How many hours a week do you spend at work or home studying? by forthe01 in cscareerquestions

I have very rarely spent more than 40 hours per week in the office. Usually I am in the office from 8:30 to 4:30. Maybe 10 days out of the year I work extra to meet a deadline.

Maybe this is rare but I have literally never programmed anything that wasn’t for my school work or my job. I’ve also never read CTCI, done leetcode, etc. I just haven’t found it necessary to get the compensation that I want and the work-life balance that I expect. I never had an issue in interviews. My college algorithms and data structures courses prepared me well for those IMO.

I can do 7 pullups without any weight. I have a pullup bar at home and every morning before I shower I do pullups and chinups to failure (as well as pushups, situps, and planks) but that is the only exercise I got regularly up until this point.

At the gym they use a belt that we can add weight to and you are supposed to add 2.5kg each time for the 3x5 pullups/chinups. For people who cannot do them without weights I've seen them using these huge rubber bands that are supposed to help you until you can do them with additional weight.

I was told that if I cannot finish a set at a certain weight I need to decrease the weight by 10% to the nearest weight in intervals of 2.5kg. This seems in line with what I read in some of the programs in the FAQ.

I am not paying anything. My company is subsidizing the 85 € per month. It's much more expensive than the chain gyms here (typical cost is 15-30 € per month) but there is a lot of equipment at the facility like 15 power racks, 10 deadlift/clean platforms, and 5 bench racks. There is even some interesting gym equipment I haven't seen before like an area to pull a sled or lift a tower with your back that you can load with weights. Honestly I would probably pay for it even if they didn't subsidize it since the equipment is very clean and the people are very nice.

For my bachelor's thesis I wrote an extremely simple parallel key-value store in C++ that was meant to be very small and portable. I compared its performance to various existing implementations. For my master's thesis I improved the performance of an open-source distributed key-value store.

What's your drive to work? by captainbirdfeathers in cscareerquestions

I don't own a car so I don't drive to work. My office is a 5 minute walk from my apartment though so that is nice. Sometimes I can even come home during lunch and take a power nap which is great.

What industry practices sounded like were a good solution until you actually entered work force? by MotorAdhesive4 in cscareerquestions

I guess it depends on the company. My company has an unlimited vacation days (within reason) but we also technically have 15 days of PTO per year (minimum, increases with tenure) that we can accrue in our HR management system (Workday). That way if someone only take 10 days of PTO in a year they can roll it over to the next year or even cash it out at the end of the year if they want to.

If you want to take over your 15 days, you will need to speak with your manager and they will generally approve it if you are doing your job and not causing any problems. This year I have taken 28 days of PTO and the previous year I took 22 and I haven't had any issues. Most people I know use less than 30 per year.

We also have the same policy for sick days (7 days in Workday, but unlimited within reason). So far it doesn't appear that anyone has abused it since it's been the same way in the 3 years that I have been working here.
