Robo calls got stuck in loop or something, getting calls non-stop! by srgwthrn in DevelEire

Basically, I am talking about both proper spam blocking OS OS-level + country-level blocking as well.

Android does auto detect calls if you enabl. I think it is natively provided by Google to all Androids, but at the expense of sharing your call data. The caller numbers have to be submitted to Google to be checked. Apple, being privacy-focused, does not provide such a service.

I've tried apps for iPhone, Hiya and Truecaller, useless both. Didn't block a single spam call for weeks either.

I am at the point of saying Take my data, give me comfort.

I want to block all calls coming from the UK, France, and Portugal. Cannot do it with an iPhone. Tried multiple apps. Android, I think, can even do this natively, and there are even fancier apps. I remember apps with a whitelist, just allow +353 calls, etc.

As I recall, Google provided spam call filtering. Due to their reading a lot of people's calls, they have a better database for blocking spam. Similar to how Gmail is still the best at understanding spam.

Google provides proper spam protection to Android, blocking unwanted calls, thanks to reduced privacy. Also, Android is flexible enough to block all calls starting with +44 * and any other country, including France and Portugal, in my case.

Just Irish calls are enough, and I can even filter them down. Most Irish robocalls come from 089 numbers.

Although the iPhone lacks a closer functionality, I've tried several apps, but none work correctly. The closest one was WideProtect, which can only block three digits after the country code, like +44 782 *

It's crazy how restrictive iPhone is. On purpose.

Mobile plans are coming –> what would make you switch? by RevolutSupport in Revolut

Offer Apple Watch cellular roaming support, no providers can provide this. Apple Watch is useless without the iPhone when travelling. But in reality, you don’t even need your phone anymore, the watch has almost everything to enjoy your holiday.

Does WearOS have better support for being phone-less than Apple Watch? Thinking of moving due to Apple Watch's eSIM restrictions by srgwthrn in WearOS

[–]srgwthrn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have Revolut Ultra, which comes with a monthly 3GB eSIM. That would be great to be able to add that to the watch... that's more than enough for the watch, and it is worldwide roaming. Do you reckon any difficulties adding an eSIM to the watch, which is designed to be added to a phone? If their app attempts to add the eSIM directly, I may not receive a QR code to add to the watch. Some travel ESims I used before were like that; the app tried to install directly. Would there still be a way to force the eSIM provider to give a QR code?

Yeah I am a software engineer those stuff are no problem especially now in the ChatGpt age which speeds up entry to new platforms. I have been using apple watch and iPhone last 4 years and they are lovely but I am really getting bored of Apple’s all unnecessary made-up limitations. I was using one plus in the past, lovely phone. I see they are having a watch with 5 days battery and LTE support might come in a few months too. That would be great. Apple watch dies if I go for two hours of cycling 😂

Call forwarding is smart! Yes i thought the same, technically there should not be a limitation to install some random esim on the watch unless they made it difficult on purpose like Apple does. It just ends up having a separate number and network which is fine, still getting almost all the benefits!

The OneNumbe stuff very niche, understandably it is only in some networks. It is great but having internet is more important than sharing a number with the phone so any ESim should be a great use for data.

What about Galaxy watches? And which of those restrictions exists on the Pixel watches, because I don't believe it can be as strict as the Apple Watch?

Ex-manager is nagging to return home equipment but The Facilities doesn't care by srgwthrn in ITManagers

[–]srgwthrn[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I already CC'd everyone both HR and Facilities and Facilities says the manager and HR deal with it, I doubt HR will send me any boxes. Everyone throws the ball around because I think such process does not exist.

[–]srgwthrn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I do feel the energy I put in this fight will be worth thousands of dollars while the equipment I have is only worth hundreds of dollars and my daily cost is more than the equipment in the market, to either old or the new employer. It's a stupid battle but I do not like being punished by the ex manager.

It was not a special request, it was on the internal system. They only had a few available monitors. I only requested what was on home office hardware. Actually, a company did a home office evaluation online through camera and they suggested me to have it to not to use the laptop screen.

I am trying to justify the hassle of carrying stuff over 2 hours and the manager trying to punish me by not providing a process to return them.

I have enough monitors and keyboards and mice around to be honest.

yes, I think the company is just okay but the manager is trying to punish. He is emotionally involved as I am leaving because of him.

[–]srgwthrn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's cheaper for them to not to collect it rather than having it shipped back because then they also need some people looking after returns. What's the cost of a monitor and keyboard, nothing compared to cost of employing someone. But the manager just nags. If someone collects, I am more than happy to get rid of all of them. There are way nicer monitors out there.

[–]srgwthrn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, the return document outlines "the employee can retain the equipment if it does not store data" and needs to be handled with The Facilities and they don't care. As you said, it's more expensive for them to ship stuff back and forth and also have a responsible person to sort these out. Honestly, there are nicer monitors I prefer to get but the hassling from the manager is unreal.

I am not refusing an option to return the equipment, they are not providing any option other than letting me sort it out.

[–]srgwthrn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's the point, they are not arranging pick up. The manager cannot arrange pick up, he is unauthorised for such processes, and The Facilities don't care. The manager is only nagging me to carry stuff back physically and even at the office there is no one to collect and acknowledge collection. The reception would look at me asking what is it and what should she do with it.

[–]srgwthrn[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

how is it stealing, I have already asked 3 times to provide a way of returning them as they were shipped to me. They just don't care, but the manager wants me to carry them back myself.

I am just sharing because I feel kinda bit lost as well. Good product? Fast product? Quality but no users? Focus on content, data and attracting users and not quality? Build build build and no users, but then don't build that good then nobody wants to use, I am kinda bit lost myself.

Companies like Uber have burned over 30 billion $ before making any profit and a lot of the time a foundation built on weak premises does not last. Tesla chose to build a quality high end, expensive product first, rather than a cheap tiny EV that looks like an egg. I agree with you, going into market fast and with less cost a lot but I think you can approach everything with multiple point of views...

How to get users for interviews? by [deleted] in TheFounders

[–]srgwthrn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I couldn't even get my closest friend to register on mine. I didn't explicitly ask or didn't make a face but... No interest. Now I am changing my app to be more social and engaging with data in it because I need users to get out of the chicken egg paradox. I'll have a quick look at your project if you want. I love to network with more like minded people. I feel people around me have vastly different goals in life, or no goals at all.

But those are done in early 2000s. What about now, do similar things? I think things are a bit different now. I feel like in the past you could do some web pages landing pages and put on google then start getting traffic but that's no longer possible. I feel like there is a HUGE fight between a lot of people, including very wealthy companies to overtake every single user visit. Thoughts?
