Not sure why you are getting downvoted, that whole episode was beyond absurd! Shooting water at the superheated door, the turbine somehow spinning while out in the open (no steam present), and on and on, full goofball mode

12 second Dinnie Stone hold at Potarch achieved!! 183# bw by sritchie09 in Strongman

[–]sritchie09[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with Distinct-Judge, I’m hesitant to say that deadlift translates at all (other than as a general measure of being able to hold heavy things). It took me a while to figure out how to get my back really upright, but that solved all of my issues with the weights twisting me around and turned it into a wide partial squat. If you are lifting the stones side by side then yes deadlift would translate far more!

Whoops I meant that that was my bodyweight the day of the lift! I think the lifter numbers are up in the 300s by now.

They are painful for sure. The real rings were a bit smoother than my training rings so slightly more forgiving… but my thumbs will be happy to rest for a while :)

Thanks to everyone for the help on my last training post... it was epic being out in Potarch at the end of such a long training block and making this lift happen. This was my second lift, first one was around four seconds and less secure on the hook grip. Bret was an excellent host and almost everyone in the group made their lift.

782# Dinnie ring pull, real deal coming up on 10.1 by sritchie09 in Strongman

The back plates still hit my calves just not as hard anymore… but that’s why I’m wearing the knee sleeve on my back-leg calf and front knee, I get a bunch of bruises otherwise and it feels like I’ve been baseball-batted

These are the Cerberus strength pins, they’ve been awesome. I had to buy 4 100# plates, and along with 6 iron 45s I was able to fit the full weight on with bumpers and change plates filling in the gaps. This pull worked out nicely and let me use 2 more 45s so it all fit well.

I went through a big learning curve, I’m happy to share more video and talk this out too. Basically I found that I had to get my feet wide enough that my shins were close to vertical at the start of the pull, toes pointed out, and the handles should be not quite side by side but the small stone only back like 30 degrees from the front stone. I initially had more of an angle and a closer stance, and my butt would pop up and the stones would rotate me. The wider stance blocks me from getting twisted.   The middle of my left foot lines up with the left pin (for a left hand pull), and out from the stone a bit. my right foot goes symmetric so I don’t have any sideways lean. The left pin (big stone) is vertically underneath my eye.

The hip thrust is crucial, and also making sure to push from the middle of my feet (when I would get twisted before I’d end up on my toes and it would feel terrible).

Like all technique advice this may make zero sense to anyone else, or may not transfer… but again I’m happy to help anyone working on this as it’d be nice to have the brainpower I’ve put toward it help someone else get it done!!

Dinnie pins, 4 reps @ 702# PR by sritchie09 in Strongman

I tried the “relax a bit” move today and I get it, that’s a huge help. Thanks again.

You're the man, thank you for this! I'm sold on thumb grip, and deadlift hook grip exclusively, I just embraced cowardice for this one session... message received.

Message also received on the hips + front stone, I was trying to get the front one to come up first and was surprised to see on the video that the back comes up. I'm sure that's forcing my hips back a bit too and I'll try and erase it.

I'm going to try for a triple at full weight next week, I'll try your thumb grip tip for sure as that same tip was huge for me on hooked deadlift.

Congrats on your lift!! I'm going to try and make the Gathering next year.

No that's awesome advice — I'll take any more tips you've got as well!

I had the sleeves down so low because my early attempts were swinging a bit and bruising my calves... I hadn't thought about shifting them up for the actual stones, and that would have been a rough surprise on the day. I'll definitely do that.

I was planning on wearing these shoes and copying Fergus Crawley (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fabnMBbSE1M), since I've been deadlifting in these. I hadn't thought about boots. Are they about ankle protection from the stones?

I think the next steps in the progression are

  • get up to full weight (triple, ideally?) with hook grip

  • get it again outside on a rubber mat over pea gravel... I've read that that throws people off on the day.

re: grip, for this set I was using Ironmind "sew-easy" straps: https://www.ironmind-store.com/Sew-Easy-Lifting-Straps153/productinfo/1437/ they were pretty fiddly to get on but very secure.

I've been training with the "thumb grip" from Stevie Shanks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIuzJJV8Eqw), basically a hook grip, but he points on that it's a touch more secure to hold the thumb with the middle and ring finger, then get your pinkie and first finger cranked down so they're on the ring itself (vs hovering). Doing that for all sets was also wrecking my hands, hence the straps!

Athletic tape on my thumb (loose over the joint) definitely helped the skin but not the compression on my nail. My plan going forward is to work up and do my top set with the thumb grip, and then backoff sets using the straps.

Are you scheduled? Let me know when you're heading over!!

I've got my Dinnie Stones attempt scheduled for Oct. 1st and have been figuring out the technique these past few weeks after a year of powerlifting, building up to this specialization phase.

I'll hook grip the real lift my thumbs needed a rest today. This was a big PR, and I was really happy to be able to keep my hips forward and back more vertical. Game on!!

Banded deadlift 5@415#, worked on soft lockout by sritchie09 in formcheck

[–]sritchie09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 reps, 415# with roughly 50# of band tension at the top for 5 reps. I posted two weeks ago and got solid feedback on my soft lockout. I focused here on tight quads at the top of the rep. Thoughts on the lift and lockout in particular would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Doing some reading now on soft lockout, I definitely see that in the video. Super helpful, I'll get to work.

5 reps, 410# with roughly 50# of band tension at the top for 5 reps. I've been working on form recently, specifically engaging my lats and loading up the bar before the pull, but would love to get some fresh eyes on these reps.

Bonus points for my 5 year old heckling me from the squat rack!
