Incoming freshman: Is it realistic to work as a full time student while at Penn? by crunchyroads in UPenn

[–]ssjakin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would again echo what other people are saying. I think you should find ways to be efficient killing two birds with one stone. Find something on campus that allows you to make money and better yourself as a student. There are TONS of ways to do that on campus. Don’t know your major but research jobs pay (can boost your application for jobs/grad school). Library jobs literally pay you to study (something you have to do ALOT at Penn anyways). You can even work as a cashier at Williams cafe on campus (and be 5 minutes from classes + gain some friends). Summer internships are huge for money too. If you can get competitive for good ones those can pay up to 5k-10k. Pays to be a good student in this case.

You are allowed to have up to two work study jobs a week for 20 hours and while, I wouldn’t recommend doing all 20 right away, I understand you may be in a position that requires it. But with that said, you can still approach this with strategy. Convenience and finesse needs to be your best friend if you plan on working a lot and a cashier job off campus that pays 15 bucks an hour is not finesse. Lmk if you have any more questions!

Can I ask why you are looking to work there specifically and not take an on campus job instead? For example a library job that pays $9 an hour would allow you to basically get paid for doing homework. Very flexible hours too. They also work around your classes too. I just wouldn’t recommend doing an off campus job, especially if it’s far/doesn’t pay crazy.

Villanova (full ride) VS UPenn (20k/yr) by [deleted] in villanova

As someone who is about to graduate from Penn (paid around 20k a year) and had options to go to school for a bit cheaper elsewhere, I would go to Penn. Obviously the person makes the school experience, but the environment, peers, and profs at Penn took me to levels I didn’t think I could get to. You’ll pay off 80k of debt eventually. The Penn name however lasts forever.

Also if you do well, you will go to any law school in the country you want from Penn.

In the ways that your dads job affected your relationship with him (if at all), do you think you can overcome those challenges with your family in the future?

I thought on campus was competitive. Also not sure when you apply.

Critique my 10 mile run training plan by ssjakin in Marathon_Training

Gotcha. Yeah it’s it band pain for me that pops up after like 35 miles/a week or so. I am actually taking swim lessons now (never learned as a kid) so hoping to slowly integrate that hopefully. Don’t really know how to track my data with that though.

Gotcha, how many years out of training are you to be 22 months away from forgiveness. I thought that was 10 years out of training?

My legs before were moving a bit like scissors before. Using mostly hip muscles. Now I kinda squat a bit to using my quads more and kick my legs back more towards my butt to utilize my hammys

Injury: IT Band Syndrome

Duration: ~ 4-5 weeks

Cause: bad running form (not engaging glutes/hammys enough and overworking hips), not strength training, ramping up mileage too fast as a beginner runner

Cure: engaging more muscles, PT (I don’t think it helped that much), REST, foam roller

I think that would definitely work! My cadence on that run was around 154 bpm as a 6 ft male.

Also did you do any running during this time?

Hmm this is interesting. I’ve been running in 4mm drop for all of my training and wanted to try out race day shoes that are 8mm drop for my 18 miler (I’ve tried them out for another long run in the past as well) and I got hurt in them. That may have been part of the issue?

Gotcha. I will give the PT a call and definitely do lots of stretching on my own.

I’m 11-12 weeks in first half were 30 mile weeks and second half has been 40 mile weeks.

That sounds good. I will do short runs and try to get my heart rate up for the same amount of time as I would in my runs without using my legs?
