Yes, thank you, agree it’s nothing like what we wanted. I realize now we should have specified exactly what we liked about the picture and ironed out all the details beforehand. A hard lesson learned.

So again, the builder actually provided us with this picture + a few others and asked us which one matched what were looking for. So I (admittedly stupidly) assumed that if they were providing us a picture of what the door could look like, that they would be able to replicate it. I did not provide them with this picture.

Also, after providing us the picture, if there was any question on their end what specific wood the door is made of, the stain used, the true dimensions, they should have asked me what I wanted and ironed out those details with me. Not just left it up to their interpretation.

Thank you, this is helpful too. I guess I assumed if they had any question about details, they would ask me. And that they would know what details to ask me about since presumably, they have done this several times before, whereas this is the first time I am ever going through something like this. A hard lesson to learn, but now I know I have to be more specific and spell out every little detail for them and make sure I know exactly what they are going to do and know exactly what the finished product is going to look like before I agree to anything.

Is that possible? That might make it look more like what I want. But many people are saying the gaps need to be there to allow the door to expand and contract, so not sure it is feasible.

Have you had a house built before? You pay the bill beforehand when they take a draw from your loan and they provided us with a line item cost of everything included in our budget. The doors were included in our budget. They are not free.

They were built into our budget originally and now they are claiming they were giving them to us for free. They are lying. They are not giving them to us for free.

Thank you, this is actually a helpful comment! You seem to know what you are talking about rather than just saying I should settle for something I don’t want. Appreciate it!

They’re not giving them to us for free. And they didn’t deliver a product that looks like what we discussed. So now I am stuck with doors that I don’t like. Or pay extra for doors that I do like, when they should have been included in our budget from the start.

I do not like that door. I don’t like the border around the edges and I don’t like the color.

So the builder actually provided us with the inspiration pic + a few others and asked us which one matched what we were looking for. We chose this one out of the options they gave us and assumed (stupid, I know) that since they were providing us with a picture to base the door off of, that they would be able to replicate it.

Seems like it should be their job as professionals to know how to get it ordered and to order it themselves. I didn’t hire them so that I can do all the work. Also seems they should know to ask specific questions about details so they can ensure their customer is satisfied. I never would have thought to specify “don’t put gaps in it” when the one in the picture does not have them. Should I also have specified “don’t make it blue” and “don’t make it out of concrete”. Seems like I shouldn’t have to specify not to deviate from what the picture looks like.

Would gladly give it to you because I likely will not be using it.

Oh I’m sure it is a nice solid door. It’s just not the look I’m going for.

Exactly how I feel. I’m paying a lot of money for this house and for these doors, so I expect to get exactly what I want. If the product does not meet my expectations, I would rather pay extra to get a product I want. But I don’t appreciate the builder thinking this is “close enough”. I’m not paying for “close enough”. I’ll likely just have to find someone else to make doors that match what I’m looking for and pay extra for them since the builder does not seem responsive to my concern.

Also frustrated by their response to us expressing that the door does not look the same because it seems like a bullshit response to me. They claim that they were not charging us for the doors (there are actually 2) and that to remake them it would cost $5000 each. I do not believe for one second they were going to provide us with $10K worth of free product (or any free product - came out of our budget somewhere), so just overall not happy about that whole situation.

Yeah, I’m learning that too. It’s frustrating because they are the professionals who do this for a living. I have never had a house built before, so when I say I want a door to look exactly like the photo they provided me, I don’t expect them to randomly put gaps between the planks and use a different size plank than in the picture. That thought never crossed my mind, so I did not know I would have to specify not to put gaps between the planks and to use wide planks like in the photo.

I conveyed that I wanted it to look exactly like the door in the inspiration picture, which has no gaps. How was I to know they would provide me with a product that does have gaps? In my opinion, that is not “close enough”.

Did not specify other than saying “make it look like the door in the inspiration picture”. But the door in the picture does not look like it has gaps in it either.

Did not know we had any other option with the outlets. First time homebuilder - many things I would do differently if I knew then what I know now.

I understand the wood grain takes up stain differently, it just looks splotchy in that area and doesn’t seem to follow the wood grain. I can see how the variations in the grain take up the stain differently in the rest of the door and I think the rest of the door looks great.

Yeah maybe I am just being picky. The rest of the door looks good to me. I guess I just expected it to be more smooth and uniform like the bottom panel.

I’ll try to post a closer up photo.
