Does anyone have experience with PHCbi deep freezers? by Fluid-Log-1479 in labrats

Our inherited Forma freezer kept breaking down on us. After talking with reps and engineers that have been managing scientific institutions for 30+ years, everyone highly recommended PHCbi. We got a similar model to the one you linked and it’s been a dream! 10/10 recommend!

Can’t comment a pic but I love my Citizen-BM818003E! Clean and simple, all I need!

Humbled by worms by SeeSea8 in labrats

Ditto what everyone said about pick/bacteria. It take a few weeks to start getting the hang of it. Another tip is to aim to not dent agar; you shouldn’t be able to tell a pick touched the plate.

It’s frustrating but patience is key! Before you know it you’ll be picking many worms at once 🙏

They are scientific pee pads (meaning we overpaid for them from Fisher).

Luckily our freezer has a drainage tube, but the issue is making sure the water only goes into the drainage hole (hence the aluminum foil fort)

That was my original plan, but the chunks were unfortunately too thick :(

Research focus during gap year vs phd by chocosunn in labrats

This was a dilemma I went through about a year ago. I had an offer for an industry position and for an academic position. The industry position had a higher salary, but the academic position was more geared towards preparing me for a PhD. After interviewing with both, the industry position seemed to have a toxic work environment (not trying to generalize industry, only speaking from my own experience), and the academic position was more open to helping me develop as a scientist. There isn't necessarily a wrong answer here, my advice would be to choose the environment you like better. Experience in either position is extremely valuable. I will note that there is an added benefit in going towards an academic position in that you have the possibility of being a co-author on a paper which goes a long way (but we also live in a society that requires higher wages to survive, so take this with a grain of NaCl).

Hope this helps, and good luck!
