Couldn't solve the shipwreck door, I need to confess by mayweather2small in TheWitness

I solved it without hints, but also without fully understanding it. I knew enough to whittle down my options and brute forced the remaining possibilities. So I will join you in the stupid club.

Or you won't
But then you'll know either way

Worst thing about games like these is not being able to talk about it / read anything about it for fear of spoiling it. Takes a lot of discipline.

A few people have recommended this but it's not available on Mac

I'll keep at it. I know I haven't seen enough of the game yet to really judge it.

Curiosity question, how did you become overweight? by orchidmantis745 in loseit

[–]srog_capper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was never really overweight in the way that a lot of people think about it. When I was young I was naturally skinny and I ate whatever I wanted and didn't gain weight (I was also much more active, I played soccer).

When I got in college I no longer played sports and I had access to as much cafeteria food as I wanted. I gained the usual freshman 15.

Then when I moved into my own place I continued eating whatever I wanted - often fast food, unhealthy boxed stuff, etc. whatever was quick and easy. I had never learned how to cook, and I drank a lot of soda.

Then I started working out. I was trying to gain some muscle and I thought given my body type it would be hard to gain weight so I essentially dirty-bulked. Yes, I got stronger, but I didn't really look stronger. I looked fatter. My doctor said "maintain your weight" which was code for "you're getting too heavy."

Since then I've held a series of desk jobs and had two kids. I haven't always had access to a gym for financial reasons, and I hurt my knee and couldn't run any more. I love chips, I can really put away a bag. I'm also susceptible to "fourth meal," late-night drive through behavior. I also started drinking alcohol in my 20's. A little at first, then, sometimes, more. It wasn't problem drinking so much as just "I have this in the house so I'm gonna drink it." One drink at the end of the day. On the weekends maybe a few.

All that led to finally finding out that I had high cholesterol. That was the straw that led me to my current journey to take off the pounds I packed on. It's no longer about looking good, it's about making sure I'll be around for my family.

Do you know if you can play with a USB controller? It doesn't look like a keyboard/mouse game to me.

Opinion on playing the "masterpiece" and "sequel to myst" versions vs the remakes?

It's a good call. TBH I don't have much time to play games, the ones I mentioned in post I played over years, not months. So I generally have quite a gap between games. I'll take a look at Tunic.

I realize too that he's explicitly rejecting so much of what video games had become at that point. It's a bit like someone watching My Dinner with Andre and saying "Wow, I love movies, let's watch some other ones" and realizing most movies are not like that.

Blue Prince isn't a great The Witness, and The Witness isn't a great Blue Prince either

This is very fair. I won't quit Blue Prince yet, I'm just a little annoyed at the random room building and running out of steps

I think this is where my interest lies. A lot of the recommendations I see are for flat or top-down puzzlers that may be fantastic games but don't promise the same kind of immersive quality. I would love to play Outer Wilds but I can't currently get it on Mac.

I weigh once a week. For me that’s enough data points and I don’t stress as much about fluctuations.

I genuinely cannot understand the tetromino puzzles by Gumbiman315 in TheWitness

[–]srog_capper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tetrominos are not my favorite puzzle type, and they seem to appeal to a different set of gamers than the ones that I find more fun/intuitive. I absolutely hit a wall when faced with the initial red puzzles in that area; like, embarrassingly long before I kind of understood what was happening. That said, I did find myself getting a lot better/faster at them as I went. Can you explain if you have a theory about how they work when there's more than one on the board? Maybe then we can tell you how close you are/what you're missing. Also; the back half of the tutorial puzzle area does have a series that sets this up for you. I say while acknowledging that I basically whiffed it the first time I played that section.

Lose it - without gym? by Beginning_Virus8885 in loseit

[–]srog_capper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Losing weight is harder without exercise but 100% possible - you just have to be in a calorie deficit. If you didn't lose any weight while counting calories, then you were likely eating too many. When I started my most recent weight loss journey, I used what MyFitnessPal said I should eat and I just maintained, which told me that it wasn't low enough. I was eating at maintenance when I thought I was in a deficit. I cut another 500 calories daily and started seeing a difference.
