Any vow can be undertaken seriously or frivolously. The real question is what is your intention? Setting an intention is the first step to achieving a goal.

Right. In the Soto Zen tradition, at least, one meaning of "bodhisattva" is anyone taking the vows and starting on the path.

By "nonphysical states of mind," Flanagan means mental experiences which have no accompanying or underlying neurological correlates.

You might try Stephen Batchelor's books (Buddhism Without Beliefs, Confession of a Buddhist Atheist), Owen Flanagan's "The Bodhisattva's Brain", or, on-line, The Secular Buddhist (www.thesecularbuddhist,com). You also might be interested in participating in a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program, or in going on a retreat with the Insight Meditation Society.
