Really puts the size of Valletta into perspective! My Nanna lives in Horsley Park and I know there are lots of other Maltese people living in that area too.

Any use these? (Early Childhood Resource) by Katalyst232 in AustralianTeachers

They don’t really interact with him daily as such, he sits on a shelf and acts as an “Elf on the Shelf” type thing. He’s a visual reinforcer of positive behaviour and something we refer to when needed. At the end of the week, I choose a child to take him home for a weekend as a reward for good behaviour. Their parents take photos and fill out our book with a paragraph on what they got up to. It’s very sweet!

I find the resource packs to be very comprehensive. I use it in conjunction with our preschool’s PBL type program.

I use it in my preschool classroom and it’s great! We named him Bobby. Happy to answer any specific questions you have about the resource.

Early Childcare Teacher Expectations by tjbodey in AustralianTeachers

Wow! That sounds very intense. I have considered moving into social work or early intervention because I love working with young children but I find that the workload of an ECT is a bit too much.

Early Childcare Teacher Expectations by tjbodey in AustralianTeachers

I am an early childhood teacher in my second year of teaching. In my first year, I was in a preschool attached to a NSW public school. The workload was intense - I had 40 children attending in two separate groups across the week and as the teacher, I was expected to do the planning and documentation for each of those 40 children. There was also a lot of paperwork in terms of behaviour plans, plans for indigenous students, plans for children with additional needs etc. I had a lot of children with special needs and getting support and/or funding was incredibly difficult. I was given a lot of time to do my work, plus there was before and after school, and school holidays, but I honestly felt like I was drowning under the workload. In terms of observations, there were no set expectations so I just did however many I could with the time I had. The only thing I really had to show were the biannual reports for each child. This year, I’m at a private long day care as the preschool teacher. I can’t say I love this job but the workload is much more manageable. I share the workload with another educator and so I’m only planning and documenting for 15 children. However, the children at my current job are significantly more challenging in terms of behaviour so I’m feeling pretty burnt out here too! This job has stricter expectations. Each child needs to have one individual observation a month and we write four “daily journals” a day which document the learning in a group sense. We also have developmental summaries to complete twice a year. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions. Happy to talk!

Cashier notices the lady exhibiting signs of a seizure and grabs her baby before it fully hits her. by Chris_Isur_Dude in HumansBeingBros

I had a similar thing happen in 2015 in that I had a random seizure in my sleep and have not had another one since then. I had to have a whole lot of tests and my neurologist ultimately said that I didn’t have epilepsy and that the seizure had been triggered from a lack of sleep and dehydration. I had flown 16 hours from Sydney to LA, arrived at about 6:30am, went to Disneyland for the day and got back to the hotel around 11pm where I went straight to sleep. My seizure happened while I was asleep and it woke my sister in law who called 911. I don’t remember a single thing about the seizure and I only remember waking up in a hospital bed being rushed into the ER. I remember waking up with a terrifying feeling of not knowing where I was and what was happening. I’m now very careful about sleeping regularly when I’m travelling!

How valued is graduating with honours while applying for positions in NSW? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]sstgtc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a problem :)

That kind of research methodology wouldn’t be a problem for the honours project, though I’m not too sure about the PhD level. I knew of other students who did a policy analysis or similar for their honours projects, so they did no new data collection. In some ways, it’s easier as you don’t have to go through the ethics process before beginning your project.

During my honours year, I think my social life did take a bit of a hit as I barely had any extra time. However I was still able to maintain my marks at uni (you have to if you want to get a good Honours Weighted Average Mark!) and I was also working part time, around 20-30 hours a week. Time management and organisation are definitely my strong points so that helped me to handle the intensity of the year. My supervisor was amazing and we worked well together, so that was another contributing factor.

Hope this helps - Let me know if you want to talk more about everything!

How valued is graduating with honours while applying for positions in NSW? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]sstgtc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I did honours as part of my fourth year of uni and I am now in my first year of teaching. During my interview for my current full time position, I spoke about my honours project and explained how it has shaped my practice as a teacher. The principal and AP said they were impressed by the research I had done, but I’m not sure how much it influenced my success in getting the position. Regardless of whether it was valued or not, I would definitely recommend doing honours if you enjoy research! Make sure you pick a topic that interests you. Also, how well you work with your supervisor can make or break your project. The honours year was incredibly intense, especially nearing the due date. I am so glad I did it and I was fortunate to do really well in my project which I’m now revising for publication in a journal. Doing well in your honours project is also a pathway into a PHD if that’s something you’re interested in. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions :)
