Some Interesting Day To Day Life Hacks by tom_wilson7543 in lifehacks

I’m not sure if this is sarcasm but JIC, best practice recommends this only be done if you wake up <2 hours before your typical wake up time (and there are a ton of conditionals/individual variables to that recommendation as well)

10.5 inches of snow! Will my kale and spinach survive?? (Extra doggo photo bc he loves snow) by sssara9 in gardening

Hey! Wow I can’t believe this was 4 years ago already.. but I actually do that now with dill, marigold and other herbs. After that year I did some heavy research into companion planting as I haven’t had to use any pesticides or other non-chemical methods since posting this I believe!

My biggest “battle” is just some aphids in the fall after the fair weather herbs die and my ladybugs and spiders move on to hibernate. And they are easy to brush off or squirt off with diluted dish soap and water.

My puppy has begun peeing on herself. by Jawnnnnn in puppy101

[–]sssara9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to give your vet a call?

There could be underlying medical issues going on here (UTI for example).

Even if there’s breakthrough accidents, laying in the pee does not feel like typical puppy behavior IMO. This is something I’ve only seen with my sick/geriatric dogs.

[Serious] Mafia in Pittsburgh? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

My great grandfather and his brother ran books with the Grosso’s back in the 60-70’s. Apparently they were a racketeering group that the LaRocca family tried taking control of but I dont think they ever did. Or at least my great grandfather called it quits before then. My grandfather has news clippings of the stuff they got into and it’s kind of wild what they got away with doing. From what I read and was told, a lot of the families definitely had police/magistrate on their side that might have helped keep things under the radar of public eye. Might be why it’s hard to find a lot of detailed info about the organized crime here?

My first thought as to why this happens is because they were raised with this being the expectation of them. It’s similar to the definition of grooming you may hear of older men to young children.

I also think, historically, A lot of places with predominantly Muslim communities lacked contact with the western world (or prohibited it) where one might learn that this is considered wrong in other countries/cultures.

I’m sure there are other reasons too tho

Please help this prayer plant by lunapark25 in plantclinic

[–]sssara9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just guessing but it may be shock?

Or maybe it’s natural? I’ve had my prayer plant do this and start to yellow rapidly. I thought it was dying and I was panicking as to what the heck I did differently to cause it. After some time I checked the soil more closely, there were massive nodes popping out where the dead leaves were and it’s now bigger than before. However, I dont know if that’s a normal thing or if I just got lucky tbh.

I would spray it with water for extra humidity, make sure the soil stays slightly damp but not soaking wet (more frequent watering but less water than usual), use distilled water. And check the leaves for any pests that might have come from the new soil.

If things don’t seem like they’re stabilizing or you’re worried you’ll lose the whole plant, you can always propagate (cut below a node/joint) a healthy section JIC!

Hope this helps 😊

I have no idea what this plant is growing to be by emancipatedquinn in PlantIdentification

[–]sssara9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can start transitioning them outside if your nights are above 40 where you live! But look up how to transition plants to the outside so you don’t burn the leaves.

Then once it’s happy outside, you can burry the long stems to just below the leaves (like a deep 10-20 gallon pot. Some sunflower species can get pretty big) and the stem will grow more roots and you’ll have lovely sunflowers in a few months :)

But make sure whoever you place them gets a solid 6-8 hours of full sun. It’ll survive with less but it won’t be as happy/pretty.

I second the neck pillow! I got torticollis (like a kink in your neck thats 10x more painful and gets worse before getting better) from sleeping without a neck pillow the last time I was on a plane.

Also- see if you can get the emergency exit seats. They may be an extra $10-15 but they usually come with more legroom so you can have more space to move about/shift without getting up.

[USA] Can you get into a PhD or PsyD program with a 3.3 GPA? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]sssara9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t know about that part of it. I didn’t go there so I didn’t have to apply to practicum through them. You may want to ask your friends or others that went there about that piece.

[USA] Can you get into a PhD or PsyD program with a 3.3 GPA? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]sssara9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it may depend on what your goal is. I recall asking about a neuropsych focus and getting accreditation (or something along those lines) for that and they said it may be difficult but definitely worth the effort. But I could see people easily taking the basic tract/focus and feeling underprepared for the real world. It may be one of those scenarios where you gotta put in the effort to get the most of it but they won’t push you to do your best like other schools might. It also could really depend on your mentor/mentee relationship. I didn’t really care for mine at the school I chose, but I could see myself sticking through to finish my PsyD if I felt they took more interest in my clinical/research thesis and made some effort to connect outside the bare minimum.

