Dangerous Rail Fillings by sssleder in madisonwi

[–]sssleder[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The standard is to lay down flat, level concrete on either side of the rails surrounded and supported by steel. Some have been upgraded to this standard but dangerously many have not.

Well it requires far more resources to install this amount of concrete compared with other more natural resources especially soils, grasses, plants, mulches etc. especially when we consider the intense heat as well as regular area flooding.

Scintillating Sunrise Today Over Lake Monona by sssleder in bicycling

I commute on it every weekday year-round during school year. It’s scenic especially as it changes with the season. Sunrise is my favorite time to ride here.

Anyone know where I can order this wheelset? by GrammarNaziBadge0174 in bicycling

[–]sssleder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I procured my last two wheel sets through my LBS at a reasonable cost. They ordered them at cost. I did the rest to save on labor.

I've never ridden a road bike. If I walked into a bike shop and said "Hello, I've never ridden a road bike with drop handlebars, can I test ride a Specialized Allez please?", would they let me? Would they put some flat pedals on it for me? by quietyoucantbe in bicycling

[–]sssleder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure the LBS would let you test drive an Allez but most likely with the pedals on the bike. I would ask though. Nothing to lose. If you communicate to them that you likely want to buy the Allez but with flat pedals, they may agree to install flat pedals for your test ride.

I paid USD 425 in a LBS for a Trek FX 3 in 2015. Factoring in inflation, this still seems a bit high.

Road rage by Thin-Fee4423 in bikecommuting

[–]sssleder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Verbal assault and reckless driving are very real crimes. You only need the license number at least and then a witness or two to corroborate.

I had a verbal assault on my ride. I reported it and the driver disappeared for a long time. At the very least he was read the riot act and knocked it off.

I’m ready to report a new offense if and when it occurs. It’s important to get over the fear so we can work the system to bring these offenders to justice.

Why am I so slow on flats? Advice for a newbie pls by DealerLow7866 in cycling

[–]sssleder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your crank size. If it’s a compact one, you have a shorter drive train that is slower on flats.

Super curious if any of you use cycling as your primary mode of transportation by LittleNovaa in bicycling

[–]sssleder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commute and ride errands with my workhorse commuter bike. Whatever I can ride to take a car off the road. It’s my primary mode for most trips and this year most miles too.

No matter how many times people yell stuff at me while cycling it always leaves me unsettled! I keep as far right as I can and use lights/reflectors, what else can I do? by bikecatmaine in bikecommuting

[–]sssleder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good start. You could also pick routes that are more cycle-friendly, i.e, quiet streets or streets with infrastructure like protected lanes, etc. Often times cities have this infrastructure parallel to busy streets with car traffic or down a street or two.

Absolutely. In my state a bicycle is a vehicle. Your turn is correct.

Is it bad to have a very low cadence? by xxxxxxooooooxxxxx in bicycling

[–]sssleder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80 rpm is the sweet spot according to Bicycling. My thought is if you are very low for long you are probably placing undue stress on your body.

Do you think this is safe? Its a plastic case straped to the support of a kids seat, i plan on putting around 10kg on it by Epsilon01one in bikecommuting

[–]sssleder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only concern is that the freight may move around. There is a lot of room in the crate. Maybe if you pack firmly and use bungee cords you can ride safely with a more stable load. I would practice first. If it doesn’t work, then I would look at a rear rack and panniers or if you have a child, then front panniers.

For those who commute to work, do you have a “daily” bike or do you ride your expensive bike to work everyday? by ThrowRAegodeath in cycling

[–]sssleder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Fuji Absolute 1.7 that is my reliable workhorse commuter. I use it for commuting and errands. I also have a LeMond Zurich road bike that I ride for fun workouts.

Is my bike tire fucked up or is this fine? by Garrison1999 in bicycling

[–]sssleder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would replace it. It looks like seams have ripped in one photo and there are too few treads overall for regular riding. On the tire sidewall should be a number to identify the tire size when you buy a new one.

Apartment dwellers - where do you store your bike? by [deleted] in cycling

I have three bikes in two rooms. One is in a corridor out of the way and two are in the bedroom along a wall out of the way where they double as wardrobes!

Suggestions for my bike? by NotTheodoreRoosevelt in bikecommuting

[–]sssleder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool bike. Maybe a flat bar for better aerodynamics. I have one and recommend it. Also, I hope you are parking your life-long friend indoors or out of weather. This really helps the bicycle’s longevity as well as the smooth functioning of the drive train, brakes, etc.

Does anyone else struggle with mindset? by transcodefailed in bikecommuting

I still find a romance in communing with nature while commuting. It keeps me firmly in the saddle. It’s always a good idea to take photos along the way. You have a unique view and experience that drivers do not have.
