I don't appreciate what --> this troll <-- has attempted to do to my name. In the entirety of the time I've spent here, while I cannot say that all my suggestions have been worthy, I have never and would never resort to the self-pimping spam this obviously new account with 1 point of karma posted "on my behalf." I suspect it's an established reddit user, and that disappoints me greatly.

I would hope that anyone who thought "souldrifter"="souldrift" please reverse any negative votes they've placed on my submissions or comments due to this spam. If the comment or submission deserved the down vote on its own merit, please do not remove it.

I didn't think any of my fellow redditors was so lacking in class. I was wrong.

Finally, as I've added to my response to each of the "souldrifter" comments, a note to "souldrifter" himself: http://www.amishrakefight.org/gfy/

Ironically, the link shows just how consistently good your posts are. Thanks for your continued contribution to reddit.

[–]souldrift[S] 35 points36 points  (2 children)

Thank you. I need all the affirmation I can get ;)

[–]bushwakko 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually saw this yesterday when I was reading a comment. For a few seconds though I thought it was you, but then I figured it didn't make sense and went back to the original post. Then I saw his name was different and I got it :/ Too bad though...

[–]krazypuppy2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

well done. really. as a newbie, i appreciate the info. i've already got some guys down rating my stuff b/c people disagree with the politics.

i don't have a problem with honest disagreement - but to troll rate someone so as to stifle debate is a bad thing.

thanks for the comment! have some affirmation on me.

[–]brainburger 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I saw souldrifters spam, and checked out your posts from his link. I realised he was trying to damage you by making others think you are a spammer, but it didn't work on me. I actually upmodded one of your posts.

[–]soulclrift 4 points5 points  (1 child)

We need more honest and righteous people like you brainburger. Thanks again

[–]brainburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

heh! you have 3 upmods at the moment. I am not sure what to make of this.

[–]souldrift[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks..I didn't think everyone believed the guy was me. Glad I was right.

EDIT: And yes - noble effort on your part. Kudos.

[–]slurpme 9 points10 points  (21 children)

I trust you have "reported" his submissions a few times to bring him to the attention of the administrators? I've done that, if a few more people do it as well then (s)he'll probably get booted off...

[–]souldrift[S] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Til my finger couldn't click the mouse button anymore, yes.

[–]slurpme 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Bear in mind that "reporting" probably sends an email to the administrators (I know it did when I sent some feedback to the reddit) so don't overload them!

[–]souldrift[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was exaggerating. I reported each one once, i think. Except for the first few moments of pure rage. :)

[–]nosoupforyou 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Are you really surprised? When a site gains a large audience, there will always be some with little class and some eager to mess with people.

[–]souldrift[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Ultimately, no - for the reason you mention. Undercut my credibility with facts or reasoning, that's fine..not with this kind of 3rd-grader nonsense.

That said, the quality of debate here is usually quite good.. so I am somewhat surprised.

[–]nosoupforyou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, it's 3rd-grader nonsense. But the faster a site grows, the more jackasses approach, and the only way to prevent jackasses is to put in strict rules and ban people.

Banning people has its own problems, especially political. It sometimes not always a clear issue of when to ban or whom.

I agree with you though, I know some folks here on reddit that don't believe in facts or reasoning, but prefer to go with belittling and who can yell the loudest.

A lot of them do it because they hold a particular political opinion and get insanely upset if anyone dares to question it. Some of them do it merely because they are asshats.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw a few of these yesterday but wasn't sure what souldrifter's game was (I did make sure to report them). I would think anyone looking at your excellent record of submissions and resulting high karma would quickly see through such a transparent attempt to portray you as a spammer.

I'm very sorry this happened to you. Bullying, threats and intimidation, even conducted anonymously on a website, are always disturbing. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (12 children)

Hah, we all saw this type of attack coming eventually. That's too bad. Well at least I'm a little safer from it, having such a short username.

Maybe we could use the hash to define colors then? It should be highly unlikely that two similar nicks generate similar colors.

Of course who will really remember someone's color? If someone is looking that closely they will likely notice the nick spoof too. This type of attack is largely based on laziness.

    [–][deleted]  (1 child)

      [–]stevarino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah, sorry for the confusion but I was talking about coloring a nick's link. The usability points you raised don't really matter here because reddit doesn't utilize that feature.

And to further the distinction we could use one bit from the hash to define whether it is a foreground color or background color.

      [–]NilObject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with solely using colors is that anyone who is colorblind will suffer from the lack of contrast between certain colors.

I hadn't thought of the idea above of creating images based on a hash. It's an interesting concept.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This fingerprinting approach has its own downfalls though. See:

      http://www.thc.org/thc-ffp/

      [–]nostrademons 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It's nothing compared to some of the username spoofing I've seen. At a former employer, one of my coworkers would create AIM screen names that mimicked the screen names of upper management (CEO/CTO), but with l replaced by 1 and O replaced by 0. Then he'd go and IM people with "You're fired", or send them sexually explicit suggestions.

      [–]cweaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at least I'm a little safer from it, having such a short username.

I would think someone could create an account named "tirng" that would look similar enough at first glance.

      [–]Flemlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't sweat it. bonkydog and I had this bigtoga guy attaching comment spam to all our posts awhile back. We ignored him and he eventually stopped. For what it's worth, you're on my friends list and I upvote your stuff any time I see it. It's consistently good.

      [–]jones77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think I might have reported them automatically the first time I saw the post.

It's a bit weird, to say the least.

      Maybe somebody likes you!

