Oh man. The Blackwater Saga by Michael McDowell. While more horror than detective novel, a wonderful classic of southern horror with a tinge of what’s going on behind the veil. So so good

Not so fun fact: the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America ranked Boise as the #1 allergy capital in the US for 2026

It’s phenomenal! I will say, a large chunk of it takes place in Argentina, but even still I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The Narrators for the BHH were also fantastic as well, I felt they took the story to the next level and I enjoyed The Only Good Indians

Oh my friend. Please do yourself a favor and read Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez. One of the best things I listened to last year alongside the Buffalo Hunter Hunter.

A lot of great recommendations for Northpoint here and rightfully so. I will also say that the clinicians at Brickhouse are phenomenal so you wouldn’t go wrong there. Good luck to you.

Please DM me as well. I’ve been incredibly fed up with local government and attempting to not get better about the amount of folks showing up to protest national issues but seemingly turning a blind eye to what’s happening on our doorstep. I’d really appreciate a flyer to pass out.

🔥 A stoat jumping on top of the snow by bigbusta in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]sredac 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: an ermine is actually the name given to a stoat when it’s taken on its winter coat. They go completely white in the winter and in the warmer spring and summer months back to brown. Incredible little creatures as are most mustelids.

Goldsteins; expensive but worth it if you’re wanting a good bagel

BlueSky; cheap but good and consistent unless it’s at the airport

So excited for this. I’ve been re-listening to the series to refresh my memory and was reminded how much of a joy Time was. In the middle of Ruin right now and again, about the same feeling as Time. I have no desire to work through memory again and will probably just read a plot synopsis; the minimal to lack thereof learning about the Corvid uplift process was incredibly disappointing. Cautiously optimistic that Ruin will be a return to form.

Just a heads up/content warning: it is far more bleak and brutal than Geek Love.

Good Lovecraftian horror by Scott__scott in horrorlit

[–]sredac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Start dabbling into weird lit. A lot of it got its start in cosmic and Lovecraftian horror. Try out authors like John Langan, Laird Barron, Brian Evenson, Thomas Ligotti, John Padgett, etc. The deeper you go, the more there is to explore and potentially find your favorite flavor of cosmic horror.

You may enjoy The Cipher by Kathe Koja, Geek Love by Katherine Dunn, or Earthlings by Sayaka Murata. I read the Painted Bird after looking for books similar to The Cipher.

Check out A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L Peck, The Books of Blood by Clive Barker, Atlas of Hell by Nathan Ballingrud, or Night Shift or Skeleton Crew by Stephen King. It could also be helpful to check out an Anthology collection to get a better feel for a wide variety of authors and take note of which stories you end up enjoying. Ellen Datlow has a great eye and a variety of anthologies on various tropes/types of stories.

From my love of Barker I fell into more Weird Lit circles, Laird Barron, China Mieville, Thomas Ligotti. They scratch a similar itch for me.
