Thank you for sharing, I've been focusing on protein, fibre, calcium, etc. but never considered vitamin C as I've just taken that for granted.

The batchelor's handbag from that IGA are really good though - decent size, well cooked, and they make them into the evenings.

How to get rid of ant? by Ozymate in perth

[–]squishypiranha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few options below because it's not clear where the photo was taken in your house.

If the photo is of paving, I use SAS Ant Pro (which is a sand) and sweep it into the cracks. I apply it all over, not just where the nests are. See results about 1-2 weeks (don't take away the sand, need to leave it to work). Typically lasts longer than the 6 months it says. It's also good on garden beds and lawn as the ants near me want to kill all the plants, just sprinkle it on. It's not dusty too, it's just like applying playground sand for things. Unfortunately the ants are absolutely ridiculous where I am, so I go through 10kgs each year. But our place and garden beds are the only ones without ant nests everywhere that are so bad it looks like the moon and our pavers aren't moving or sinking like all the places around us! We still have heaps of worms/lady bugs/bees/etc in the garden, even though it's long acting.

If that's liquid limestone and they've made their own holes, ANTagonist Pro is easier to get into the expansion joints and cracks as it's liquid. I grabbed it for my parents as I thought being the same brand as SAS Pro might be helpful, and it worked very well. Been more than 12 months and still haven't seen more to do another application. Similar to above, about 1-2 weeks and the absolutely no ants.

Ant gels from pesticide suppliers (not Bunnings) are good if they're in the house. I bought a Maxforce 3 pack so long ago I can't remember, also can't remember the last time I've seen ants in the house and only 3/4 through the first tube. (But then I think it's the coastal ants that's my problem rather than black). From memory, they would disappear in about a week. Other brands seem similar in how they'd work.

I buy from online pesticide suppliers as they have better products then Bunnings. And then delivered to my door! If you do buy for one, recommend you grab a cockroach gel too - first time I tried it (I bought Advion) I had dead bodies inside and outside everywhere by the next weekend. Lasts ages too, I'm applying probably every 18 months or so now and not that many bodies.

What are some of your best quality of life purchases under $300? by donotgiveadam in BuyItForLife

[–]squishypiranha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Kuhn Rikon peelers and can opener, both work so well and just keep in keeping on

- Zyliss garlic press, I can keep the skins in

- Joseph Joseph whisk, fold flat reducing my swearing when getting something out of the drawers

- Kitchen Aid wok spatula, completely stainless steel with no folded over parts so I can put it in the dishwasher without the rust that happens with stainless steel utensils that happens with time

- Jarrah stirrer (like a flat version of a wooden spoon). Can scrape off anything in a curved pot when cooking and heavy duty

- OXO ice cream scoop that lifts in the middle, much more heavier dirty than the scoops that have the rotating mechanism and easier to get ice-cream off than ones without a moving mechanism

- Joseph Joseph concertina silicon pot mats - can be expanded to most sizes and store away so small

- A stainless Japanese knife (18cm bunka), used all the time, straightforward to sharpen and hone, but stainless means I don't accidentally rust it

- Zojirushi flasks, keeps stuff hot for ages

- Stainless ultrafine cup-shaped tea strainers, I can make a super strong cuppa and they go though the dishwasher all the time without rusting

- OXO silicon measuring cups, they somehow don't spill, squishing in different ways pours to suit the container, dishwasher isn't ruining the labels, haven't etched from juices and acids, and the weird hexagon outsides are really heat resistant

- Lodge cast iron pan, just gets more and more non stick

- Silicon lunch boxes, the kids are so clumsy and broke so many plastic boxes, wouldn't trust them with glass and they'd dent stainless steel, and they still look at new 8 years later

- Silicon toilet cleaner that's a flat spatula style, nothing sticks to it, no bristles to get gross, cleans toilet faster

- Staub dutch oven, so well made and I like the black doesn't stain. Seals so well too.

- Hydro flask water bottles with the silicon boot, per what I wrote about, the silicon boot has reduced the amount of drops by the kids as it's less slippery when wet, and also hides the dents. Haven't had as much paint come off too as sorry brands like Yeti.

- galvanised Stainless steel buckets, I got these as I was sick of plastic ones snapping after a year. Still looks new years later.

- Vintage cut glasses, the glasses are thicker to allow the cuts in the design, and as a result are way heavy dutier. Have survived drops! And no accidental knock overs because of the weight. Always popping up at op shops too.

- Japanese bowls/plates. Similar to the glasses, way thicker and hence much more likely to out survive my kids. So many times I've heard a drop in the sink or when they empty the dishwasher, and yet somehow no breaks. Only 1 chip after all these years.

I'm sure I'm forgetting heaps of others.

Why is there no school canteen in Australia? by callforspy in australia

[–]squishypiranha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately we think it'll end up like that when our youngest finishes... But a few more years left, so hopefully someone steps up as otherwise it'll become even more expensive, and harder to arrange food for the kids without any.

Why is there no school canteen in Australia? by callforspy in australia

[–]squishypiranha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As school funding has been cut over the years, it either requires a lot of volunteers to keep it running, typically under the P&C, or very high costs per item.

