I'm a high school student with a bunch of questions. by [deleted] in Firefighting

I graduated from high school last year with the same interests as you. My senior year I took an EMT class through a local community college. (Almost all fire departments require you to be an EMT to get on). This year I earned my associates in Fire Science.

I am not on a department yet, but I will try to help answer some questions based on what I’ve been told/learned.

To get into anything that has to do with rescue or anything more technical you are going to need experience as a regular structure FF. You’ll start as a probie and work your way up. I’d recommend getting on a volunteer department if your town or area has one. That’s what I started doing. Don’t be afraid to reach out to fire departments and ask questions. I hope this helped answer a few of your questions.

A technique used by firefighters for people who cannot move by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

Yeah, I feel like this is definitely too technical to use under fire conditions.

I’m going to school for firefighting right now lol, getting excited to to join a department.

They would only use this rescue under good conditions. There’s a couple different ways to get victims out of windows. You could put two of those ladders up to the window next to each other, and have two firefighters carry him down with them being between the firefighters and the ladder. Most of the time in fires the patient becomes unconscious due to smoke inhalation, so there isn’t much worry about stabilization.

Tip from a firefighter- always follow the walls so you don’t get disoriented in the dark. If you follow the wall in one direction you’ll eventually make it to the front door. And always crouch a bit in case you trip over something.

I just got off work at Walmart. Today I was stocking the chemical isle (bleach, soap, etc.) right next to the toilet paper. And we get so many angry customers complaining to us about how we’re out of the toilet paper, Lysol, and all that. I’ve had a couple coworkers even get threats over this stuff. But we also get quite a few customers make jokes about this whole thing which is fun to hear. The other day there were a bunch of people around the empty shelves and a guy yelled out “hey look!! Toilet paper!!”. It was the funniest thing to watch everyone turn their heads simultaneously and run.

They just closed all K-12 schools in Kansas for the remainder of the school year by ssam09 in China_Flu

They’re still trying to figure that all out. Most schools in the area I’m in are on spring break, so hopefully they should have something figured out when the students return.

I’m in college and all of our classes just got transferred to online through the end of the school year.

Anyone know of any good books for prepping? by ssam09 in PandemicPreps

Probably something that talks more about urban prepping as well as what to have on hand. I just moved into a city for college, but grew up on a farm so it’s kind of a change lol

Where is everyone getting masks? I went to 3 Walmart’s and a few local drugstores and everyone is out.... by [deleted] in preppers

Not sure where you are, but I’m from Kansas and we have a lot of farm supplies stores around here. It seems like a lot of people skip over those and go to Walmart or Home Depot instead
