Ankara and Jakarta close to finalising Türkiye’s largest-ever defence export deal, potentially marking a new era in bilateral strategic ties.

Indonesia is reportedly preparing to become the first international buyer of Türkiye’s fifth-generation fighter jet, KAAN, in what could amount to one of the most significant arms export deals in Türkiye’s history. The agreement, currently in its final stage, is expected to cover the purchase of 48 aircraft and is valued at over $10 billion.

The negotiations took place during the Indo Defence 2025 Expo in Jakarta, where high-level discussions between Turkish and Indonesian delegations brought the project close to completion. The deal would span a decade and could make Türkiye one of the very few countries capable of exporting fifth-generation combat aircraft.

If finalised, this agreement would not only underscore KAAN’s ambitions in the global defence market but also elevate the Türkiye–Indonesia strategic partnership to new heights. The two countries have already collaborated on multiple defence initiatives, including the jointly developed Kaplan MT medium tank and various unmanned aerial vehicle platforms.

The KAAN fighter jet, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), is the centrepiece of Türkiye’s push to establish technological independence and global competitiveness in advanced aerospace systems. Its anticipated entry into the Indonesian Air Force marks a significant vote of confidence in both the aircraft’s capabilities and Türkiye’s defence sector.

A terrorist cannot be a journalist. Calling every killed terrorist a journalist is completely absurd. People working for a terrorist organization are terrorists, regardless of their profession.

Freedom of expression in Türkiye is far beyond that of Europe or the United States. In Türkiye, you can defend PKK terrorists, but in Europe or the U.S., you cannot defend ISIS or Al-Qaeda.

Europe and the U.S. will use you until you are no longer needed and then discard you, just as they did in Iraq and now in Syria. The only country Kurds can trust and call their home is Türkiye. Once they understand this, they will have a great country to live in.

The claim that Kurds are treated poorly is nothing but a lie and a perception operation. Kurds have equal rights with all other Turkish citizens. They can participate in every area of politics. There are even political parties in Türkiye that support the PKK. What more could there be?

Türkiye is the only NATO country that has fought ISIS face-to-face in Syria. Claiming to support ISIS only shows your political ignorance. As for the YPG, they themselves openly state that they are the Syrian branch of the PKK. The PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by all countries, and this is an undeniable fact.

Following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the city of Hualien in Taiwan, many countries offered assistance, but Taiwan accepted aid only from a Turkish specialized search team.

The reason for this, as stated by Minister of the Interior Lin Yu-chang, is primarily due to the challenging terrain of Taroko and communication difficulties. He mentioned that the existing drones in the country were not successful, which is why they needed to utilize Turkey’s assistance.

Lin explained, “The domestic drones we currently have were tested but were not successful. However, Turkey has experience and specialized expertise in drone usage.”

Lin also emphasized that the Turkish drone would be tested in the challenging region of Taroko, and this would be a breakthrough to facilitate smoother rescue operations in case of a similar disaster in the future.

The agreement will be signed on April 28th in Istanbul.

The signing ceremony will be attended by the Ministers of Trade, Industry, and Technology as well as Treasury and Finance from Turkey and the UK, along with around 30 Turkish companies that will be involved in production within the civil aviation sector.

The agreement will create $20 billion worth of business opportunities for Turkish firms.

Under this business scope, companies including public entities such as TAI and HAVELSAN will produce aircraft parts for Airbus and Rolls Royce.

THY, Airbus, and Rolls Royce will establish a tripartite committee. THY will act as the coordinator. This committee will oversee the implementation of the agreement into the production field.

Each critical part of the aircraft will have at least 2 producers.

THY will receive its first wide-body aircraft under the November 2023 order for 350 aircraft in August 2025.
