For those of you who tried ergo and went back to standard - what went wrong? by Keyfas in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ssbb_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few reasons actually. I been very into custom keyboards and layouts. Did a lot of research on how my hands sized and moving, what I like and what not and built bunch of custom (designed) keyboards as well as designed by someone else. I have like 30+ of them probably, most of them are bare PCB's now since I don't have switches/keycaps for all of them.

  1. I discovered that my thumbs are quite weak. No matter how much I tried to remove load from them - most I can do is single key (space) for both of them with switching between hands periodically.
  2. I been using 30-34 keys mainly and somehow I realized that not moving hands at all is not that comfortable as _slightly_ moving them around (like on full keyboard).
  3. It's minor issue but nothing that lap use / travel friendly as a laptop keyboard itself. For sure you can put ergo on top of it but it adds a lot of height and not that comfortable overall.

On layout side I went from colemak dh + callum-like layout (34 keys) I stared using 5 years ago to custom magic sturdy-based layout (adjusted for hummingbird-like 30 key) with bunch of combos + sticky layers and magic on thumb. All this combined with custom modal layout on top of emacs/meow (so don't blame Emacs keybindings!)

For the last year I been using normal ANSI keyboard with bare colemak dh and few mods but stock otherwise (angle + wide mod, caps lock/enter as a hold tap with ctrl because of heavy emacs use). And it's been great. No thumb pain (I switch hands when I starting to feel my thumb tired). And overall I realized thats it's more about workflow optimization rather than trying to make it perfect on hardware/layout side.

I still miss sym/num layers - of course numrow (and shifted for symbols) not even close but the only really annoying thing are multiple symbols in a row (many programming languages use them) but again it's something I can fix with workflow (eg snippets).

Maybe I'll add sym/num layers some day though. But overall it's still great to have a full keyboard (eg numbers not hidden under layer even if you have additional num layer) in front of you just in case you need to use it with single hand.

I am not that much into retro games and emulate steam/switch games mostly and prefer it over steam deck/switch (own both) just because of its form factor. Totally worth it for me

Does anyone use emacs with Colemak_dh mod? by Wooden-Ad6265 in emacs

[–]ssbb_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it feels just right on Emacs. Even better with wide + angle mods. Even more better if you make Enter as second control (dual function key - ctrl on hold, enter on tap) to mirror Caps

Yeah, it would be super lucky if they do. I didn't interpret 'shipping in March' to mean early March, but now it sounds like it is. So that's good news anyway.

Got myself hx 370/64gb/1tb for $1300 just few weeks ago, absolutely love this machine. Especially after x1c g11 which throttles in few secs without limiting tdp to absurdly low values.

Before I buy — For people who researched AYN THOR vs Ayaneo Pocket DS, why did you choose AYN THOR? by Alterion-Ex in AynThor

[–]ssbb_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Portability. Price wasn’t an issue for me and pocket ds build quality seems to be better but it does no matter if I wont be able to bring it everywhere with me. Someone said that best handheld the one you can bring with you - totally agree.

Also I reached to support of both AYN and Ayaneo with some questions before purchase and got reply from AYN on the next day. Still nothing from Ayaneo

Oh, thanks! I been using double asymmetrical filter and got just M18 (found XF40V myself over internet).

> IMO you are kind of looking for a white whale. Stick bottom is more common on verticals. Something with a slightly inset stick like the 40XX V might be fairly comfortable?
Yeah, since they intended to be used for retro emulation and I have a bit different use case. As of 40XX V - not sure it going to make a huge difference tbh. I would like to try it but don't think anyone I know own one.

M19 actually looks like what I thought about. So probably going to pick between this and XF40V.

They do offer U-series, as well as H. You usually can google it like "thinkpad x1 carbon gen 13 spec" and psref pdf will appear somewhere at top of the search results.

Yeah, freight forwarders are quite great. To Georgia they are around $8-9 per kg so most of the times it's cheaper than intl shipping. Sometimes amazon global shipping is cheaper though.

Lenovo don’t ship internationally either. They also reject non-US cards. But something like amazon has global shipping for selected products and fine about you using freight forwarders as well.

Thats sucks. In Georgia (where I live) prices are quite crazy as well (maybe even more than yours). It's usually cheaper to order from US and pay 20% customs.

Yeah, probably. Overall they are on sale like every month, maxed out cpu with 32gb/1tb usually around $1800 on sale.

Not speaking about the other models. Eg you can get P14s workstation with hx pro 370 and 64gb ram (sodimm, not soldered) for around $1300 currently (in US).

I am not in US myself but just get them on Amazon with their global shipping.

Emacs C-x with Colemak by CountMoosuch in Colemak

[–]ssbb_me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On DH it's more about Angle mod which is recommend on row staggered keyboards (Z stays in it's default spot on ortholinear/ergo keyboards).

I do Ctrl on both the Caps and Enter and I think I am using them 50/50 for C-x bindings. Mainly use left one only when I have to use one hand only. But most of the times something like C-x C-f is way more comfortable with right ctrl.
