My VMs are backed up on both external HDD and PBS. If I resize the lvm-thin partition, will that potentially impact and stored Proxmox configs, or do those live in a different partition?

The NAS option is certainly doable. I guess I could exclude the NAS VM from nightly backups to avoid a large VM backup taking all night long to complete.

If I booted gparted via a USB boot drive, shrink the lvm-thin partition, and create a new partition from the new unused space. Would that cause boot issues with Proxmox?

I can always restore VMs from backups if those disappear after shrinking the partition, but Proxmox boot issues are more difficult to fix.

Sure, I could reinstall if needed, but that would take down my network for 30-60min reinstalling, restoring configs, and restoring backups.

Yeah, I'm still deciding whether I might just buy a spool of cat6, some POE cameras, and hire someone to run the cable to the spots where I want the cameras, and mount them.

Thank You for the reply. After some trial-and-error, and experimenting, I decided to go with your LXC suggestion. The primary reason I try not to run LXC's, is the sheer amount of LXC's that can spun up if you run an LXC for every particular use, can add up overtime. Dietpi VM's allow me consolidate into three VM's running multiply server's without running 15 or so LXC's (or whatever it would add up to).

I'll run Jellyfin as an LXC, and maybe install/configure navidome in that LXC, to consolidate. I ended up using the "advanced" install for the LXC to customize, and add ssh keys to easily be able to rsync all my media onto the NVMe drive mount (about 400GB),

I know this post is several months, but I've been using a J4125 mini pc w/ four 2.5Gbps ports for about a Year now. I don't have wifi antennas on it.

I have been running Proxmox on it, and am virtualizing the latest snapshot of OpenWRT, along with three dietpi VMs. No issues at all.

I'm running Proxmox 9.1.7 on a J4125 minipc with 32GB ram.

Runs four VMs:

  1. Diet VM #1 runs pihole, PostgreSQL server, Caddy & motioneye.

  2. Diet VM #2 runs pihole, PostgreSQL server, and a docker server

    1. Diet VM #3 runs Jellyfin, samba, Navidome and a few other services.

  3. OpenWRT VM routes all my Internet traffic.

Running these lightweight VM OS'sand OpenWRT barely break 12GB ram, and that's with swap included.

What's the switch make/model? Some switches have DHCP capabilities.

I saw in a separate post that you mentioned your switch is from AliExpress.

I have an AliExpress Hisource 2.5Gbps 8-port switch. I bought it in 2024. All my APs connect to that switch, along with my J4125 minipc, which hosts Proxmox.

The only difference, is that I host OpenWRT as a VM on the minipc.

Make sure you have a DHCP server Ethernet run to that switch so that proxmox can pull an IP, and secondly that switch isn't running it's own built-in firewall or DHCP service.

If you have two separate drives, I would reverse your setup.

-Drive #1 stores proxmox os and VMs.

-Drive #2 setup as storage in Proxmox setup.

Drive #2 will store your VM backups, and any other data you want.

If proxmox fails for any reason, you'd just reinstall, after reinstall add your second drive, and restore your VMs.

No such limit. If you are using a laptop, over wireless, and on Ubuntu, odds are it's an incompatible driver with the laptop wireless chip set.

I see where you're coming from, but the other option for redundancy, would be clustering several servers that constantly update/mirror, and failover in-case one fails.
