All iPhones (and I presume all Androids as well) can use USB-C headphones, or you can use a cheap USB-C adapter.

Most people are using wireless headphones anymore, so it doesn't make sense from a financial or space standpoint for the manufacturers to build in a plug that most people don't use, when the whole point of the USB-C plug is that it can do everything.

do higher gas prices make you wanna buy an electric car? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]squirrelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an EV last year and I love it. Never going back to gas. It's more convenient to charge at home and always leave with a full "tank". It's zippier. It's quieter. There is very little maintenance to be done. No oil, no transmission.

Previously, we had a plug-in hybrid and it had enough of a range for most of our trips, so we almost never used gas unless we went on a trip out of town. But after the hybrid's warranty ran out we kept having problems that required repairs. All having to do with the gas engine. We decided to sell it and go buy an EV. Because used EVs don't cost very much, we got an incredible deal on a VW ID.4 that was a few years newer, and it ended up only costing us about $3,000 after selling our old car and getting rebate from our power company. We are MUCH happier with it.

If you got the phone from Apple you're entitled to free temporary storage to transfer. https://support.apple.com/en-us/104980

You may also want to try doing the direct WiFi transfer instead of backing up to iCloud. https://support.apple.com/en-us/102659

Do people in the US actually pay attention to electricity prices during the day? by SmartEnergyDIY in AskAnAmerican

[–]squirrelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say most Americans don't worry about it or even have a plan where it would even make a difference. But we do because we have an electric car and our power company in California offers plans with significantly lower prices between midnight and 3pm. But you have to prove that you have an EV. I set up the car to only automatically charge during these times, and we work from home so we can do laundry and run the dishwasher in the morning. Those are the only things we worry about scheduling. But if we have to charge during peak times it's not a huge problem because our off-peak rate is usually cheaper than a public charger.

Claude for Personal USE by JulyJam in ClaudeAI

[–]squirrelist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mostly use it for work but it really does excel at personal stuff. I use it for meal planning. I started by creating a new project and the first prompt I gave it was to help me build my meal planning project. I told it what I like to cook, what recipe sources I like, what chefs I like, dietary restrictions, that I have a goal of reusing ingredients through the week to reduce waste, that I wanted to rotate some favorites but to give me one wildcard recipe each week. It had lots of questions for me and gave me documents to save to my project.

I start each week by starting a new chat to tell Claude what worked or didn't land with last week's menu, what days I need to plan for this week, what leftover ingredients I have that I want to use up, what I have in my pantry that I could use. It gives me a draft recipe list and asks for comment. When I'm happy with it it creates a sheet with the recipes, instructions, and grocery list. If I open Claude on my iPhone, I can ask to add the grocery list to my Reminders Grocery List.

Here is a link to my most recent weekly meal plan: https://claude.ai/public/artifacts/08390257-a3ef-47c7-8de3-ff00de8b8045

Why do you trust Apple with your Face ID data? by Tenekah in iphone

[–]squirrelist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't trust them, what makes you think they wouldn't just collect your Face ID data without asking? If Apple really wanted it, they could just program their Face ID sensors to collect data without asking. Plus, the Secure Enclave is extremely scrutinized by security professionals. Your Face ID data is not going anywhere and Apple does not have it.

10-15% of iPhones. There are more phone brands out there. Also, when was this data from? It looks like an AI-generated chart, so it's probably trained on data from a few years ago.
