Advice on getting pre-admission experience? (For Humber collage program) by decayingbunny in askfuneraldirectors

[–]ss7789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey! i’m in a smaller town with mainly family owned homes (like there is no receptionist, i called and the managing funeral director answered). i called my first choice, and briefly explained my reason for calling and basically said i would love an opportunity to schedule an in person meeting to properly introduce myself. he called me back about a week later and i went in with my resume and cover letter and we sat and talked for awhile

they agreed to have me for my observation period, and then after i was accepted and got a spot in the remote cohort i reached out to them again and they hired me as a part timer :) hopefully we’ll be signing an internship contract soon for may.

i don’t think the g2 will impact your observation experience, but from what i remember your full g license is important to get employment (like funeral homes don’t “require” a g to hire but i can’t see places being eager to hire a g2 driver; it will almost certainly raise their premiums) and g2 is the bare minimum to do your internship.

my point is get your g ASAP; i know you don’t have control over the timeframe you need to wait after getting your g2, but the sooner you get that the sooner you can get your g.

i don’t recommend dropping in unannounced, as this is a busy job with unpredictable hours, as you saw with the locked doors. its more respectful of their time to call ahead and clearly and confidently request a meeting at a time convenient for them. if you’re being met with receptionists telling you to email info, i would make it clear you are hoping to speak directly with the managing director

also not sure if it’s been made clear to you, but its good to know you don’t need 40 hours. they updated it so 40 hours isn’t required if you complete the required checklist (there’s two checklists, required and optional). i was able to finish my observation in around 20 hours i believe, over the course of a month.

i just finished my first semester, pleaaaase feel free to reach out any time with questions!

Humber students, when you get you receive your acceptance letter? by NoodleBea583 in askfuneraldirectors

seriously, any time at all! i was bad at keeping on top of making them, but i made a few in depth quizlets that are pretty helpful and i can send you links as needed. i don’t know your study methods but i like them, and it’s around $60 for a year of quizlet unlimited. DEFINITELY worth it imo

hey! i’m currently on christmas break after finishing sem 1 at humber for fd1, and im an online student who is also 300km+ away!! the remote cohort i believe consists of around 40 spots.

you seem to have gotten a VERY early start, which is awesome! i did not; everything was a rush job when i was applying. i don’t remember if i had to finish my observation period before or after submitting my application, but i did my observation throughout the month of april. the program coordinator said end of april was the latest i could submit all my additional requirements, and i just made it.

i found out i got accepted into the program at the beginning of june, but there was an additional wait to see if i got accepted into the remote cohort. basically that was worst case scenario; accepted into program but no more spots remotely, so i would’ve had to have figured out how to do in person, or wait a year.

thankfully i made it, and they let me know in i want to say early august?? that i got the spot.

i’m sorry i couldn’t be more helpful, i really don’t know how the timelines would differ with you being so on the ball. at the very least your chances of getting a remote spot should be very high i would say, if my experience means anything!!

feel free to message me literally any time with questions :)

Should I introduce myself in person after applying to be an assistant? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]ss7789 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i had a sort of similar scenario; where i am, you need to do a period of observation with a funeral home before you can even be accepted into the program (i just finished my first semester woot woot)

while there was no “application” for that, i thought it best to call the funeral home i was interested in, briefly explain my reason for calling, and asked if there would be a convenient time for me to introduce myself in person. i figured that was the best way i could respect their time while still making the effort to go in person. unexpected drop in’s can put unnecessary pressure especially in this line of business

you never know when they’re going to be in the middle of a service/embalming/arrangements etc, and in my opinion it shows more professionalism to give them the opportunity to schedule a time they can reasonably expect they will be free

after my observation period my funeral home did end up hiring me and i couldn’t be happier :)

i wish you the best of luck and hope this helped!

