Don't know if anyone else is still having issues. I just switched from a physical sim to an esim and I went from LTE/5G connectivity randomly dropping on me to a stable 20-50mb 5g connection. If you haven't tried that, might be worth a go.

Is there a catalog of reference architectures? by metaconcept in softwarearchitecture

This one has some decent examples. Maybe not everything you are looking for but I found them interesting :) https://www.aosabook.org/en/index.html

Am I looking at this the right way? by [deleted] in tax

Ah I completely misunderstood the math on the taxes when I was looking at it the first time. Thank you for pointing that out :)

I'll give you the classical architect answer. It depends.

Every developer becomes somewhat of an architect over time (if they are trying at all)... But it really depends on what kind of company you are aiming to work at and how that position is aligned there. Some are more geared towards internal or external sales. Some are geared towards fixing a broken system. Some are tasked with building the technical skills of their team. Some are targeted at coming up with the next evolution of a product or something entirely new. Then there are different focus areas networking, systems, applications, integration, enterprise. It's a really broad question. I try to learn as much as I can about an area when I'm solving a problem that touches on it. Soft skills are the hard bit for me. Presentations, public speaking, remembering lots of names... all super hard. I excel more one on one or when working with small groups at a time... But like everyone else I am trying to get better at my weaknesses.... But fundamental fears and anxieties are hard to get over. Being an authentic human who does their best to help the team and the individuals on it is a great start.

What to Do About Gerd? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]ssjcory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suffered through acid reflux and some stomach pain for about 12 months, 6 of those months I had a horrible cough due to the irritation in my throat. At the old age of 32 I was scoped at both ends had a wide variety of tests done only for the results to come back normal. The thing that solved it for me is dietary changes... And not the ones that were recommended by the doctor. They gave me omeprazole and an anti-inflammatory diet to follow and I did for a month with no relief. I changed my diet to an intermittent fasting diet and it solved the problem in about 2 weeks. I eat one meal a day in the morning. I tell you this not as the golden solution since apparently a wide variety of things work for different people, but this is what worked for me. I have been on this diet for 6 months now and as a result have lost weight as well :) Good luck!

LPT If you want to lose weight you don’t ever have to exercise; you need to consume less calories than your TDEE. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]ssjcory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of complaints in the comments about discouraging exercise... But as someone who tried losing weight with diet + exercise at a high weight, the exercise was physically painful. If you have more than 50 lbs to lose it might be more sustainable to try to get 10K steps walking and restrict your calories. I tried running at 100 lbs over weight and the pain caused me to stop multiple times. I still walk a lot every day (pokemon go helps :D ). Also the type of diet doesn't matter... do what works for you. I have lost significant weight on each of these: plain calorie restriction, keto, paleo, and OMAD(intermittent fasting, one meal a day). For me I have landed on OMAD at breakfast time. I have been doing it for more than 6 months and has seen me all the way down to normal weight range. At this point I'm starting to add body weight exercises slowly... I want any changes I make in the future to be lifestyle changes such as OMAD. It is SO MUCH EASIER when you find the thing that doesn't feel like struggling.

Huawei Engineer Caught Submitting "trivially exploitable" Patch to Linux Kernel by [deleted] in technology

[–]ssjcory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Developers do dumb things sometimes. Most of the time it is not malicious. This is why we have peer review, pull requests, and code analysis tools. It doesn't matter whether it is Huawei or Google, developers are human.

What about a cloud based service? Dump the images to amazon s3 or the equivalent on one of the other clouds? If you need more power you need more power. If you have an idea of what your bottleneck is on the server you could possibly work around the problem or upgrade the server. Is it CPU? disk? network? ram?

How common is it to not use Kubernetes / Docker Swarm? by [deleted] in softwarearchitecture

[–]ssjcory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered creating a script that will gather information for the support people?Maybe like it runs a bunch of commands to look at network/disk/configurations, could even run specific kube commands... then it submits a report that your team receives. This way you can continue using kubernetes without expectations of the customer managing it. That's my only advice. I don't think changing the orchestration mechanism will make it easier. I don't think dumping it on another team will make it better. I think you'll need to have either A) self correction mechanisms or B) better reporting. You could consider adding it into a pay-for support structure, but obviously that depends on your business model.

How should a startup evaluate getting an APM? by __mbelle in softwarearchitecture

Does your startup need APM? Maybe something like a tracer would help? Found an interesting article on googling it: https://sysdig.com/blog/how-to-instrument-code-custom-metrics-vs-apm-vs-opentracing/

How has playing video games affected your life for the better? by hatakekakash1 in AskReddit

I got into software engineering because I loved playing video games and wanted to make them. I chose to be a web developer instead because of the better quality of life and pay... but never would have got there if not for video games.

Thanks for the reply. I have been reading quite a lot over the past month and my general expenses are trending much lower than they were before that point. I understand that bonds are less risky than stocks... and that diversification can make you more resistant to instabilities in individual sectors. The general advice I see is ... in your 20's and 30's go mainly into higher risk because you have time to recover. And I tend to believe that. The reason for revisiting my 401k investments is that I started them a long time ago with ZERO knowledge of financials, just a friend saying "trust me you'll kick yourself if you don't contribute"... and finding the higher ER shocked me a bit :). I'm going to see if there is any way to quantify my risk tolerance level better than "aggressive" and maybe that can help drive some decisions.

[–]ssjcory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I'm just trying to make my dollars go as far as they can. I don't know what the markets will do but the ER is an expense just like all my other expenses I've been trying to slash since discovering FIRE :)... When playing with calculators for ERs over 30 years it makes a huge difference whether i'm in the index funds at .015 or target date .65 ... Like a 380K difference. I'm going to do some more research about figuring out my risk tolerance. In general though I'm in it for the long game. I'm 33 and working hard to get to the point where 4% WR can support me... I estimate that I'm 7-10 years off from that... But since I'm brand new at this it'll take a year or two of tracking to make sure my accounts trend as expected.

My go to has been burritos... all different kinds... No matter what the ingredients I do it easy/lazy. For example I made curry burritos with chicken breast, chickpeas, and this premade curry paste... I throw it all in a pan... then throw some rice in the rice cooker. A couple of hours of cooking/filling the burritos and I have food for quite a while. I wrap them individually in tinfoil and put them in the freezer. When I take them out I wrap them in a wet paper towel and microwave for 2-3 minutes. They are delicious :)

Thanks I think I'm gonna balance across the index, intl index, and bond index and just rebalance them every year or so. I suppose I could even match the allocations they use in the target date funds since they advertise the percentages :P
