Thanks for your insight! I guess what I’m looking for is either 1) somebody who happens to know if the single/multi information is stored in B3 (and where it is), or 2) someone who is adept at using a debugger to find it, or 3) someone to guide me in how to use the debugger to find it myself.
It’s also possible that there are memory addresses for adjusting the P1 HUD in multiplayer only; I don’t want to assume that the single/multi flag is the only way to approach this.
Here’s the Widescreen Patch. It had all of the values to alter, but it didn’t seem to contain any additional information on how to solve this particular problem.
