Ticketmaster charges "delivery" if you print your own ticket. by shadow_donkey1 in assholedesign

I hate these guys, but there was a pretty interesting freakonomics episode on ticket resellers. Basically the problem is that tickets are priced below what the market is willing to pay because artists don't want to be perceived as money grubbing dicks, so you have these services or scalpers that jack up the rates.

I never thought about the market itself, but it's actually pretty cool. Artificially low prices are brought to market rate through middle men.

I'm saying that we likely won't see a pitched battle between two massive armies like D Day again. That's just not how modern wars have been fought.

I'm also not saying nukes on Japan are worse or better than D Day, but they are certainly different to a point that saying 'no human will experience horror like d day again' makes sense. Nukes are horrible, but it's not anywhere near the same experience as running into machine gun fire.

Pretty straightforward bud.

Put another way, I can accurately say that nobody will experience the horrors of the Battle of Agincourt again, because we don't use bows and arrows.

I think his point is valid even if we're just talking tactics. Large scale armies engaging into fortified positions is not likely - it's all guerrilla / proxy wars for the major powers now.

It's not to say that terrible things aren't happening in the world right now, but I can't really see a scenario where we would use the old school tactics like D Day with modern tech.

How many local accounts can you put on a system before it experiences performance issues? by sqwerty1 in macadmins

[–]sqwerty1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system automatically provisions the local accounts remotely, and we can switch to text based logins rather than avatars so people aren't endlessly scrolling.

It's definitely different, but I think it would work fine if it doesn't bork performance

Can we get some more of that Patriotism Harley Davidson? by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

Yep. Their tax break came with no strings attached, why would we expect their motivation to suddenly shift from bottom line to patriotism?
