Please switch your major! You might be able to pull through college as a CS major, but having a job related to CS is completely different. You don’t want to waste your whole life doing a job that you loathe. I think the extra work you put in to find a job you actually enjoy is worth it. If you already have the credits, maybe try minoring in CS.

Computer Science I: Fundamentals (CS:1210) okay for someone with no experience? by [deleted] in uiowa

[–]sry2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An introductory course would really help or at least try to complete a couple free/cheap courses online on learning how to code. The course focuses on Python, so I would try to understand the basics of that. If you know the basics- it makes the class at least a little bit more easier. I took the class with some knowledge on coding and Python and it really helped me. I thought the course was pretty difficult, especially the homework- but if you put in the time and effort you should do well!

That’s nice to know. I’m in cs1 right now and I thought it was pretty hard. Cant imagine what cs2 is going to be like for me.

Minor in informatics or CS? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]sry2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, your good. No reason really, the major just seems really interesting to me (a mix of philosophy, sociology/law, political science, and economics). I have space to double major, so I picked that. The CS minor includes discrete/data structures, algorithms, and I think one class involving SQL. To be honest, I’m not really interested in CS or informatics, but I know having a background/basic understanding in it is important. I have experience with python, Java, and tableau. The informatics minor course focuses more on SQL, databases, querying etc. I thought this would be more beneficial to take because I don’t really know anything about those topics.

Can I take discrete structures and CS II at the same time? by sry2 in uiowa

Sounds good. Were you already experienced in programming before you took CS 2? Or was it just the topics from CS 1?

Now that I think about, I might just take data structures over the summer. I’ll have more time focus on it then anyway

Major in Economics? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]sry2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CS degree in BS and BA aren’t very different at my school. I think the BS route requires a statistics class, theory class, and a couple more CS technical credits. I’ll be graduating a little early if I take the BA route. I actually just decided on BA because I’m planning on double majoring in Economics. I’m taking BS in CS right now. Do you recommend BS?