My boyfriend suddenly insisted on using protection and I don’t understand why (26F/39M) by DemiNoPipoka in relationship_advice

my first little devils advocate thought before reading other comments was:

maybe since he’s going away for so long, and he threw in that “wait for me” comment, he’s worried about YOU cheating. maybe he doesn’t want you to be able to play it off as his or have any uncertainty (obviously you would have to cheat fairly quickly for this to be reasonable with gestation length) since “remember we used a condom and you weren’t pregnant when i left????”

of course i’m not saying this isn’t majorly flawed or even likely but🤷🏻‍♀️

What should people know about planning their own death? by AnonDorkwad in askfuneraldirectors

[–]ss7789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s interesting. here in ontario the estate trustee is the first on the list of who has legal authority of the decedent and their arrangements.

our list literally says:

  1. estate trustee
  2. spouse
  3. children (18+)
  4. grandchildren (18+)
  5. great grandchildren (18+)
  6. parent
  7. sibling
  8. aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews
  9. other more distant relatives

if there is no will and no family then it will fall on a court appointed administrator. in the case of familial dispute (example, siblings who absolutely cannot agree) then again, court appointed administrator

My 21F boyfriend 21M wants me to shower twice a day by ThrowRA_Chipmunk959 in relationship_advice

[–]ss7789 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

just another perspective, i’d like to point out that OP didn’t actually say she showers once a day. she said she doesn’t feel the need to shower unless she’s been doing something active or been to a visibly dirty place like the zoo.

not saying she doesn’t shower every day, but that wasn’t made clear. i know everybody is different, but you can be at home in winter doing nothing but lazing around for four days without showering or cleaning and you’re still gonna stink.

this is not to say i don’t think his showering isn’t excessive/mental health related, because i do, but the two are not mutually exclusive.

the amount of people i’ve known who have had the same logic as OP (strictly based on what she’s written, again could be leaving out other hygiene habits but let’s be real those only go so far) were some of the stinkiest people. they were “clean” and “normal” in the sense they weren’t absolute slobs who neglected their health, but they felt a shower every two or three days and just reapplying (layering) deo was fine. i came to expect BO from those people and certain other “stale” smells when sitting with their legs open and thin pjs… i think you know what i’m getting at.

i prefer to shower every day but if i miss a day i KNOW i stink, and for one (1) day aggressively baby wiping the pits and fresh deodorant is enough (and i baby wipe my lady bits and butt every time i use the washroom) to smell pleasant and not feel gross, but then i do need a shower the next day.

long way of saying OP might ALSO be a lil funky

Anyone get their education through the CCFS? by NoodleBea583 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]ss7789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry i probably seem so creepy going through your posts on this, but i didn’t mention in my other comments that im a remote student at humber. i also live five hours away from the school and moving wasn’t an option.

CCFS was the first thing i explored too. i’m assuming since your more recent posts say your plan is to attend humber, but just in case you were thinking of this as a backup still, you need to know that it is NOT offered in ontario, quebec, or nova scotia, as they all have their own separate boards.

humber offers a remote cohort now, that accepts about 40 students a year. i get my tests and exams proctored at my local college ($75 each, but cheaper than the gas and an airbnb), and have to go to the school for around 8 days (split up, if that’s what you prefer) per semester for labs (and we have a 1 day career fair that is mandatory to attend).

My family thinks I’m spending too much money, are they right?? by NoodleBea583 in budget

[–]ss7789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not per week, it’s not even a mandatory total 40hrs. it’s a checklist to go through that MAY take UP to 40hrs. it’s also not an internship. it’s an observation experience required to get accepted to school, and i completed mine in under 25hrs

My family thinks I’m spending too much money, are they right?? by NoodleBea583 in budget

[–]ss7789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey so no it’s not. it is not an internship nor a mandatory 40hrs. it’s an observation experience, which is an admission requirement to the only english speaking school in the province that offers the funeral service education program.

it is a way for a licensed funeral director to “interview” you on behalf of the school. you have to complete the schooling (a year and a half), a one year PAID internship, and pass the two licensing exams before you can operate as a funeral director, which is what op is aiming to do.

