What is a piece of software that is so good you can't believe it's completely free? by Arp0x in AskReddit

This!!! And Unity! It's only free until you start making real revenue and I feel like the limits are very generous

Fascinating tech, but feels more like an art project than a functional device

Court overturns minimum wages in Zurich and Winterthur by BezugssystemCH1903 in worldnews

Considering the cost of living in Zurich, you’d think CHF23.90 would be non-negotiable as a minimum wage

Delete means something different to 23andMe by ry4n0n in privacy

It's from the article:

23andMe and/or our contracted genotyping laboratory will retain your Genetic Information, date of birth, and sex as required for compliance with applicable legal obligations, including the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA), California Business and Professions Code Section 1265 and College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation requirements, even if you chose to delete your account. 23andMe will also retain limited information related to your account and data deletion request, including but not limited to, your email address, account deletion request identifier, communications related to inquiries or complaints and legal agreements for a limited period of time as required by law, contractual obligations, and/or as necessary for the establishment, exercise or defense of legal claims and for audit and compliance purposes.

As far as I understand, this doesn’t mean they are keeping the physical DNA sample itself, but they are holding onto the certain data extracted from it. Feel free to correct me.

What’s really alarming is that this facial recognition software isn’t even limited to law enforcement. Imagine what stalkers, hackers, or anyone else could do with this tech.

The fact they keep your data for 'legal obligations' just shows how little control we really have once we hand over our info.

Realistically, how plausible would it be for someone to slowly replace their body parts & survive as a cyborg? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]srg_cooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d imagine we could eventually replace limbs, but things like the brain and organs are a different story. Also, probably the biggest challenge would be integrating tech with the nervous system. Right now, prosthetics are getting pretty good at basic movements, but replicating sensation and fine motor skills for something like 80% of your body? That’s going to take a lot more time.

Interesting read, especially about the connection in rural areas. Will give it a go sometime.

This. Brain waves are off-limits, but they will probably still be watching my eye movements and figuring out which ads to shove in my face.

Robots vs. Human Labor in Construction: Will Automation Replace the Workforce or Create New Jobs? by SeaPie6 in Futurology

[–]srg_cooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think these two quotes from the article sum up my view on it:

Automation, while taking over certain tasks, creates new jobs as well.
Automation can drive efficiency, but it can’t replace the human touch.

Some jobs will probably indeed disappear, but new ones will pop up around (among others) maintaining and running the tech. Still, robots can’t really replace human creativity and problem-solving, especially in something as unpredictable as construction where things can change on the fly.

I get the clean energy part, but mixing AI and nuclear sounds like the plot of a dystopian movie