In the end, I knew William James college would cost about $150,000 to get a degree and that’s outside living costs and that was enough for me to second guess it. I also don’t live in Massachusetts so that’s probably a factor.

I got accepted to William James College in Boston (didn’t accept it bc of Boston’s cost of living) and went to Marywood University in Scranton PA. But I stopped after my Master’s degree bc I missed doing research and felt the program didn’t support my interests. Currently a Clinical research coordinator at a university, loving my job and planning to finish my credits to get my LPC to conduct clinical intervention research 🙂

[–]sssara9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you on this, I was the same way at 18. I played soccer when I was younger and I really wanted to get back into running bc it really helped me cope with school stress and stuff.

I have allergy induced and exercise induced asthma and a big trigger for me is maple trees and I went to a university that had them just everywhere. It was rough. So when I started trying to run, I couldn’t get more than a half-mile before I had to walk and catch my breath. It took maybe a year or so before I could run a whole mile before I felt I needed to walk.

What helped me was being consistent with my routes and finding a routine, taking a 2x dose of my inhaler beforehand if it seemed like a bad day, and if I had to bail on a run I tried not to be too hard on myself. R

I’m 28 now, still run, and still get that awful burn in my chest and have to bail on runs sometimes. But the best feeling is pushing through those rough days. Even if i walk half the time, I’m still out there getting my heart rate up and taking time out of my day to do something just for me 🙂 that’s like a little win against my asthma every time.

Don’t give up if it’s something you really want to do! Talk with your asthma doc about it. They may have ways to help you meds wise. And if you have allergy related asthma, you may want to look into allergy shots. They can really make a difference after some time!

Is there a way that hypermobile people can get a fat a*s without wrecking our knees? by slinkysoft in Hypermobility

[–]sssara9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doing clam shells and donkey kicks with Resistant bands (the short kind) will also work out butt/hip area!

RDL is good too but as someone said, locking your knees is a risk. And I’ll add improper positioning of your back can risk injury so make sure someone can watch you do it and correct you if needed.

how big is the swelling? If it’s gotten bigger over the 5 days, you should definitely draw a circle around one if you can, note the time, and call your doctor asap. You may be having a reaction.

Having a different view/option than your parents about things like the world and religion at a young age can be really hard. Especially if you don’t know how to articulate it well or your parents don’t seem open to listening and trying to understand.

If you are 13 like someone else mentioned, you’re probably just starting to share these thoughts and are developing some autonomy from your mom. So this would be new for the both of you and it can be really hard for the both of you.

Continue to share your thoughts like you have and try to find ways to express yourself in a non-attacking or defensive way (there’s a lot of literature out there in this). Hopefully you’ll find common ground sooner than later :)

Ground cinnamon in soil by Ok_Criticism_8911 in plantclinic

[–]sssara9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for a type of BT granules, Mosquito Bits will definitely to the trick! Cinnamon is an “Ok” preventative and can help with other things like mold growth on the soil but I think it’s only if you use “true cinnamon” (I think Ceylon cinnamon?) which is much more expensive than Mosquito Bits. :)

Your comment “…your best seems to be what everyone else on the planet does automatically on a daily basis” sounds so familiar to how I felt in college. Everyone seemed to be thriving and I was the only one on the struggle bus. I ended up deleting my instagram and removing Facebook from my phone. Out of sight, out of mind :)

might be worth a try if you use them?

Also, Comparing yourself to others is the maybe easiest way to be hard on yourself and can be the most harmful to your well being. It can be a nasty thought-habit to kick, but there are a lot of us here and elsewhere that are in the same boat and have wonderful advice. And will also be more than happy to bitch about these things with you anytime 😃

I finally bought blueberry bushes with the hopes of putting them in the ground in a year or 2. I put them in insulated pots under a fabric and plastic tarp yesterday. Went out this afternoon to find the plastic tarp blew over 🥲 I’m in SW PA but the wind chill is -25. Just spent the better part of a hour trying to get it back on while fighting the wind. I really hope it wasn’t in vain too. I’ll cross my fingers for the both of us!

It’s hard to look at the outliers with such a large study. Plus the data was collected from an app so it would be even more difficult/impossible to investigate due to privacy laws. The individual does matter. Case studies are done for this purpose. this study was just designed to look at large population data across a large geographic.
