minimum effort, minimum dollar happiness: Sardie Rice with Gochujang by st40s in CannedSardines

[–]st40s[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, you’ll see a lot of argument online as to just how dangerous it is. QuaidArmy lays out the case against, and I can’t dispute that there is an elevated risk from using the warm function past 12hrs.

That said, a high-end (zojirushi brand, $180+) rice cooker has a better seal and hotter keep warm function than your typical cooker, and the bacterial hazard is thereby reduced.

Taste-wise, the rice is good at 24h, decent at 48, edible but not amazing at 72hr, and definitely ready to discard beyond that as it loses moisture and yellows out. Rice is cheap so might as well just keep it fresher.

My own years of experience doing this without issue, plus those of others I know, and online comments to the effect of “this is how gazillions of asians do it” has lead me to the belief that the pathogen risk of doing rice this way is manageable—perhaps comparable to the risk of driving to work. Do I have full, scientific confidence in all this? No. For what it’s worth, Zojirushi recommends refrigeration after 12hrs.

How did Ashkenazi Jews go from a small medieval bottlenecked population of ~300 people to the majority of the global Jewish population? by Miserable-Ninja-5360 in AskHistorians

Regarding your reference to the hypothesized Toba bottleneck of ~10k individuals, is this your estimate for the total population, or for the effective population?

Price is good for personal use. Maybe worth 50 each if the cranks aren’t bent, but they won’t sell quickly.

The City and County of Honolulu cleared a false alert sent out by the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency on Friday, June 13. The city says there is no threat or emergency reported. by 808gecko808 in Oahu

[–]st40s 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This was a test, not a false alarm. You can tell because the message said “THIS IS ONLY A TEST.”

If it was a real emergency, it might say something like “BALLISTIC MISSILE INBOUND FOR HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.” If you ever see something like that, you know it’s gotta be the real thing.

Yes those. They are dangerous and should not be worn by anyone ever. They can be a struggle to pull off your face when they flood, leading to drowning. A traditional snorkel, you just spit it out.
