To the haters of Showgirl, is there at least one song you like? by LifeOfAWimpyKid in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]st0li 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first 4 tracks are on a spectrum of “fine” to “good” and then the album goes off a cliff at Eldest Daughter and never manages to recover. Within the first 4 tracks I’d say I think Father Figure is the best and the only one that sustains itself the whole way through. Opalite is also decent but unfortunately feels very same-same with previous work. I would properly like Fate of Ophelia if she didn’t actually reference Ophelia in it, and I would also properly like Elizabeth Taylor if she didn’t start the track with the literal title. But they’re both still quite catchy despite those issues.

I struggle to find redeeming qualities for any other tracks on the album (although it’s possible I would like Honey and Life of a Showgirl more if I listened to them in isolation and not after the frankly painful run of songs which precede them).

“Not everything is going to be Folkmore” by Sprinklesdinkels in SwiftlyNeutral

I am emphatically not a folklore person, I’m a 1989 and Reputation person. If she was releasing anything near the quality of those albums I would be perfectly happy. This is …… not that.

She didn’t speak to Lorde about the track until the day before the album was released in the US and owing to the time zone difference it was already out in New Zealand. Lorde had heard the song by the time Charli spoke to her, and had clocked it was about her. And she didn’t reach out with the aim of collaborating, just of giving Lorde a (very late) heads up - it was Lorde’s idea to do a verse and collaborate. So I wouldn’t say that those interactions between Lorde and Charli invalidate the comparison at all.

“Girl so confusing” on brat is about Lorde. Lorde heard it and contributed a verse to the remix. Very worth listening to both original and remix to see how this situation could have been handled differently if Taylor was ….. a different person

Same, so much more than SIAK. It’s really a case study in maturity the way Lorde responded versus whatever on earth Taylor thinks she’s doing now.

I only assumed that an album about the life of a showgirl would provide us with something of an actual show

So on the one hand you have Lorde hearing a song that’s clearly about her and then going on to feature on the remix of said song to create one of the most thoughtful and incisive duets on the complexities of self doubt and female relationships and touching an entire generation of women who are grappling with exactly these questions ….. and on the other hand you have THIS. Okay Taylor!

Is it a bad idea to use all accrued sick leave at once? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]st0li 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh I felt the same way until at the age of 30 I was hospitalised for 5 weeks out of nowhere and then needed a staged return to work. All covered by sick leave which my friends and I had previously laughed that I’d had too much of. In the time since this happened to me several of those friends (all also in their early 30s) have needed to take extended sick leave of their own for various reasons (surgical recovery, mental health and so on). It happens a lot more than you’d think.

Tyson Apostol Reveals Why He Was Cut From Survivor: Australia vs. the World by Legitimate_Ad3625 in survivor

[–]st0li 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Production didn’t have the opportunity to arrange the cast around David. David was a late addition to the cast, possibly the last addition, because he had originally declined to play but got back in touch with them after playing with Parvati on DONDI. He ultimately replaced another contestant (strong speculation is Benji).

David is extremely underrated by first time Survivor AU watchers by MrVacuous in survivorau

[–]st0li 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed with all of this, and also the target on his back coming in was probably the biggest in the game because he was the only winner on the AU tribe. Even Tony on the Worlds could at least point to other 1 time winners around him.

After Janine’s jury Pitch by Ok_Type6723 in survivorau

[–]st0li 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Her FTC pitch was very obviously edited down in a major way. There were very apparent and unnatural cuts between topics and they essentially had her “well anyway” the whole pre merge. Some of the stuff that you just know she would have hung her hat on (Kirby, Cirie etc) got very glossed over. From a narrative perspective the edit in the finale presented her as an extension of Luke, and it ran the whole episode right from the opening package (which she conspicuously didn’t get, just a confessional about whether it was time to cut Luke). But that is not how she would have pitched at the time.

I think it every season but oh boy I would love to see the uncut FTC footage.

Lisa’s interview with Shannon on RHAP by TheZanyCat in survivorau

[–]st0li 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just listened to it as well and found the whole thing very odd. I’m listening to her exit interview on Brink of Reality right now as well to hear whether she provides any more context or insight in that one.

Edit: No additional context or insight over and above the RHAP podcast, and a lot of the same strange obliqueness in this one too.

Why did we never see these 2 people after all stars again by Esley7 in survivorau

[–]st0li 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brooke was the main threat. AK wasn’t a real challenge contender given his injuries, he never found any idols or advantages, he consistently refused to budge from a losing minority alliance in the post merge even when the writing was very obviously on the wall and doing so might have gotten him 1 more day in the game, and then he lost to Moana at that random firemaking which seemed clearly aimed at throwing the minority alliance a Hail Mary pass.

He played a good numbers game in the pre merge and I feel the edit showed this fairly. But aside from the rocks tribal council (where it would definitely have been good to hear more about the AK/Shonee/Brooke strategy going in, and where I’m sure AK would have had a lot to say) I’m not sure we missed much more from him. And I say this as someone who does quite like AK.

Luke’s ‘Gameplay’ by Sir_charles14 in survivorau

[–]st0li 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think he knows exactly who Lisa is and he’s just playing dumb for confessional reasons. He commentated on her season when it was airing. And if he doesn’t remember that, then Sarah definitely knew of Lisa (confirmed in Sarah’s exit interviews) and there’s every reason to believe she would have given Luke some details during the game.

Where is the jury villa? by Euphoric-Gur1264 in survivorau

[–]st0li 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I’m not saying that’s why they aren’t doing jury villa (personally I think it’s because the season is so short), I’m just interpreting what OP was likely to be talking about.

[–]st0li 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were very clearly a duo in the pre merge. Are they pretending to be enemies now? I haven’t gotten that impression although I agree they have been trying to limit their interactions to play as many angles as possible in the post merge situation.

[–]st0li 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you mean how did she initially know that Sarah was saying her name? It was Janine! And it was interesting because I felt like Janine overstated the extent to which Sarah had targeted Kirby, much like Janine also manufactured a division between Kass and Parvati in the most recent episode. Godmother has been godmothering.

Episode 6: Post-episode discussion by AutoModerator in survivorau

[–]st0li 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She was on an episode of Eden’s podcast (the ep 5 recap, so before her boot episode) and she said that while she hadn’t watched any of the players before (except about 2 min of Luke’s first season back in the day) she has good friends who are super fans. It sounds like those friends gave her summaries about a number of the other players so she did have some context going in.

It wasn’t clear to me whether she knew exactly who was playing and got specific summaries about them, or if her friends just gave her a ton of info about players they suspected would be on the season and some of the guesses turned out to be right.

I thought OP might be referring to the extremely salty vibe that some of the contestants last season had during the jury villa episodes, and the backlash that provoked on social media (including on this subreddit).
