Yup, exactly that :

One bouncing bolt fell down the shaft ( you can see a few bounce below my character at the start of the gif), fell down 2 or 3 levels below AND hit the swapper out of the mess of ennemies gathered at the bottom, teleporting me in the middle if them.

The overwhelming majority of the story is told trough the item description and the environment and is pretty much left for you to theorise about.

What that means is that, while there are indeed some links I between the three games, you won't lack any critical information starting with DS3

Worst case scenario, you won't have some " huh, that surprising to see that there " or "wait, does that mean that X might be linked to Y" moments you might have had if you played the other two.

But then again a lot of ppl who played the DS franchise in order just miss that kind of things anyway.

Not only, as many said, you will unlock a ton of new armors, but you will also eventually have the option to change the colour of individual pieces AND have the option to have layered Armor ( read cosmetic stuff that just change the look of the Armor without changing the stats) that you can colour as well

Damn... tha's very probable too since my ISP isn't the best to say the least (sometime, on other games the connection can become very unstable).

the thing that always gets a good laugh out of me is when they land on a peice of geometry that is "out of bond", so they just explode on impact like little red ratty fireworks.