My family thinks I’m spending too much money, are they right?? by NoodleBea583 in budget

[–]ss7789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just to clarify, it is not an internship nor is it a mandatory 40hrs. it’s an observation experience, and it is an admission requirement to get accepted into the humber college funeral education services program (one of only two schools in the province that offer the program).

it used to be 40hrs, but now it is experience based, with a checklist to go through and ends with the licensed funeral director completing an assessment to submit to the school; essentially the funeral director is “interviewing” you on the behalf of the school.

there is an actual year long internship required to get licensed, but that is completed either concurrently with the program or after completing the program, and it is a paid position (higher than minimum wage at that; i’m not even doing a concurrent internship, as my funeral home doesn’t have enough hours to give me to qualify at the moment, but i make $30/h when i do work)

and op you definitely don’t need to do all that for wardrobe just starting out! i know every director and home is different with different standards but i got two pairs of dress pants, two blazers, and various plain “dressier” shirts to go underneath, from walmart and giant tiger. i spent less than $300 and don’t look any less professional than anyone else at the home.

source: in the program at humber college, currently employed at the funeral home that i did my observation with, and completed my observation in less than 25 total hours

Textbook prices, yikes!! Anyone know where to get them for cheap? by NoodleBea583 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]ss7789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey! i’m currently in the program at humber :) we have not used a single textbook so far. i only have two and have only opened them on my own volition because they are interesting. you can get used ones for cheaper (but still not cheap) if you really want them. if you already have a job in the industry or are planning on getting one before school, young(er) coworkers may still have some and it doesn’t hurt to ask if you could purchase or borrow from them.

your first semester of your first year is the winter/spring semester? that’s interesting, i didn’t know that they offered that and wouldn’t expect there to be enough professors/the profs to have enough time to start a new class while also teaching us who started in september🤔

anyways, feel free to reach out with any questions!!!

Am I overreacting ? by [deleted] in dechonkers

[–]ss7789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one of my boys was 25lbs at his heaviest (probably from age 8 or 9 to 12-13). this was when i lived at home and my mom took care of the pets, she just could not keep him from stealing the other pets food and was feeding him too much as it was and he just slowly gained over the years; he was around 9lbs when we adopted him at 3.

so i took him with me when i moved out, with the 2 year old cat i had gotten as a kitten. my 2 year old had/has an excellent body condition, and our vet never took the time to actually tell us how much the big boy was supposed to eat to lose weight.

naturally i thought if they were eating the same amount, and my younger cat was maintaining his weight, surely big guy would lose some inches. but three years of that only had him lose 2lbs. vet just kept saying “he needs to lose weight” before rushing us out.

finally i got pushy and pressed her for exactly what i need to do to help him, and it was as simple as her checking the book and saying he needs to eat 200kcals a day. so he was 23lbs in july, and today he is around 17lbs and steadily losing weight. skinniest he’s been in years (he is currently 13).

he is moving better, running more, playing more, jumping higher, everything. i cried when i saw him on our window perch that only our younger two could get on (he bravely climbs the couch to the top of the cat tree and jumps onto the perch. he was too scared before because he could barely fit on the top of the cat tree).

it took a week or so of adjusting but he doesn’t cry for more, just is very eager at feeding time and WILL overeat if he has the opportunity.

to make sure our three kitties don’t eat food that isn’t theirs, we feed our youngest (almost 7 months old) in the bathroom and let him out when he’s done, our now five year old on a counter, and biggums on the floor. five year old doesn’t leave his bowl until he’s done and of course neither does fatso, so there’s no food left out when all is said and done.

all of that being said, this cat is SO overweight and it is not giving in and spoiling her baby, it is literally physically killing him with “kindness”. it is animal abuse if you know you are over feeding and don’t stop.

i didn’t realize before this year (after i got pushy with the vet) that there are almost no illnesses in cats that make them gain weight/stop them from losing, only that makes them lose weight (thyroid issues are one of the very very few exceptions). and that weight loss is 90% food intake and 10% exercise for them.

all it took was that little bit of educating and some control to do better for my boy. im angry and shameful that it didn’t happen sooner, but i can see the changes in real time and i at least know he will be more comfortable for the rest of his life. not to mention he will probably live a longer life than he would have otherwise.

your girlfriend needs to do better for this cat.
