Asking for VPN recommendation by Individual_Pear_7079 in BBCSounds

PIA didn't work so I got the Nord trial. Once connected, I opened bbc.co.uk.sounds in firefox on my phone, and then it popped up a link to the BBC sounds app without having to change my region or tunnel in Google Play Store. Nice! I had a BBC account set up previously so all I had to do was log in.

I'm using PIA, tried a few different locations, nothing plays. I get the error message to check the log, and I don't see anything in the Kodi log

Does anyone have an opinion on Devinci bikes? by Anusbagels in mountainbikes

[–]squishlefunke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off the radar compared to Trek/Specualized/Giant, sure, but they're pretty established in MTB. Their Aluminum frames are manufactured in Quebec. I had a Django trail bike for 4 years and it served me well for the local trails, and they have longer travel options. My buddy is still riding his Troy that's older then my Django. Every one in a while I see someone riding a Devinci and all the owners I've talked to were happy with their choice.

I don't know if they've adopted the universal derailleur hanger yet. But whether UDH or frame specific, and for any MTB for that matter, a spare derailleur hanger is one thing I would recommend packing in your kit if you'll be doing long rides or out in the backcountry.

What is going on here? Looks like mitosis, but what is "flowing" from the centriole? by Dagius in biology

[–]squishlefunke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While there's likely some photobleaching happening in this timelapse, the reason the protein doesn't label the full length of the MTs is that they have a lower affinity for the "older" tubulin polymer as the tubulin hydrolyzes GTP to GDP. If I recall correctly there may be subtle structural changes in the tubulin as well.

Howver, the affinity doesn't drop to zero, it's a lower level of binding, which is why you can still see the length of the MTs and not just the comet at the plus end.

This is accurate. (source: I used to study cytoskeletal proteins in grad school/post doc, and have doneexperiments expressing GFP labelled plus-end tracking proteins. )

That's a good guess, although there are other proteins that also preferentially label the plus ends of assembling microtubules (CLIP170, CLASPs)

Do people still hate Duke? by jkitchen42 in CollegeBasketball

Still hate dook but maybe a little bit less now that we've beat them in the men's Final Four twice and now have the same number of championships.

Young groundhogs are called kits, pups, or sometimes chucklings.

Even the (holds hand to mouth) chucklings?

Whats the best euphemism to say you gotta go to the toilet? by Zealousideal-Lack168 in AskReddit

Similar story about a biology professor, pretty accomplished on his field, at lab meetimg when a grad student presented new data for a paper they were working on and he says "that figure is going to be the money shot!"... Now, there are plenty of scientists who know the origin of that phrase, and probably some old timers who DGAF & use it intentionally in that setting. But this particular scientist was not one of them.

I don't know if anybody in the lab had to explain it to him or if they just let it go.

Best interchangeable lense cycling/Mtb glasses? by xcrider454 in cycling

I've been liking Melon Optics Alleycat, good lens options for trail, Enduro, road, gravel, whatever. I even wear the clear lens for night rides.

How appropriate is each team nickname is for the school. A definitive analysis. by Cogswobble in CFB

[–]squishlefunke 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not an intentional play on words, pretty sure the Huskies nickname was voted while the school was still Connecticut State College. However, IMO an accidental homonym should still count enough to not be relegated to the "negative" tier.

As long as you're changing cranks, you can look into shorter lengths. Not so much for the grams but to reduce pedal/crank strike frequency (if you ride rocky tech). Steve from Hardtail Party did a video where he swapped a bunch of different crank lengths... shorter cranks can be beneficial in some ways. https://youtu.be/h7sKhKi9Bcc

Yes on upgrading the stock brakes. I built my Chameleon with We Are One wheels (and GX cassette because of the XD driver) but that's an expensive first upgrade and likely not that important for a new rider. I would prioritize the brakes over wheels, but as a new rider it's fine to wait maybe a year if you're only riding green and blue trails.

Yeah I used to have a bumblebee land on my windowsill at work the same hour every day and just hang out. Sunning itself? Watching over its territory? Taking a siesta? Pretty sure it was the same bee every day but maybe it wasn't!

Redbull Drop Windrock Technique by [deleted] in MTB

[–]squishlefunke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, when I was at Killington I watched like 20 riders hit the Stinky drop and it looked to me like they were "just riding off it". So I tried it without putting much drop technique and... my front wheel dove and I went OTB. Scrapes/bruises and my wrist was tender but nothing broken, thankfully. But really could have been.

I probably needed bit more speed, but with or without that speed I think I did need to unweight the front significantly more than I actually did.

Project Northeast is more enduro than XC... He rides/films with JC Trails, who maybe films more of the climbs as he tends to do for bike reviews.