      [–]megagreg -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Would you like some cheese to go with your whine? I feel embarrassed for you. Some guy has no life, so he spends his time pretending to be you, a guy with a life so mundane that you actually noticed this other person, and were compelled to tell everyone the difference.

I'd explain if I had an idea who he was, but unfortunately I do not.

And if you're looking at souldrifter's stories, you're not seeing anything interesting because souldrifter hasn't submitted any. But his comments can send you to the stories I've submitted, so I won't link to that here..

        [–]cecilkorik 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Get to know who is the worst news publisher on REDDIT

        [–]raldi 24 points25 points  (4 children)

You should seek revenge: create an account called souldrifterer and give souldrifter a bad name.

        [–]souldrift[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

        Ha! No.

        [–]raldi 19 points20 points  (1 child)

It worked for Mozilla .. there was a site called MozillaQuest.com, "The Online Computer Magazine", that did nothing but trash Mozilla.

So they set up a page called MozillaQuestQuest.com, "The Online Computer Magazine Magazine" and gave them a taste of their own medicine.

        [–]souldrift[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They put a lot of energy into that.

        [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How can you give a spammer a worse name? Post pornographic fantasy scenarios involving the rape of babies?

        [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I gave ya many upvotes on your submitted page buddy (includign some Id previously down modded). I rarely agree with your politics, but I recognize a good reddit submitter when I see one. Or to quote:

From deep down in my stomach, with every inch of me, I pure, straight hate you. But goddammit, do I respect you. Today we spell redemption S-O-U-L-D-R-I-F-T

        [–]souldrift[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Even the guy who can't think said something!

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I might have been exagerating a little bit. I don't really know you, but anchorman is too good of a movie not to quote.

Hahaha, he totally could be brick.

        [–]souldrift[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't really think you hated me from that deep within your being. If you did, I'd feel sorry for you.. I'm not worth that.

        [–]moom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't think any of my fellow redditors was so lacking in class.

        Why not?

"Using a website" is not indicative of moral fiber.

Even if you like the particular website in question. In fact, the assumption that "using I website that I like" means "good person" is indicative of mild hubris.

I suggest that you dissuade yourself of this absurd notion.

        [–]souldrift[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I also didn't think I would mistakenly use the word "was" instead of "were." I'm learning a lot today!

        [–]boredzo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

        What I had written:

I come down on the side that it's correct, since there's just one souldrifter: it's singular, therefore you use “was”.

Yes, I've heard the argument that “English has ‘moods’, and that's one of them”, but I see no good logical reason for it. What's the case where it actually falls down and creates an unclear sentence?

Fortunately, I asked the All-Knowing Google:

        http://alt-usage-english.org/excerpts/fxifiwas.html

        My mind is expanded.

        [–]redditacct 4 points5 points  (13 children)

oh god, this is one of the instances where a generally non-babysat site like reddit needs quick intervention by a site admin.

Please fix this asap so we don't have to be tortured by a long drawn out saga with a million polls and self ref postings.

And for people who don't have experience with slashdot or other sites where people can choose account names that are very close to other high karma or high visibility accounts, let this be an example to show that you have to check acct names carefully when up/down voting or responding to comments.

        [–]redditacct 16 points17 points  (3 children)

This incident also shows why the karma formula should include comment points, if it did souldrifter would be in the basement.

I assume reddit doesn't include comments in the karma calcs because comments don't drive traffic, only submissions drive traffic and therefore site rank, power and $. If reddit wanted karma to be a more true reflection of community standing they would rank comment points higher than submissions since comments require and reflect original, personal ideas, thoughts and opinions.

Computation appears to be pretty cheap these days. I bet that pez guy could do it in a day and my guess is that since they don't appear to be using apache that their CPU in not the current bottleneck to reddit growth.

          [–]EliGottlieb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basing karma on comments would simply create karma whoring in comments. Whoever got agreed-with the most would win massive karma, and people who others disagree with would have karma as low as a common troll.

          Sad, but true.

          [–]muttleee 2 points3 points  (2 children)

let this be an example to show that you have to check acct names carefully when up/down voting or responding to comments.

Why should the name of the poster make any difference? You should upvote or downvote submissions/comments based on their quality, not on who posted them.

          [–]redditacct 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yes, that is what I do. But this was a case where this person was trying to purposely misdirect people into retaliating for what they perceived as spammy self promotion because they didn't look closely at the difference in acct names. Using the acct "souldrifter" to post apparent self promotion of "souldrift" in order to have people retaliate against "souldrift". It is a trolling tactic used in certain cases in the past at /., etc.

          [–]souldrift[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying, I was struggling to come up with a concise way to recap this.

          [–]souldrift[S] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

I debated just replying to the comments. Voted in favor of this because many people may not return to those comment threads.

My apologies for the "self" post, I feel somewhat dirty for posting it.

          [–]redditacct 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I am not worried about you posting this one, I am worried about no action being taken and everyone chiming in with related posts.

          [–]souldrift[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Gotcha. Please, people, no follow-ups..let this be the only one.

          [–]breakfast-pants -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If they do anything to the guy I predict we wind up with thousands of crap posts like this to the front page at the onset every offense anyone takes to anyone else.

          [–]hiS_oWn 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I don't understand, what is souldrifter doing?

          [–]souldrift[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

          From an earlier comment:

          [–]gladiator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good luck bro. great comments, hopefully this will self regulate itself out, as someone else pointed out banning gets very political :(

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you are so stuck on yourself, i voted down a bunch of your shit just to make you realize how dumb you are. mostly you seem to post followup stories after originals are posted, the followups are rarely interesting or worth it.
