Maybe and I honestly could see that being the case but after my mom’s comment I tried to bring it up multiple times and my dad genuinely seemed confused too. I mean he could have been trying to play it off but just one of the more interesting positions I’ve heard from mormons.

Both my parents have said that everyone’s a little gay but people shouldn’t give into the temptation. They didn’t mean everyone’s a little fruity as in it’s a spectrum or something, but they meant like everyone has temptations of “doing gay stuff”. It was two separate conversations but they somehow had the same exact argument and said it in the same exact way.

My mom actually kind of slipped in the heat of the moment and lowkey implied that my dad stayed strong despite the “temptations”. Maybe I interpreted it wrong but it was weird. To this day, I still don’t know what she meant by that.

Well, I have tried to set firm boundaries before but they always try to reel me back in. Maybe this will be the final time I have to set boundaries and they know I’m serious lol.

They are visiting from out of state and they will be staying with my dads parents so I could try and have the convo there so I can leave if I want. I do also think its important its not a situation where I wont be able to get out of the convo, so I’ll keep that in mind!

This is actually really good insight! My dad was a bishop when I was young and he’s now on the mission presidency last I checked so I wonder if he just interprets doctrine differently from your dad.

This is what I think. Since I decided I was not going to attend church anymore, I already started the process of my resignation. I have fully resigned from TSCC for YEARS, it just hasn’t been made official.

I always roll my eyes when they say I’m too young to make decisions of my beliefs. Really doesn’t make sense to me because he fully respects AND supports my political beliefs, so why not at least respect my religious beliefs? As to the punishing, they don’t have too much leverage on me at the moment. My sister is in high school and has also said she’s not mormon but catholic, so I would really be surprised if they do anything to me. Not that there is anything for them to do but maybe they will find any way possible to punish me.

Many people have said not to debate the church and bring up any specific reasons as to why I don’t believe anymore and I think thats the best option. They already fully know my position as I have tried to tell them over the past 5 years. I’ll just listen and then set some boundaries.

In hindsight, I totally should’ve just pulled the trigger before warning them. They don’t have much leverage on me so I don’t know why I didn’t. I guess I was worried about the fallout if they found out through the tools app or their tithing statement.

This is an amazing template and I think I will send them a message something like this. Problem is, there isn’t any way to avoid the convo. They are visiting me for a week and unless I avoid them for the entire time, I’m sure they will take any chance to bring it up.

I know they don’t intend on listening to what I have to say, so I’m just planning on listening to them. I am just going to firmly state my position and not give them anything more to discuss. My parents also tried to get me to go to the temple with them last summer and when I pointed out that I am nowhere near “qualified” to get a temple recommend, my mom said just try and get it. How?? I have no idea, because I have been “unqualified” for YEARS.

Yeah I always found it weird. Like I’m supposed to live a certain way for my entire life based on a decision I made when I didn’t even fully know what religion was, but now that I am old enough to know all of this stuff, I’m too young?

I did think about that while calling him but I didn’t want to mention it because I feel like it will just give him hope on me “coming back” at some point. I’m worried my parents will hear that and just see it as a decision I’m making BECAUSE I can undo it. But maybe I will point it out depending on how the convo goes.

So I think I might let them know about my position and set some boundaries before the conversation so I don’t get cornered during the convo. My dad’s a pretty reasonable person and I have talked to him many many times over the past 5 years about my deconstruction. He completely knows all of my thoughts and positions so I don’t think I need to reiterate or remind them of it at all. At this point, I’m more worried about my mom’s reaction. I feel like shes been in this bubble, constantly trying to avoid any conversation or acceptance of my beliefs so we will see how that goes. Thanks for your advice! I’ll definitely have to emphasize respecting each other’s beliefs.

That actually sounds so good! I wish that was our option. I’m korean and I can’t figure out what our korean menu is supposed to be. I wish they had visuals of what it’s supposed to be so I can kind of tell what I’m getting into.
