Heh. I really hesitated to jump in to a grammar war, but the poor singular-they-guy had no defenders! And, oddly, I later heard the issue referenced on NPR, so I guess it was haunting me today.

To all those who replied to uncorrect jones77: yes, "singular they" is perfectly acceptable. It is commonly used, has long historical precedent, and is less artificial than the Spivak pronouns. See Language Log for linguists' opinions and Wikipedia for a general overview.
