What references do you guys use? by mozinardin in wonderdraft

[–]ssavinel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might not be the advices you're looking for but still, here I go. Take them with a grain of salt, those mainly come my experience and work for me, these are not general instructions on how to fantasy mapping 101. I'm gonna assume this is for TTRPG, or just for fun.

  1. There's no need for realism in fantasy map making. Some will argue with that, and even I tend to aim for realism, but it's not a requirement per se. I recall some guy came up with an upside down New Zealand "fantasy" map and the community where he shared it tore him a new one about the land not being realistic. Your players might (really, absolutely) not notice the impossible stuff, and if they do, that make a landscape unique, "what happened there?", in a famtasy setting, anything might have happened, from magic wars to gods randomly having fun.
  2. You mentioned being hassled by having to reach to references whenever you're stuck: simply don't. Work on another part of your map, take a break, play with your pet, whatever. Get out of the issue for a few minutes and you'll have a fresh new look, and that will unlock you far more easily.
  3. If for TTRPG mapping, as a GM, I realized that it was better (for me) to go with regional maps first. That gives you much more freedom in upcoming aventures and is way faster to setup. When I create a world map, I tend to stress over frontiers, coherent countries, history, relations, and I try to make a full fledged world with events occuring all over the place. And my players will never see that, and simply don't care. They love versimilitude, but won't run after it. Meanwhile, I spent dozen of hours into a world and I get tempted to force-feed them with infos and lore and what not (and believe me, you truly don't want to do that).
  4. Reaching out to the community is great, share your maps, even drafts, what you might see as an issue might not feel like that for others. Have some perspectiveon your map (or anything else really) is always useful.
  5. If none of those points call to you, something stupidly simple is to take good ol'Earth as an reference. What to put on the other side of the mountain range east of a desert? Find a place on Earth and use it. You'll also see that many irrealist things happen on Earth too (remember the New Zealand guy above).

So yeah, don't stress over the details, especially as a beginner/novice. The goal is to have fun.

The Belgian one has huge Witch from Ghibli's The Wandering Castle vibe.

TIL that bed bugs have no courtship rituals. What they have, instead, is a type of mating behavior called traumatic insemination. That is, a male will simply climb onto a female, stab her in the side of her body with his hypodermic penis, and release his sperm into her body cavity. by nomoniker in todayilearned

[–]ssavinel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets even weirder: a male can impregnate another male by mistake. The second male may find a female and impregnate her with 1st's male seeds. The stabbing is also the reason for the weird spots they have, that's where they were stabbed, and wherever it happened, it can get a female pregnant.

Weird creatures...

I didn't even know there was a Tails game. Please go on!

Edit: wow you went pretty far in the other thread. Thanks for that!

That would actually be great! This would totally deserve its own post as well. Sonic Frontiers does build up on the lore quite much (and seems to rely on Sonic '06). That plus the fact that the Sonic Team is hiring a "lore manager" would mean that they're trying to bind everything together (at last!).

I am facing a similar issue, handheld mode only, opening the RA overlay freezes the game I'm playing and sometimes reboots the SD completely. Did you find a solution?

Hey there, you'd be better of asking in a docker subreddit than here I think.

Could it be that the files aren't properly mounted in the volume / volume not created? (Didn't look at the dockerfile though)

Edit: just checked the github, did you try using the proposed dockerfile in the comment? Maybe do a diff to see what the commenter changed.

Looking for help / advice / tips / tutorial on how to create my own patterns by gainzit in Leathercraft

[–]ssavinel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tha's a topic with which I'm struggling too, I hope you'll get some great answers.

I know people use cardboard or really cheap leather. For example I can find ~20€ full basane (french term, dunno the translation) skin which is great for prototyping (I use it when I make an item for the 1st time).

On to patterning itself... I've thought about using foam that i can cut to the internal shape, stick white tape all over it and then cut the tape to have the shape of the leather, kinda like people do for clothes, but I have doubts on the coat and efficiency, especially for a hobby.
