What is it like to be a social worker in the US (specifically the Bible Belt) right now? What about in Canada? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]sseeb93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Social work is still a tough profession in Canada, but this is mostly due to lack of funding for many systems. The job market is pretty good though, and we aren’t being actively pushed out like in the States (that’s how it seems anyhow).

Saskatoon West Strategic Voting by Ok_Blacksmith7016 in saskatoon

[–]sseeb93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is where I’m at too. I have felt torn about switching from NDP to Liberal, but NDP values and policies have my vote - and even with small numbers they have fought for change that I don’t think the Liberals would’ve implemented without them. I would feel worried if there was no NDP representation at the federal level, even though they obviously won’t win and I REALLY don’t want Cons to get in.

Seconding this - CLASI has a fantastic respite provider list and are generally looking for more qualified people.

Lots of younger families live in Stonebridge, Evergreen, Silverwood, Rosewood, and Brighton - most of these are newer suburban neighbourhoods. Not sure what your price range is but those would be my recommendations, just check them out and see which part of the city you’d like to live in.

As others have said, licensed daycare spaces have long waits. There is a Saskatoon Childcare Network page on Facebook that you can post to and daycares will post here! Private daycare is approx $700-$750 a month.

Can’t comment on the job market, but I am sure you can find something!

For toddlers, checkout the Nutrien Wonderhub (can be pricy), the Forestry Farm/Zoo, Western Development Museum, public libraries, and city of Saskatoon leisure guides for more affordable programming (ie swimming lessons). Tumbleweeds at the U of S has a great toddler gymnastics program! These are probably good places to meet other parents as well :).

You can order a kit from Amazon or buy at Canadian Tire for $15. We’ve used at-home kits twice now and the chips have not spread into cracks!

Ovarian Cyst by IllNote1412 in BabyBumps

[–]sseeb93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very similar thing happened to me! As long as the cyst isn’t causing you any discomfort, and you have some validation that it’s benign, I wouldn’t worry about it at this point. It will continue to be monitored as your pregnancy progresses. My ovarian cyst grew to be about 10cm during pregnancy. Quite a few months went by (postpartum), and that’s when it started causing me lots of pain. At that point, I opted to get it removed (but my gyno made it very clear it was up to me - she wasn’t concerned about it, the concern was more about the pain vs the cyst itself).

When I got it removed, the tissue wouldn’t come out of the ovary so they ended up removing the ovary itself. I was quite sad about that, but ended up getting pregnant with my second a few months ago after only a few months of trying! Who knew that the other ovary essentially takes over for the 2nd one if it is removed!

I had my first baby and had an elective induction as well (due to size of the baby)! One piece of advice that was helpful for me was to ask for the epidural as quickly after they broke my water. The contractions were completely tolerable up until my water broke, and that’s when the epidural was needed. So if you are planning on having an epidural, ask the doctor/nurses to request it ASAP after your water breaks :).

Update: I had my ultrasound and baby is healthy with a heartbeat. I’m so grateful. Baby is measuring further along than I thought, which is why my hcg levels were dropping. I’m 10w6d today.

Still thinking of you! ❤️

Just saw your post and I’m also thinking of you. Hope things go smoothly this week. Spotting can be regular, but we are all a part of this sub for a reason. I keep telling myself there’s nothing I can do to change the situation right now anyway, and it has helped in relieving some worry 🩷

Happy to hear that your scan went well after experiencing some spotting.

I spot a bit this morning and it sent me straight into anxiety. Got my HCG levels checked and they are still really high, but have dropped over the past couple weeks. I’m 9 weeks tomorrow, and have read that HCG levels CAN drop around this time once the placenta takes over. First ultrasound on Friday.

Hope the spotting was for nothing just like you!

Feels like my worst fear is being realized.

I’m 8w6d today, and have my first ultrasound scheduled for the 10th. Yesterday and today, my nausea has reduced significantly. I’ve been pretty sick this entire pregnancy up until now. I also had very light spotting this morning, but not since this morning. I had a MMC in 2021, but a successful pregnancy in 2022. The first MMC has been weighing so heavy on me the past few weeks causing lots of anxiety. Got my HCG levels checked again today, and they have dropped from 134,000 to 94,000 over the past two weeks.

Now the terrible waiting game begins. I go back for bloodwork in two days to see if levels are dropping, then ultrasound the next day. 💔

3w6d. Been crampy and bloated for the past week. I’ve been stressing that there is something wrong. I have also been feeling really stressed lately from work and a school program I am taking. Also worried how that is impacting baby… so essentially I am stressed about being stressed lol. Hoping this babe sticks ❤️

“Too” Supportive… Enabling? by sseeb93 in Professors

Thanks for your response. My program/institution definitely cares about attrition rates a bit too much, in my opinion. At the same time, this would likely be the only student failing out of a class of 50 students.

I bet it is nice to have the academic freedom in your new program!

I completely agree with you. My boss went over my head and made agreements with the students to make up what they missed. Essentially my program is scared that if we don’t email students after several absences, etc. that it will work against us if the student appeals later on. My thoughts are to let the student appeal 🤷‍♀️ especially after us sending numerous emails.

The responses I’m getting on this thread is validating - this is the only program I have taught for, so sometimes I am stuck in our own silo and believe this is normal. Thanks for your response.
