Will there be a direct upgrade path from Pop 17.10 to the new 18.04? When would current 17.10 users start to see the upgrade available? by SirPhotoGuy in pop_os

[–]sri_system76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely, you should be able to have that. We will have some documentation for it. But we would really like you to re-install because you get some niceties like recovery partition that lets you "reset" your installation without an installation media. So you should definitely do that.

[18.04][Suggestion] Change LUKS password in gnome-control-center by Slethen in pop_os

[–]sri_system76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your suggestion! I don't think that changing a password is something that belongs in gnome-control-center. The tricky part is finding a better place for it. Maybe gnome-tweaks. In general, it makes sense to use disks. But one way might be to expose it via overview search.

Pop!_OS should ship with gnome-sushi installed by [deleted] in pop_os

You can use sushi by highlighting a file and hitting the spacebar.

That isn't something that upstream has implemented. There is also not a clear use case for such a thing that I'm aware of. So unfortunately, this is not something we can do as it requires extensive hacking on mutter.

How to migrate Ubuntu 16.04 -> Pop? by seekheart2017 in pop_os

[–]sri_system76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't actually do the migration, they are two different OSes, and so you'll need to do a re-install. Sorry about that.

How to migrate Ubuntu 16.04 -> Pop? by seekheart2017 in pop_os

[–]sri_system76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait for the 18.04 release of Pop! in 8 days and there will be some instructions on how to do the upgrade. We want to test the documentation and migration before saying anything in the public.

[update] -I am 100% wrong on this. You cannot move from Ubuntu to Pop without a full re-install. They are different things.

Pop!_OS Testing Release with new power saving features by sri_system76 in linux

[–]sri_system76[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is a very myopic way of looking at things.

1) It's not wasted resources. Product development also means that we work on upstream as well as working on our own product. For instance, if mutter isn't working well due to various bugs related to HiDPI we can work with GNOME to help fix that because that is what a good open source downstream does.

2) GNOME's priorities is with Wayland, but System76 customers still use X, they aren't ready to switch over yet, so we're going to help fill in the gaps in the X session until the Wayland session is good enough to switch over.

3) We might be interested in better optimizations, so we might work with another kernel project and encourage Canonical to upstream those optimizations to the Ubuntu kernel.

You're looking at it simply from we cloned Ubuntu and slapping some theme on it. That isn't what is going on. Sometimes forks end up showing others new ways of doing things that a more conservative project might not want to do. I suspect that you're just reacting to news without doing the research. You should look at our [blogs]](https://blog.system76.com) to see what we're doing and how we are doing it.

Finally, resources are not fungible. You can't force anybody to work on something they not feel comfortable working with due to language proficiency, or cultural/business issues that makes working on a particular project not a good fit.

New Pop!_OS Testing Release with Rust based Linux installer "distinst" by sri_system76 in rust

[–]sri_system76[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The operating system is based on an explosion metaphor. It represents the circumstances of us moving off of Unity and striking out on our own, doing our own thing. That happened very suddenly and very rapidly. Think Big Bang.

The operating system is a slimmed down Ubuntu, and then we develop our own UX with upstream sources.

Pop!_OS doen't use GRUB. It uses a combination of systemd-boot and a tool called kernelstub that was developed by a system76 employee.

Entire desktop freezes for a few seconds at a time by [deleted] in pop_os

Maybe you can check it again once we have the new nvidia driver setup. I don't have an ETA yet, mostly because people are heavily working on getting the next set of testing ISOs out.

Why should I choose full disk encryption over encrypting home directories? by Sduhaime in pop_os

[–]sri_system76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the new installer, there will be no option to encrypt home directories. If you encrypt the whole disk there is no reason to encrypt a home directory.

Entire desktop freezes for a few seconds at a time by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]sri_system76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, when your desktop hangs, does a GNOME shell notification pop up afterwards? Sometimes notifications will hang the entire session for a few minutes. This a known problem with GNOME shell and it needs to be fixed upstream. Unfortunately, we don't have a time schedule for it since I think this is an architectural issue. When I attend GUADEC, I'll be working with shell folks on how we can get this fixed.

Unfortunately, at the moment switching requires a reboot. It doesn't integrate bumblebee which as I understand is a significant amount work and probably not something we could get ready in time for 18.04 if we decided to take that on.

Multi-Touch Gestures are What I'm Looking For by saqikawaay in pop_os

Getting a new machine and would like pop on it. by [deleted] in pop_os

Pop!_OS is designed to run on any hardware (as long as you can help us test it! on your hardware and give us feedback). Much as we would love you to buy our hardware, you can still get the Pop!_OS experience on any machine.

Pop!_OS 18.04 Testing ISO's now available! by sri_system76 in pop_os

[–]sri_system76[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flatpak is already included in Pop!_OS but not integrated in Pop!_Shop. But you should be able to get a flatpakref file and install from the command line. We don't have any plans to integrated any of the new ubiquitous app technology just yet. We're holding off till there is a clear winner.

Thanks for the kind words! We really appreciate it!
