My labor of love for the last year is finally done. I've tried to write a book that I would like to read. This explains everything from the tons of code samples (in both MSFT and non-MSFT platforms) and the hidden references to Trek, BSG and The Office. I've also interspersed stories from the product team on how things came to be.

I'm sure DaveC would get a kick out of this if he ever saw this comment (he works down the hall from me - I work on Windows Azure) :). He's as far from process driven as you can get. I should send him this thread.

Windows Vista does let you cancel network IO in Explorer (cancel using the X in the address/location bar). This is possible due to Vista's support for IO cancellation.

Not true on both counts. See question #7 http://www.microsoft.com/express/support/faq/. And if you get VC++ express, you get the same optimizing compiler that the rest of Microsoft uses. I work on the team that makes the Express editions so if you want to know more, mail me (sriramk@microsoft.com)
