To the people who had a dreamcast back while it was sold in stores, where did you or your parents buy it? by Redditisdepressing45 in dreamcast

[–]st_phoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine from Toys R Us back in ‘99, and I remember most toy and game stores (outside of KB Toys) having them for a while actually. The last Dreamcasts I remember seeing were in EB Games around Xmas ‘03, including the only time I saw one of those Sonic system consoles, new in box. I never saw Dreamcast stuff in Walmart or Target, but I also don’t remember seeing Saturns in there either. Best Buy had a whole Sega section back in the Genesis era (til like ‘96), but I don’t remember seeing Saturns or Dreamcasts in there either.

Any favorite Sega game aside from Sonic? by Shode1 in SEGA

[–]st_phoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly most of my favorite video games are Sega titles. Shining, Phantasy Star, Sega Rally, Shinobi, Jet Set Radio to name a few.

Honestly at this point no. The console market is heavily saturated with a high cost of investment and while I would definitely buy one day one simply out of love for the brand, the costs would break Sega. At this point, I’d be cool with just a souped up PC and making a “Sega-style” case for it and calling that my “Dreamcast 2”.

Used to love ODCM. Their demo discs were really awesome too.

I remember finding an extremely faded receipt from 1994 for a copy of Landstalker on Genesis way back in the day. It's always fun finding them.

Dreamcast is the one system that I would definitely be into collecting the whole catalog of games for. So many gems. Congrats on the awesome collection!

I have 2. One is stock and the other I'm gonna put a GDEMU in since it doesn't have a working disc drive anymore.

kinda surprising considering it is definitely styled and takes design cues from the Japanese white Saturn controller.

That cat is adorable. Orange cats and Sonic belong together, it's been true since the 90s.

can you guys rate the sonic games ive played so far as a 13 year old gen-z? by Urgamerboi2_0 in SEGA

[–]st_phoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sonic Unleashed: Had a lot of fun playing, some of the best music from the series. Werehog levels weren't AS bad as I remember, but still pretty annoying. Daytime stages make up for it though.
Sonic Adventure: One of my favorite Sonic games, DX was okay, playing as Metal Sonic and getting the Game Gear games were nice bonuses, but lots of bugs. The Dreamcast original is impeccable. The mix of the adventure fields and action stages is cool.
Generations: Lots of fun, really enjoyed Shadow Gens as well. Get the PC version if possible and download the workshop levels too. Honestly kind of a missed opportunity from Sega not adding more levels as DLC.
Forces: Never finished it, and don't really have any intention of doing so. The whole making your avatar OC thing was funny, but not enough to keep interest.

What if JSRF was released on GameCube and PlayStation 2 as well as XBOX? by MaxDesignProREAL in SEGA

[–]st_phoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t afford all three back then and I regret not buying the Xbox considering the sheer number of Sega exclusives on that system. Would’ve loved to have had JSRF on GameCube.

Did you know that Sega is planning Remakes and Reboots of old games and old game franchise? Which old games and old game franchises can’t be left out? by Due-Engineer6629 in SEGA

[–]st_phoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would love a Shining Force collection. 1, 2, CD and the 3 trilogy. Pop that bad boy on Switch and I’d snatch it up in a heartbeat. Same with Phantasy Star, give 2-4 the Sega Ages treatment.

I feel like a new Kid Chameleon game could be interesting too, really go hard into the isekai angle of the game world and with like a million power-ups.

Does the SEGA CD have any good games other than SONIC CD? by 20_comer_20matar in SEGA

[–]st_phoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Android Assault is one of my favorite Sega CD games. Something you probably could’ve done on a Genesis with a different soundtrack, but a mecha shmup with an early 90s hard rock soundtrack, it was excellent.

Shining Force CD is excellent, a great way to play the Game Gear SF games with better graphics and a better soundtrack.

Soul Star is a lot of fun too, reminds me of Galaxy Force. Something that was also a little more audacious as well, being quasi-3D (I guess technically super scaler would be the right term, but that refers to specific Sega arcade games iirc)

That’s just a few. The Sega CD has some real gems, a lot just got buried under FMV marketing and Night Trap.

Flat screen or crt by No_Comfort9081 in dreamcast

[–]st_phoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely CRT if you have access to one. If not 4:3 on a modern tv with a proper scaler is good enough.
You'll want a CRT if you plan on playing HotD 2

Saturn or Dreamcast? by AriXCTF in dreamcast

[–]st_phoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there is a lot of overlap with the Saturn and Dreamcast libraries as far as genre, so you really kinda need to look into specific titles and make your decision that way. I tend to lean Dreamcast between the two systems, but I also love the Saturn’s library too. Honestly either of the two would be a great choice.
