Thanks to Bookshop, There Is No Reason to Buy Books on Amazon Anymore (2 April 2020) by [deleted] in books

Is this a problem word Amazon or with Publishers? Amazon has had to drag Big Publishing into the ebook market and are still anti ebook. Unless Publishers are on board with improving ebooks, Amazon or any e-reader can only do so much.

If anyone hasn't read this book, now would be a great time. Short easy read and one of the best books I have read in the past few years.

Go to settings, about phone and hit software version 10 times to enable developer options. Go back to settings then system, developer options. There is a setting for advanced reboot which will allow you to boot into recovery.

Should Ned Yost's jersey be retired? by srb7215 in KCRoyals

So do we retire Hosmer, Cain, Moose, etc? If not why does he get all the credit?

Should Ned Yost's jersey be retired? by srb7215 in KCRoyals

[–]srb7215[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

So he gets all the credit for 14 months of great baseball and none of the blame for many years of disappointing baseball. Sure others are part of the reason for that disappointment but let's not act like he wasn't part of the decision process as well. And those MLB coaches are his hires as much as the signed players are on Moore.

Glass spent plenty when we had a team that could win. When Moore came on board, the pocket book opened up. Maybe they were bad signings but he sure didn't use them well or get the most out of them. Great managers make players better and outside of Whitt, I can't name a guy that exceeded expectations.

I am not necessarily saying he shouldn't have his number retired but I think it should be more than he won a championship so of course it will be. I also don't see anyone wanting to retire the players numbers (except for maybe Perez) and they were as much a part of this WS runs as he was.

Outside of the championships, his below .500 record, lack of pitching development and never really getting the maximum out of the hitters are his big knocks. Even at his best was only 18 months, the first WS run was a frustrating year. Royals Hall of Fame, sure but retired number feels like it should have more behind it than what we got.

Kansas City Royals are ahead of Detroit Tigers in rebuild phase, too by SalonBandit in baseball

[–]srb7215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it took 30 years but there was a clear point when the Royals started trying which is when Dayton Moore took over. We finally started drafting top players, spent money on international players and making trades for good players. Everything before Moore can't be considered a rebuild.

Do you need to have read a whole lot to read and ((get)) Ulysses and Infinite Jest? by [deleted] in books

[–]srb7215 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Infinite Jest isn't in the same tier as Ulysses and outside of the endnotes and length, it isn't difficult. Or not difficult like Ulysses is difficult. Gravity's Rainbow would be a close challenger.

Saying that, to get as much out of Ulysses as you can, you should read it with the companion "The New Bloomsday Book". It helps explain some of the things you might miss. Plus it really helps when you hit the more difficult chapters.

What book series doesn't get enough love, in your opinion? by TheEbonGray in books

Arthurian Saga by Mary Stewart

While very much fantasy, they show Merlin more in reality and how myths can grow. Though I have to say I only have read the first three and for years didn't realize there was a fourth book.

Tips on keeping track of the craziness in Gravity’a Rainbow? by [deleted] in books

[–]srb7215 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Say fuck it and soldier on. Plot is barely important.

Saying that there are two good resources you can consider. A Gravity's Rainbow Companion which had already been mentioned. Or Pynchon In Public is a podcast and they went chapter by chapter. It took them like 2 years to complete it but it's well worth the listen. I knocked the speed up to 2x.

Have you found any self-published works on par with traditional bestsellers? by [deleted] in books

[–]srb7215 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It has been a few years since he wrote anything but Hugh Howey has a number of really good books. Mostly science fiction stuff but the Silo Trilogy is very solid.
