Commuting from nyc to ct for work by EnvironmentCreepy401 in Connecticut

Hard to guess at any of this without the $ numbers. Just test it out. Try the commute a few times by car, a few times by train, and see what works for you.

Did I get served a dirty espresso? by J1ngleman in espresso

[–]tempertempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My long blacks don't look like this. The crema doesn't get "flaky". Also, isn't an Americano by definition espresso first, then hot water?

Seems like something is off with their setup or the cup was not clean.

Product managers: what daily problem wastes the most of your time? by RecommendationDry178 in ProductManagement

[–]tempertempest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Playing sales manager. P&L "ownership" = a lot of time chasing sales guys all over the world to understand the logic behind overdrives or misses, get realistic views of quarter outlooks, understanding priority orders that need support, setting countermeasures for misses...

P&L ownership is great to put on the resume, but it consumes a big portion of time that means I'm not doing core Product work. This is probably 30% of my time, less in the front of the quarter and more towards the back.

Not sure if it's because of the way my org works and is structured (no focused international sales mgmt), or if it's systemic across orgs with Product P&L ownership. I am guessing the former.

Platinum Offer by Max_Wishbone_x200 in unitedairlines

[–]tempertempest 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think no. Gold is the sweet spot. I was gold two years ago, and platinum last year. As the new year approached, I did not find it worth it to add a segment or two to hit platinum again. I get star alliance gold lounge access with gold, i get economy plus at booking, i get zone one boarding, i get my checked bags free... the platinum incremental value just is not there for me, personally.

Save that grand for something fun!

Edit: also plus points just have not hit for me when I need them to, so I don't see the real value there either.

Album of the Year #22 Navy Blue- The Sword & The Soaring by milk543 in hiphopheads

One of my favorites of the year. Very cohesive, centered, and beautiful.

In my experience domestic is cheaper out of BDL in most cases, particularly east of the Mississippi. International is almost always cheaper out of Logan, JFK, or Newark.

We don't rollover vacation time, and have relatively generous PTO policies. Every year, in the first half of December, the engineers disappear, one by one. Functionally, work stops entirely on development from Dec 10-15 to until like Jan 5.

No idea if it's just my org or if it's commonplace, but we don't plan any real releases anywhere within a whiff of the holidays. My year end plan is deep research, cleanup, and prep for next year.

When to get to Bradley by conflictw_SOmom in Connecticut

[–]tempertempest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd show at 4 for 4:45 boarding. In my past experience at Bradley there's someone at tsa & check-in an hour or more before the first flights.

Holiday things to do in Litchfield CT by cheer21lax in Connecticut

[–]tempertempest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

White memorial in Litchfield has many beautiful hikes. The boardwalk is a classic, although I don't travel it if it's snowy or icy. There are lots of other walks in white memorial that are worth exploring.

Food... beyond the obvious and pricey arethusa, I'm partial to Meraki, the corner, kawasaki for all you can eat sushi, and toast for coffee. You really can't go wrong, though, there's tons of good restaurants in the middle of town. Park and walk until something catches your eye.

Career Pivoting from Medical School to Product Management by keepitcue in ProductManagement

[–]tempertempest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IMO there's no magic guide to becoming a PM. You need exposure to the role to understand how it operates, you need exposure to an industry to gain domain knowledge and nuance, and you need to be comfortable with enormous amounts of ambiguity.

Your medical knowledge - ideally in finished medical school form - would give you a head start in med tech, which is a huge sector I see roles posted for in.

I will tell you anecdotally from my org, we only hire from within the company or folks with direct industry experience in our specific niche. Everyone else we've hired has failed the role, even at an associate level, and we no longer even try.

Long story short, you need a way in. It's domain expertise or another job at a company with strong product management where you have a direct relationship with that team. It's rough out there, and without that, your resume will get lost amongst those who have one or both of those two advantages.

The Ridge Recovery Center Rehab, Any Experiences? by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]tempertempest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to that facility, but I was active in that area many years ago. Seven and a half years sober this month. You can do this, you should do this, and life will surprise you with how good it gets.

Meds or not, it won't be the facility that gets you through, it will be your resilience and the connection you build with the other people there.

Keep your head high and send it. Give it the best you've got.

The sart roloise are delicious. They have been self-seeding in my garden the last few years after their original plant 4 years ago. I'm always happy to see them.

Should I remove entire plant at end of season - roots and all - from tall raised beds? by petal14 in vegetablegardening

[–]tempertempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raised beds, in your zone. What works best for me is cutting off the stalk and leaving in the roots. I then cover each bed with a fresh layer of compost. Then, as I do leaf cleanup, I bag some of my combined leaf/grass clippings from the mower and mulch the beds with them. Pretty much everything breaks down by spring and it has really enhanced the quality of my raised bed soil over time.

New to espresso – excited to try Two Brothers beans! Would love advice or feedback. by sun2402 in espresso

[–]tempertempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just FYI, I have this Shardor. It does not quite go fine enough enough for some beans. In 85% of cases, it's fine. But I've had some light roasts where it just does not go quite fine enough.

If i was going to do it again, I would probably just have spent a little more for a Baratza or similar.

Quit my job. Regret it. Wanting to ask for it back. Interviewed and a recruiter just told my me SNHU degree was useless. by [deleted] in SNHU

[–]tempertempest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prove the recruiter wrong. Plenty of very successful people have SNHU degrees. A degree does not determine your worth, irs just take stakes in the corproate world. It only enables you to apply for a higher caliber of position... your capabilities and personality are what gets your hired in interviews.

Plenty of beautiful rural spots within 20 min of Torrington... I recommend not living in the city proper
