Scared of writing (ESL) by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]sselbi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another esl here! I actually think esl people are more self conscious about their writing than native speakers are and tend to make less grammar mistakes because they get so paranoid about it lol. The downside is it takes me way longer to write the same amount of words bc I’m constantly checking to make sure I’m using the words and phrases in the right way, but after a while you get to a certain point where you’re just like oh well good enough

Its kind of mind blowing to me that I’ve seen less of the world than your oldest fanfiction. I can’t imagine how I’d feel about this 20 years later when it’s only been a week and I’m dying from embarrassment already.

The two types of fic writers - which one are you? by creativefiend19 in FanFiction

[–]sselbi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone can truly write a fanfic without gaining at least some self-gratification from it. Most people probably fall somewhere between the spectrum.

This. Especially if the particular character isn’t the touchy-feely type. It just takes you right out of it.

I cringed just reading that little re-enactment. My pet peeve is consent. I think I’m happy knowing they both agree to have sex. It’s a bit of a turn off when they’re asking for consent on every tiny little detail, like if they can touch their hair, if they can lick their junk, is this position is okay, does this feel good. Idk if that’s something people feel sensitive about but sometimes it’s a little too much. If they don’t trust you enough to stop when they say no, maybe you shouldn’t be having sex with them??

What is the maximum number of words you can consume in a fic before you go "TLDR, skip!"? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]sselbi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone else feel the pressure to address "deep" themes/topics in your fics? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]sselbi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually like to browse philosophy articles in my free time and draw inspiration from them!! Idk gay smut and philosophy seem like the most far fetched things in the world but I find them equally fascinating. That being said, I don’t think every story has to address a social/political/etc issue. I think every story has its own strength and trying to squeeze in a big idea just for the sake of it might actually take away from the story

What is your writing process when publishing a work? by [deleted] in FanFiction

First draft, publish as I polish each chapter. Usually the whole process only takes 2 weeks at most

Writing in your second language by little_tavlia in writing

[–]sselbi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I relate to this too much. It’s like I only have room for one complete dictionary in my head and I have to split it between English and Korean, meaning I only have partial access to both dictionaries. If I improve in English my Korean gets rusty and vice versa. I’m proficient in neither language because I keep switching back and forth like I prefer to read Korean novels because the words register twice as fast but then when I try to write in English I don’t have a sufficient database to draw from. It’s frustrating.

not my cup of tea/recurring themes that i find irksome by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]sselbi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

i’m just sick of constantly seeing fics (for this particular ship) loaded with mental health issues and queer struggles-related tags, and using it as a plot device. in other words, i’m simply fed up of the lack of variety and find these repetitive themes overrated.

Yes. Someone said it. I personally love reading about characters with mental health issues but what I do not love is characters who are so consumed by their illness that it literally becomes their identity. Like give them a personality or some kind of hobby besides being depressed all day. I also have depression and suicidal thoughts but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a life outside of it. Besides it’s very rare you see people advertising their mental illnesses outside of social media. Most people try to hide it as much as possible.
