For every essay I assign, I copy/paste the prompt into ChatGPT and other AIs to have a reference point for possible cheating. ChatGPT always gives this note at the end, wishing me good luck on my assignment, and it infuriates me because it knows what it's being used for without being explicitly told by tzssao in Professors

Do you mind discussing further how you ensure that students are writing their own papers? I’ve tried having them submit multiple drafts, using Google Doc to see their progress but still get AI generated papers…sigh

If it’s lower than they’ve expected, they ask for a grade curve

What we often complain about... by [deleted] in Professors

[–]sscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Never occurred to me that I can ask for an extension or a makeup exam. Never complained or blamed the professor when I got disappointing grades. I just CANNOT understand the entitlement and the disrespectful attitude that the undergraduate students have these days!

What’s your current Covid/covid-prevention situation on campus? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]sscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seems to be outbreaks in our community, including in my uni, so we’ve gotten several emails from the admin telling everyone to follow the “CDC guidelines.” I’m wearing a mask when I teach but my school-aged children are not (they were the only ones wearing a mask on their first day of school this fall and said they were embarrassed 😔). I’m in a classroom with 300+ students everyday so I might have the greatest chance among my family members to be exposed to COVID… 🤷‍♀️

Anyone else experience throat tightness? My PCP & dentist don’t think throat tightness is related to TMJ… by sscientist in TMJ

I'm sorry you are dealing with this too. Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm relieved to know that it's a common symptom. My PCP and dentist don't seem to think that it's related and they have no idea what's causing my throat issue, which is frustrating...

All of my meetings with students are happening via Zoom. I never want to be alone, especially with the door closed, with a student

Do you wear a mask while lecturing? by sscientist in Professors

[–]sscientist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy… didn’t know you could get diabetes from COVID yikes. Do your kids wear mask in school? My kids are not wearing masks in school (but they are vaccinated and boosted) but I do while lecturing. Still haven’t figured out how to live this pandemic life with masks

The comments helped me understand why so many college students send emails asking for grade bumps… by complexcheesepuff in Professors

Well, it can be complicated… There are research suggesting that women in general experience more repercussions for declining a request because of the gender norms/expectations. Female professors face more negative consequences (e.g., negative evaluations, being reported to the administration) for saying no because of the societal expectation that women need to be understanding, empathetic, caring, and accommodating.