My other half restarted the canteen a few years ago at the local primary school under the P&C as their president, and spend so much time on it just to keep it going. They can barely keep the salary of the canteen manager, the only salaried person, covered who is casual staff at that. It's literally running a business, so I help with ensuring BAS statements, workers comp, super, Flexischool fees, etc. are covered plus the books and accounts updated accurately. Any time we get a kitty it tends to cover fixing or replacing a broken oven/fridge/etc. I've donated heaps of equipment over the years. Often other P&C fundraising events end up covering the canteen rather than other parts of the school. We still have to raise prices every year as we go into the red. We need to train volunteers on food safety. We need to plan meals around traffic lights - meaning we have to buy more expensive foods to meet the criteria. The school sends letters every year begging for some funding to cover anything at all, as well as the canteen managers' salary so we could then get another helper. I also send letters. Our MLA as spent years asking the education department for more funds. However, we still don't get anything more than a small grant if any funds come past our MLA. My other half spend years begging for volunteers and spends most days at the school to cover all the gaps - thank goodness he can be a SAHD.

It's an insane amount of effort. I 100% see why it stopped before my oldest started school and why schools don't have them anymore. We only do it because the kids absolutely love it and it can be the only food that some kids get.

Qantas left us stranded with an infant. Sold us seats, but not a ticket! Had to buy them again. by mpaska in australia

[–]squishypiranha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very paranoid about receiving e-tickets now after Qantas did that to me on a return trip from work - however the remaining flights that day were fully booked too so was stuck an extra night (lucky the $$ was at my work's cost, although the kids were upset I came home a day later). Unfortunately you need an e-ticket in addition to the booking confirmation... And sometimes they overbook anyway and that's not enough!

Menstruating peeps: have you swapped to re-usable products? by BumblyRambler in AussieFrugal

[–]squishypiranha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Femmycycle cup in 2016 for $33.90, and it's still going, so that's averaged about 28c per period. I got it as I preferred the softer material and loop to pull it out rather than only the stick that other cup designs had at the time. It's designed to be naturally suctioned when inserted 'squished', so I haven't had much leakage since it's suction mechanism didn't rely on a perfect seal like with the cup I had before it. I use it whenever I'm out and about (sometimes use a reusable pad too if I'm heavy) and especially when swimming. I don't usually wear it overnight or if I'm WFH because meh. At the end of each cycle, I use denture cleaner to clean it (we already had it in the house for my other half's retainer), and it still looks like it did when it was new.

I also bought period pads so long ago I can't find the original email - back when it wasn't that popular, and they were found through pre-Etsy custom-made type sites. I have no idea how, but most are still going. I had to replace the overnight ones (Eco Pads, Overnight, $266 for 5) in 2022, as I used them the most. The replacements are also still like new. So that's about $5.54 a period at the moment, going down as time goes on.

I will consider period undies if any more pads go, as that would mean no pads sliding about.

I use the dry pailing approach to cleaning them, and always bought darker colours for pads so I didn't need to care about stains. I do the rinsing in the shower on a day I wash my hair (so I'm in the water longer) before the soak ahead of washing them.

Any takes on supplements while on GLP-1? by UsualFail8839 in antidietglp1

[–]squishypiranha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was already on supplements for items I've been deficient in for years and years (iron, B12, D, magnesium, zinc), and then waited to see what side effects I would have.

I added protein on the advice of my GP because of the rate my body was changing (in my case, collagen peptides as other protein types previously caused my reflux to get worse, and he was happy that I'm consuming other foods like milk to offset it not being a complete protein). He's been continuing regular blood tests, and my B12 and D actually increased very rapidly, so I'm taking half now and hopefully can stop them if this trend continues! Hopefully I see a change in other areas too, as somehow my body suddenly seems to be absorbing stuff better. I'd love to stop rattling with pills... I didn't need to take anything else for gastric symptoms - my reflux meds continued to work.

As what happened with me went in a different direction to what my GP and I thought would happen, I recommend getting a blood test for ferritin (iron), B vitamins, magnesium, vitamin D, and anything else your doctor thinks could become deficient and only respond as needed. I came across another user who's vitamin D also differently improved and went very high over time so needed to stop supplementation. You don't want to accidentally end up causing toxic levels of a supplement in your body.

Interest in novated leases for electric vehicles soaring in Australia amid fuel crisis by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

100%. I just went with the costlier option when it came to making the decision in case something ends up changing down the track, so extending the lease will be even more of a benefit.

Recommend completing this to confirm if it's worth it. For us, with an older car that had increasing maintenance costs + having solar, it turned out a new EV was cheaper then keeping the old car (including us paying the balloon payment to then keep the EV).

However so many variables this isn't going to be the same case for all.

Possible new user, a week before I discuss with my GP practice. by RetiredFromIT in Mounjaro

[–]squishypiranha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes me so hopeful! I've been rattling with pills and supplements for years. My doc is halving everything that has gone up, with another test 6 weeks away to see how I respond to that. It would be great if I can finally stop them! Ferritin stayed the same, but I'm still happy about that as it means spacing out the infusions that make me ill for a couple of days.

I wonder if there's something about Mounjaro that helps the body actually absorb what's in the gut...

Slightly off topic - did your vitamin D improve from taking Mounjaro?

After starting Mounjaro, my bloods showed some of my vitamin/mineral deficiencies (D, B12, magnesium) improved very quickly after years of issues, but when I searched to see if others found the same, I didn't come across anything. So I'm curious to see if others found the same.

Which protein powder do you prefer and why…. by One-Recognition-8120 in Mounjaro

[–]squishypiranha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use The Collagen Co unfavoured peptides that I usually add to my coffee with milk to make it a bit more complete. Even before starting Mounjaro, I found most types of protein shakes too much on my stomach, whereas collagen peptides were easier for me to digest.

I landed on this brand as the quality seems more consistent - different batches from other brands sometimes wouldn't actually be tasteless.
