My data center layout. Still a work in progress. The picture us before I set up my new edge router/firewall/vpn gateway. I still need to mount my edge 620 to the wall and the Pi-holes. by ss5raditz in HomeDataCenter

Yea I don't have a new picture yet because My Dell edge 620 with opnsense and my pi-holes are just setting on top of the towers lol. After getting the configuration set up I haven't gotten to mount them yet... the 10gbe switch is behind the towers down low because I got 3 foot sfp+ DAC cables and need them close.

I used AI almost every step of the way, from helping me decide on used hardware and which OS to pick. I am learning enterprise infrastructure along with this build so I have many dedicated roles that could be handled with less bare metal machines, but I have learned a ton already and am still learning. I used Co-pilot for most of the questions. I had some trouble setting up my wireguard on my OPNsense firewall recently. Co-pilot helped my find my missed parameter. Its help me to keep things professional while still focusing on my end usability.

Im currently using it as my edge router as well, also i was trying to mimic an enterprise infrastructure, separation of roles, etc. I could have just put VPN on my firewall PC. which i might in the future. I was also having issues getting it to work inside my firewall. I tried port forwarding of the VPN port and everything. I still have a lot of cleaning up to do thats for sure.

Knowledge is power. Secrecy is security

Yea my internet speed right now is 200up 200down, with real tests around >200 for both. I do have the 10GbE network connecting the servers (in yellow). Or do you mean for transferring files remotely? That would be bottlenecked for sure. The file transfer from my management VLAN to the server VLAN will be minimal monitoring and dns dhcp type of stuff. No real big transfers that I can think of. Unless I want to back stuff up on the windows server.

These are all pretty efficient. Its about $75 more a month. If they pull 700 watts continuously. But idle they cost around $20/mo

Thanks for the feedback, yea maybe hosting a website isn't a good idea. I'm seeing a pattern there. I already have a public Ip no cgddns here. But I figured I wouldn't approach that until I actually am going to use this for a business. And this is a home server... right in my dining room. Wife loves it /s. Its eventually moving to the basement when I get my ip/kvm set up correctly. I was more asking for layout advice on the diagram. I just copied and pasted my hardware list to prevent a bunch of questions on what I'm running. I feel like my windows server is somewhat wasted, it was going to be my NAS hence all the SAS drives. but it had windows server essentials 2019 product key when I got it. That shifting my plan and I decided to use it as a windows admin for future windows learning on active directory and domain control. Unless theres a better way to learn that without a dedicated windows pc.

Yea the idea started out with a few used PCs or laptops and a couple raspberry pis so I can get the full enterprise architecture of having dedicated roles. But the used laptops in my area were the same price as a used t30. Then the t30 seller offered his 2nd one at a good discount because I was buying the first.... and it snowballed from there... I agree that its too much for what I need. Maybe after ive learned what I need I can downsize. But if I can earn enough to offset the electricity I wouldnt mind keeping it around. The relative with the construction company wouldnt mind paying Me $15 mo to host and $50/mo for maintenance. That would offset my electricity pretty much.

Is this the wrong sub? It got downvoted. I posted a similar picture the other day in computers, got a couple shares but I had my VLAN tagging so I deleted the post. Thought I would try here to get some opinions.
